Discernment by Lauren H. Salisbury is the fourth book in her Legacy Chronicles series. The series is a science fiction reimagining of the story of Moses from the Bible. In Discernment the central character, named Mahsan, has run away from his adopted people, an alien race called the Esaraelians. He ends up on another planet inhabited by a friendly people called the Teburans who are decidedly more rural and old fashioned than Mahsan is used to. After he rescues a young woman named Jiya from space pirates her family welcomes him into their home as a guest as a way of repaying him. Jiya has always had trouble fitting into the old fashioned life that she was raised in, always feeling like she is destined for more than the traditional roles for women. Mahsan is the sole human on the planet and he feels out of place and restless until a relationship begins to blossom between him and Jiya..
90% of this book takes place in a rural setting that looks, sounds, and smells like a Texas dude ranch, but the people of Teburan are highly advanced in their technology. They’ve got space cruisers and gadgets galore. The science fiction element is always in the background giving this story and the whole Legacy Chronicles series a unique style. However, readers should note Discernment is first and foremost a love story about two individuals from different worlds (literally) coming together. Anyone looking for a Star Wars swashbuckler with lots of fast-paced action and battles between good and evil forces will be sorely disappointed. That is not the focus of this book. I’ve read two of the earlier installments in this series, Courage and Strength, and both of those books are slightly more geared in that direction with a bit more action and intrigue. Discernment slows the story down to give us a well focused and delightful look at the two main stars of the series, Mahsan and Jiya. Discernment is about two oddballs who don’t fit into their respective worlds yet they find purpose when they come together. Lauren H. Salisbury does a masterful job of bringing her readers into the world of her characters. We laugh, cry, and love with them in this science fiction love story called Discernment.
I won’t give away the ending, but as someone who knows the biblical account of Moses, I can’t wait to see the next part of that story translated by Ms. Salisbury’s out-of-this-world imagination. Looking forward to reading more of the Legacy Chronicles.

Discernment is the third book in Lauren H. Salisbury's The Legacy Chronicles. This series is a science fiction reimagining of the life of Moses from the Bible.

Discernment specifically focuses on the period of Moses's story where he flees Egypt and goes to live with the Midianites. This is his wife's story; here renamed Jiya.

I really loved this new character. Jiya is a strong independent woman stuck living in a patriarchal society that doesn't value her as a person. Time and again, people try to put her in a box, and she continually thinks her way out of it. She is the perfect match to Mahsan (the Moses stand-in) as she can relate to his feelings of not belonging.

Discernment reads very much like a romance. Very clean, with very interesting sci-fi elements, and a Biblical twist, but still romance. For this reason, I feel like this book stands very well on its own.

As book three of a four book saga, I was afraid that it would suffer from middle book syndrome. Thankfully, it does not. You should of course start at the beginning with book one, Courage, but if you somehow found yourself starting here, with book three, rest assured, there is enough backstory that you won't be lost. The ending is also pretty nicely tied off, with a gentle slope rather than a sudden drop off a long cliff.

The aesthetic of this particular instalment is what I would call space western. Think Firefly where old ideas meet high tech. For the most part it takes place on a cattle ranch on the planet Terabu, there is quite a bit of mechanical tech as well as space craft, but for every microchip there are just as many low tech scenes.

An all around solid instalment in an interesting series and a great book in it's own right. I'm looking forward to this fourth book to see how Salisbury handles the ten plagues.

This story tells of what happened to Mahsan, the lost teenager we met in the previous novel. His journey in finding a family is both heartbreaking and heartwarming. The same applies to Jiya, a misfit woman who wants to honor her family and use her gifts at the same time. I loved getting to know them both more, especially Jiya, whose mechanical aptitude is not something I share, but my husband could relate to. I enjoyed the details of Jiya's character, like how she carries a multi-tool in her pocket, and how she just "knew" things. This shows the amazing character development that Lauren employs with each of her novels.
The plot of this novel isn't the action paced adventure some may expect with science fiction, but it moves swiftly, reading like most coming of age novels and romance books. Most of it is wrapped up at the 80% mark, but there are definitely bonuses that will keep you reading until the end. Plus, how Mahsan meets the "All-Seeing One" or God is definitely cool.
Overall, this book has me wanting to read the next to discover what happens to Mahsan and Jiya as they seek to free the slaves!

I just finished this book the other day. It's a new release and is inspired by Zipporah and Moses. It was a fun read. I'd read the other books, but I wasn't too engrossed in this book, and it took a while to get into it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautifully written and eloquent book

I love this book. The retelling of the story of Moses, it can be read on different levels. As a fascinating and gripping story of life and conflict in a different place and time, as an expression of Christian values, as part of a longer story of good overcoming evil. This is the third of four books, but can be read as a stand alone book. I am so looking forward to the next, and final installment of this engrossing story.
