Down in the Dungeon Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

Five exciting stories set in the glory days of fantasy role-playing gaming when friends sat around the kitchen table late into the night rolling dice and sharing adventures. Relive the spirit of the past or even the present with tales of epic combat and base trickery, yarns that any adventurer would be proud to spin out over a mug of ale at the local tavern, including:

Orcs of Grimwood summoning an ancient evil...

A mountaineering expedition to retrieve a griffin's egg going horribly awry--at least for most of the climbers...

A soldier beginning to believe his commander is not exactly what he seems...

A dungeon door posing an all-but-insurmountable problem for an experienced party of adventurers...

A unique trap appearing to be inescapable save for one desperate strategy...

As a bonus, the thrilling short story "The Trap", co-written by special guest author Tony Rudzki, is among the collected tales.

A.J. Walker is an archaeologist who likes to get to the bottom of things. A.J.’s training teaches that under an innocuous field may lie a vanished village, while turning over a simple stone may reveal ancient writing. Finding the hidden under the surface is what archaeology is all about.

That’s what writing is all about too. What makes people do what they do, and feel what they feel? It’s often hard to find that out in the real world, but building a character from the bottom up makes for a satisfying pastime because it takes the writer from cause to effect. Like all writers, A.J. has been an avid reader since childhood. When not writing, A.J. likes to explore the natural world through long-distance hiking and caving. A.J. has yet to come across any monsters while exploring the underworld, however.

You can learn more about A.J. Walker’s other books, and lots about the Middle Ages, at http://genreauthor.blogspot.com.

Book was better than I thought it would be.
I liked the world and the cast of characters.
I really liked all the man things. And I hope the writer comes up with more stories, set in the world he crafted. I’d get it.
It had a classic dungeon crawl feel to it. If that makes sense?

Although this anthology isn't as straight-from-the-gaming-table as I'd first imagined it would be, that's actually a good thing. These are stories inspired by gaming, but not direct copies of gaming sessions, as so many stories of this type often appear to be. The author has done a great job of giving me that nostalgic feeling while at the same time, nothing that strikes me as "only there because D&D mechanics require it". If you're an old-time gamer like myself, give this a try.

A 50 page collection of short stories by someone who has fond memories of late nights with friends, rolling the dice and using our imaginations. Hey, it worked for Dragon Lance.
He reveals a wicked sense of humor while telling stories of battles between good and evil, adventure, skull duggery and daring do.
Like with real life, good does not always win, but likewise, sometimes evil does good. Wither to prevent a greater evil (or quite by accident).
