The Word Is War (Doomsday War Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 367 ratings

The Terran Confederation is on the brink of civil war. Across the myriad colonies of humanity, rebel forces are rising, clamoring for freedom from the increasingly repressive government of Earth, launching raids on the Confederation Fleet as they prepare for the conflict to come. On the frontier, however, a darker force is emerging, an ancient threat long forgotten, returning to once more threaten eternal, endless tyranny, silent ships massing in the cold depths of space, ready to strike. All that stands between victory and defeat is the Scout Cruiser Xenophon, destined for the scrapyard but recalled to the flag and placed under the command of a renegade officer, Commander Jack Winter, and given a mission that will either save humanity…or seal its fate.

The Word is War was a good solid military sci-fi story that while it lacked depth in terms of the characters was, nevertheless, action-packed. The plot-line is standard stuff, but the author's skill in delivering the story is excellent and is reminiscent of classic style sci-fi. This is by no means a bad thing since I have days where I don't want to read anything too heavy. So if you're looking for something a little more light-weight to read on the commute to work or a holiday read, then this book is a good one to relax with. Have already started the next book in series :)

Good pacing, and good action compliments an exciting universe. There is not alot of time for character development and no romance whatsoever. The action is nonstop and fans of cyber security will be pleased

If you've read enough military science fiction, you've run across these cardboard cut-out characters . . . an overlooked Captain, an XO who has no previous experience in the position, a 'hacker,' loose cannon pilot, a Marine turned ship's officer, corrupt politicians, minions with controlled minds, and the hard-working, mistreated, second class citizens of the outer worlds. Pretty standard stuff. Having said that, the author spins a good yarn and the result is a familiar read with the comfort one may find from a well-worn sweater.

This was a reasonable read. I do prefer his other series though. This might build well through to a similar approach as the other.

All too often books end with a cliffhanger. Not this one. The book is complete. Good characters, decent story, ok battles and suitably resolved
