Misfits, Gemstones, and Other Shattered Magic (Dowser Book 8) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 849 ratings

Two more elves were at large in Vancouver, but thankfully they’d been keeping a low profile while I faced the most daunting task of my twenty-seven years — planning and executing my wedding. I was dealing with a disgruntled grandmother with an extensive guest wish list of the magically inclined, all of whom didn’t particularly like each other. Plus a fiance whose concept of time was altered whenever he stepped into a dimensional pocket, and a best friend who’d spent months planning what was certain to be an insane bachelorette party. How was I supposed to find time to worry about possible invasions, or the motley crew of magical misfits who had unrepentantly upended my peaceful existence? Not that I was complaining. Who didn’t love wielding deadly weapons, opening a bakery, and marrying their soul mate in the same week? Or was that just my sort of thing?

Misfits, Gemstones, and Other ShatteredMagicis the eighth book in the Dowser series, which is set in the same universe as the Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to read all the series, in order to avoid spoilers the ideal reading order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1).

I did NOT see this coming! But...I trust the author to take me where she needs me to go. Each book in this series is nothing short of amazing. This book is no exception. What a gift it is to be transported to a place where the characters become so real as to be (literally) painful. On to the next book with grateful thanks.

First of all, I should warn you that you will crave chocolate and cupcakes while reading this book. Make sure you check out the reading order, and start with the first book. You won’t be sorry.

This book takes us on a journey and leaves us in a different place than the other books. We see the misfits pull together. The ending was surprising, and I wanted more. Reading the entire series really has me vested in all the characters, and I can feel the power Jade has rolling off the pages. You can almost smell the magic. Dig in and enjoy.

Man, Jade can't even get a break for the wedding! While we don't hit full wedding in this book, we are clearly building up to it and... things just can't go right.

Remember the elves? Well, this is apparently going to be a thing that lasts multiple books. While we are getting hints and teasers, it all comes to a head in a sort-of-kind-of cliffhanger ending here. Besides that? There's the usual (for Jade) drama leading up to a wedding being planned by major magical players, lots of guardian nonsense, werewolf pack stuff (ugh, remember Desmond?), and sexy times. Roll all of that together, with her growing band of misfits, and you've got this book.

While we learn a lot along the way, we don't actually get the big wrap up here. We are clearly building to what may or may not be a really really bad battle, but things are still moving in to place. Can I just say that I am loving Mory more and more each time we see her? This book is no exception. She's going to be big stuff later on, I'm sure. Also, Kett in these books is so different from Kett in the reconstructionist storyline. I'm still trying to reconcile to two, but I think we are getting to a place where they might become one person at some point. All in all, this pushed things along, but still made me what to throw my kindle across the room at the end. Diving right into book #8.5!

This is the only book in the wonderful series that ends in a cliffhanger. Jade is supposed to get married. She has her bridal shower and her bachelorette party gets interrupted.

You have to buy this series. On to read the next one

Once again Jade and Candy find themselves involved in a magical mess Thankfully Warrener and Kett are there to help out.
This book is wonderfully written and leaves you wanting more! It's so had to put down and not
read all the way through. Meghan is a fantastic writer planning on her story line really well!!!!!

I've eagerly read all the novels in this series and this was no exception. Yet like the other reviewers, I was disappointed by the cliffhanger ending that requires you buy the next installment to discover the resolution. As a result, the book felt incomplete and more like a serial installment. On the other hand, the plot features all the characters we've grown to love in books 1-7 and some formidable antagonists that give even the Dragons a run for their money.

Reading some of the reviews I have to wonder...if these people are so "disgusted" by so-called cliff-hanger and pricing...why do they continue to read? It's their choice. As for my take on this author and series...I love them! Never have I paid the asking price for a full set of books from an author. The books are a fun escape to another world...so to speak. Incorporating the every day Bakery into the story line also keeps things fresh. The writing is fun and engaging making the entire read enjoyable.

Overall, I liked book 8. I enjoyed the character interactions the most and the fun tone of the book (some of the unexpected appearances were pretty funny). Meghan is a wonderful story teller; and I appreciated the direction she's taking Jade in this book.

However, there were a couple things I wasn't crazy about. The first is the cliffhanger, like other reviewers have mentioned. We all want that resolution that comes at the end of a story; so it's a bit frustrating having to wait. I'll definitely keep reading though.

The other thing that bothered me ***MINOR SPOILER ALERT*** was how these characters are supposed to be so strong and powerful, yet they're so easily defeated. It felt like there were repeated descriptions of everyone's powers and abilities throughout the story, but it only took a couple pages to nullify all that. Like what's the point of all that power if you can't effectively defend yourself and those you love? Also, I know it's necessary for the plot for the characters to split up at various points in this story (and past stories), but it seems silly to all go separate ways when there's obviously strength in numbers.

But, like I stated above. I really enjoy Meghan's work; and I can see the effort and thought that went into this story (and all of her stories). So I'll patiently wait for book 9; and hopefully, get that (mostly) happy ending I was hoping for.

I absolutely loved this book! To be honest, I loved the whole Dowser series and have now collected the set in soft cover and also have bought them on my e-reader. They are worth every penny! Thank you so much Meghan for creating this universe for us readers! Jade, Emma and Dusk are my favourite characters in your series and each time I pick up one of your books to read it is like visiting old friends to see what they are up to now. In the case of the Dowser series each book is full of fun, a great story line, fantastic characters, great shoes, cupcakes and chocolate! Thank you also for including teasers in your books! It is great to get a hint of what will happen next. To all you readers out there; I highly recommend buying this book! Actually, I recommend all of Meghan’s books! I have read them all and loved them!
