Gemstones, Elves, and Other Insidious Magic (Dowser Book 9) Kindle Edition

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 1,263 ratings

I’d been compromised, then turned against those I loved. But no one controlled me. No one took anything I didn’t willingly offer. Not for long, anyway. If the elves wanted a war, I’d bring it. The instruments of assassination would come out to play. The dragon slayer would wreak bloody, sticky vengeance. And then I was getting freaking married — no elves invited. Even a baker of cupcakes and a maker of trinkets occasionally had to set aside the chocolate, the spice, and everything nice to save her friends. And her city.

Gemstones, Elves, and Other Insidious Magic is the ninth book in the Dowser Series, which is set in the same universe as the Oracle, Reconstructionist, Amplifier, Archivist, and Misfits of the Adept Universe series. While it is not necessary to read all the series, in order to avoid spoilers the ideal reading order of the Adept Universe begins with Cupcakes, Trinkets, and Other Deadly Magic (Dowser 1).

I love everything Meghan writes. The characters are well developed and interesting. I have been waiting for this book! I enjoy all the many different threads she ties together, including cupcakes (and recipes)! She has a great sense of humor, which is good when writing books about witches and elves and shape changers... I have read all the books I have found by Meghan, and have enjoyed them all. They are great when you need something light and mostly happy! The only difficulty I find with her writing is she can't write as fast as I can read! I look forward to her next book.

I first fell into the Adept universe when I got a link to a free copy of Cupcakes Trinkets and Other Deadly Magic through Book Gorilla. I thought it might be a quick fluffy read, and it sat on my kindle for a while before I got to it. I don't remember why I finally picked it out of the queue, but I have never been as thrilled to find an author and world. I eagerly await each new installment, and this is no exception. Doidge is a fantastic world builder. And, although I find Jade to personally be one of my least favorite characters in her world (Wisteria is my favorite!), there is entire cadre of nuanced characters and supporting staff, and each book has a fast-paced, well-developed plot to keep your interest. I have read all of the series more than once, and they hold my attention each time. I am sorry to see the end of this series, but I look forward to what new corner of the Adept Universe we get to explore next. Highly recommended.

I found this series completely by accident and ended up reading every book, one after the other. My other books sat sadly neglected as I consumed all three series - Dowser, Oracle and Reconstructionist. Be sure to go to Meghan's website for the correct reading order, as each series interweaves with the others.
Dowser Book 9 brings the tension and fun I've come to love with this series and ties up the story lines in a pretty, if blood-spattered, bow. My only nitpick with this book - needed more cupcakes! I suppose even a bad-ass baking warrior needs a break from creating new recipes after she's been abducted and enslaved, so I'll let it slide.
If you're a fan of the Ilona Andrews' Kate Daniels series or Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson one, I suspect you will thoroughly enjoy all the adventures of Jade and her awesomely weird cast of friends. I'm sad this series is over, but I look forward to reading whatever Meghan comes up with next.

I got lucky to stumble upon the Dowser series, and I've loved all 9 books. Jade is a perfect heroine, as she loves her friends and will do anything, absolutely anything, including risking or even losing her life, for them. Jade has a thing for chocolate, and acquiring magic. Whenever she defeats someone, she takes their magic and absorbs it into her necklace and knife, which makes her pretty badass by the 9th book.

Book 9 is about retribution towards the elf who captured her and raped her mind. It's full of great planning by the Oracle, and battles against the elves with all of her misfit helpers. It's a delightful conclusion to a fantastic series.

I waited to read 8 and 8.5 until 9 came out as I knew I wouldn't want to wait months before this heart pounding finale to the third trilogy of the Dowser series. As always, the characters are compelling in so many ways while the action gets your blood pumping. I particularly enjoyed watching Jade's growth and how all the characters worked together. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. I especially appreciate the moments of humor that provide a welcome respite from the action. I just wish actual cupcakes came with the book (yes, I know the recipes are available, but who has time to bake with all that excitement happening).

I put off reading this book because it is the last book in the Dowser series and I just couldn't bring myself to read it. I'm so happy and sad to have finished it! MCD is an excellent writer and does such an excellent job of bringing her stories to life. You find yourself wrapped up in the story, following every moment of her vision so intensely. I loved everything about this book. I especially enjoyed how all of the different types of supernaturals has to pull together to try and defeat the elves whether they liked it or not. This book has it all. Every moment that you could possibly hope for and many you didn't even know that you needed. As the end of a series it was perfect.

Jade and company come to the ultimate ending….maybe. This is a fabulous series. The books are a must have for an urban fantasy fan. Love Ms. Doidge’s stories. I will buy anything written by her. I really do need to make some cupcakes! Lol

Another great book by Meghan! If you haven’t read any of her work then you are missing out. The only negative thing I can say about this book is that it’s the last in the series. I can’t wait to see what her next novel has in store for us.

    Absolutely incredible.
I stumbled across this series of books purely by chance about a year ago. I read the first, and was instantly hooked. I have since read every book by Meghan, and they never ever fail to deliver. This book is probably, by far, her best so far (only JUST beating the Wisteria books). There's hilarity, love, suspense and tears involved if you read this though. I'm an avid book lover, who reads upwards of 15 books a week. This series of books is one that I go back to, time and time again, and enjoy it just as much each time. This book, along with any of Meghan's other books, will NOT disappoint! Thank you for such brilliant, heart warming, hilarious books.

The characters are singularly unique, each with their own magic skill to offer when things get bad, which they often do in this series. And to bind them all together is Jade Godfrey, granddaughter of Pearl, daughter of Scarlett, half witch, half...well you'll have to find out. I can't really introduce her properly because that would be giving secrets away.
She can taste magic, owns a bakery where she makes cupcakes and chocolate is her drug. Be warned though, I have gained a kilo in weight since starting this series, yep my cupboards now contain chocolates and cupcakes. Don't believe me? I dare you to read this series without eating either. But don't be fooled, this series is more than chocolate, buttercreams and icing, it has you on the edge of your seat with horror, suspense and devastating stories.
I would definitely recommend it...and a gym class or two.

Who needs to do laundry or dishes. Thank goodness there were leftovers in the fridge. I find Jade and company's adventures too riveting to put down. I am sad because I finished the book and have to wait for the next one. Five stars for a wonderful Canadian author.
