Diantha (The Widows of Wildcat Ridge Book 14) Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 172 ratings

The daughter of a Georgia plantation owner, Diantha Ames was raised and educated to be a lady. Surviving the Civil War as a child, her family, in a desperate, but ultimately unsuccessful bid to save the property of both her father and her uncle, arranges a marriage between her and her first cousin. Although not a love match, she and Eugene were amiable. However, as information about her husband comes to light after his death in the Gold King Mine disaster that took so many lives in Wildcat Ridge, she is left with her husband’s hotel and postmaster position to fill—and a lot of questions.

With Diantha’s former laundress gone, she hires Hilaina Dowd, whose family hails from the mountains of Appalachia, for the job. The young woman who loyally stays with her mother who wishes to live out her life in Wildcat Ridge and be buried next to her husband killed in the mine disaster turns out to be both a friend and a defender.

Henry “Hank” Cauley is branded a failure after refusing to be part of his father’s Salt Lake City brick-making business and then losing his stationary and book store business. While working as a common laborer in the family business to pay off his debts and save towards the future, his brother and conniving sister-on-law use their political influence with the territorial congressional representative to bury him away far from Salt Lake City by having him awarded the postmaster position in Wildcat Ridge. Only, when he arrives in town to take over the position starting the first of September, he discovers the postmistress, Diantha, knows nothing about the change. She is not relieved she no longer is obligated to fill this position. Finding himself surrounded by those loyal to the soft-spoken, Southern lady, is he destined to also be a failure in Wildcat Ridge?

Buckley “Buck” Kramer, wrangler on the Grassy Fork Ranch in Colorado, has not been totally satisfied with his lot ever since the trip he took to Wildcat Ridge earlier in the summer with his boss and best friend on the ranch. Now he sees the happiness of family life the two men enjoy after they brought back wives. When two trail-worn young brothers stumble onto the ranch looking for a meal and permanent jobs, but are told with winter coming on there is only room for one, Buck insists on leaving in order to keep the brothers together. Is Buck really dissatisfied with his job on the ranch, or is this an excuse to return to Wildcat Ridge and the woman he has not been able to get out of his mind?

Diantha, Book 14, is a stand-alone novel. However, you might enjoy it best by reading all the books in the series, The Widows of Wildcat Ridge. Also, my other book in the series, Nissa, Book 3, was written to be a duet with Diantha—a series within a series. You might also enjoy reading Nissa if you have not already done so.

This book actually covered two stories of the Widows of Wildcat Ridge series. Diantha had lost her husband, along with most of the Wildcat Ridge women. Diantha's story takes place at the hotel that she and her departed husband owned and Haliana was a girl she hired to help with laundry. Hiliana lost her pa in the same mining accident and this is her and Buck's story also. Another great read in this series. Excited to read the next book in this series. I really enjoy reading books written by Zina Abbott, and this one is another example of her great writing skills.

Together they make a wonderful tale.

Diantha has taken over the 📪 postmasters position
since her husband's death. She receives a small
    amount monthly for doing it.

All of a sudden out of the blue man comes to town
and claimed he is the new 📪 postmaster! What a
    shock for Diantha.

One thing leads to another and feelings begin to
grow between Hank and Diantha, but they are both
    afraid 😨 to admit it.

You must get this book and find out everything that
they and their friends go through. Find out what
Hank's father wants from him. I couldn't out the
book down! I loved this series!

I highly recommend this book to everyone!

The stories in The Widows of Wilcate Ridge just pull at my heart. Zina Abbott has the gift of making you feel the emotions of the characters and I did almost from the start for Diantha. She is now widowed and left with a hotel to run and a postnaster position. But was is worse is find out things about her deceased husband that she'd rather not have know!
There are several stories going on in this one and the added characters and interactions that really enrich the book. Hank Cauley has had his own misfortune. He really does not want to work in his father's brick making business and his brother and sister in law (grrr) basically force him out so they can have more money. They push him to Wildcat Ridge to the office of the postmaster and comes to take over the position. This had been Diantha's husbands job and she is surprised when he shows up. Can he not be wanted and succeed at anything?
Throw in Buck Karmer who had visited the town and could only think of going back and also seeing one woman he had on his mind.
Can everything work out and can they all find happiness? Prepare to take a trip to the west and not be able to put this book down once you turn the first page. This author is becoming one of my favorite and I cannot wait to read more!!

Dianha, being a widow to run a hotel and the being a postmistress. The torment she went through with a Mortimer Crane that thought he owned the town and discriminated against women after the miner men died in the mine. Next thing you know you have a slang with you words as your are reading! ZIna takes us to a time in Salt Lake City and Colarado that visualization of what it was like. Worrying if these women were ever going to make it on their own. Keeps you reading just to know what is going to happen next with their struggles.Great Reading!

Abbott writes with wit and grit as she spins another tale of life in Wildcat Ridge. One man returns to the girl he can't forget and another takes a postmaster job and find a woman who is all he ever wanted. Mortimer Crane shows up more than once trying to bully his way around, but he is no match for Diantha and Hiliana. This sweet. clean romance is suitable for YA readers and up.
