The Dragon King's Assassin: An MM Fantasy Romance (The Dragons of Serai Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 932 ratings

My life changed the day I tried to take his.

Mhavenna is a glorious city but, like every city on the face of Serai, it's run by Dragons. As a human, I'm on the lowest rung of the racial ladder here, as far from an illustrious Dragon as I could be, and I've made me peace with that. I don't like Dragons much, but like or dislike has nothing to do with my work. So when my broker offered me the task of killing the Dragon King, I took it. It was the sort of kill that could make an assassin's career, and I was certain that I had the skills for it.

I was wrong, nearly dead wrong.

The King caught me before I could finish the job, but instead of killing me, he made me his. I'm now the Dragon King's assassin. A warning and a weapon. A way for him to bypass his own laws without personally breaking them. But that's not all. He's tasked me with guarding him against future attacks. Who better to stop an assassin than another assassin? And who better to find the one who hired us? If only the King didn't have a body that made me salivate, a face that made my knees weak, and a pair of teal eyes that made me whimper. If only he didn't stare at me with those stunning eyes as if I could be more than property to him. Maybe then I could do my job, find the person who wants him dead, and save my own life. But I don't believe in miracles.

You are now

An Assassin Caught

He chuckled and it had a wicked sound to it. “Just a job? All right, Locrian Mahvis, I will give you a chance to earn your life back. You are now my assassin.” He stepped closer, close enough for his breath to brush my face. “You will obey my commands unfailingly. If I tell you to kill, you kill. Without hesitation. And you will protect my life as if it were your own. Better even than that. If needed, you die for me. Understood?” “Yes, Sire.” “If you try to kill me again, I will eviscerate you and eat your f#cking heart.”

My life began

Taming the Dragon

“Well, f#ck,” I whispered as I slid back into his arms. “Now, you've got me good.” I lifted my face to the King's, and he met me halfway, covering my mouth in a tender kiss that had me clutching at his shoulders and grinding myself against him. His hands slid up and down my back carefully, as if seeking an answer. I replied by drawing back, out of the kiss, and taking his hand to lead him back to the royal dais. “What are you doing?” Taroc asked as I positioned him in front of his throne. “Showing you how much I want to stay.” I undid his pants and pushed them down.

It was you

A Dragon King Tamed

“My entire life, I've had this knot in my chest. An ache that compelled me into action, an anxiety that drove me to the throne. I kept grasping for more and more but nothing eased that knot.” He turned to look at me. “Until tonight. When my dread roared for you, that knot unwound, and I knew that it was you who my soul has been reaching for. All this time, I've felt incomplete. Eager for something I didn't have. But it wasn't a thing or a goal; it was you. I needed you.”

In a voice full of claws, teeth, and c@ck, he said, “I smell you.”

I froze. “I'm sorry, Your Majesty. I didn't realize I was overdue for a bath. I will—”

“I smell your cvm,” he cut me off. “You pleasured yourself out there. You touched yourself while you listened to me have s3x.”

Fvcking Dragons and their fvcking super senses!

I cleared my throat and faced him as blood rushed to my face. “I did. You know I'm attracted to you—that was clear from the first night—and I've had to listen to you fvck for two weeks now. I'm sorry, but I needed that. If you have a problem with it, let me go into another room while you fvck your annoying, idiot lovers so I don't have to listen to them blather nonsense about royal cvm while you grunt through your org@sm.”

“Grunt, do I?”

Oh, I was on a roll. My reason and sense of self-preservation seemed to have spurted out of me with my cvm, allowing my mouth to spew all the frustration I'd been feeling. “Yes, grunt. Did you even enjoy that? For fvck's sake, it sounds as if you follow a list. One, get d*ck sucked; two, put them on all-fours; three, stick d*ck in them; four, wait for them to come; five, org@sm. Done.”

The Dragon King, one knee bent and the other leg straight before him as he sprawled against his headboard, lifted a dark brow. “You think I have a formula for fvcking?”

“Your whole life is scheduled, even the s3x, so yeah, I think you fvck by formula.”

“And you think you can do better?”

I paused, my brain finally catching up to my mouth. What the fvck was I doing? And what was he really asking? Oh, fvck it.

“Better than those morons you mindlessly scr3w? Yeah, I know I can.”

“Take off your clothes.”

“What?” my voice broke.

“Take off your clothes, Lock,” he said more slowly. “I want to see what you have to offer before I accept.”

Accept? Had I offered something? Was he really talking about . . .? I started throwing off my clothes as if they were on fire.

The Dragon King chuckled softly as he watched me. The sound went straight to my d*ck so that when I dropped my pants, it was saluting its monarch. His gaze went slowly down from my face, over my chest, and lingered on my c@ck. He licked his lips, briefly looked over the rest of me, then tossed back the covers to reveal his erect*on. Let's just say it was far more impressive than mine.

“Well?” the Dragon King prompted.

Holy sh*t, this is happening.

This was an amazing story. It was full of mystery and a rich world that very much came alive on the page by the author.
The main characters were complex, but also showed a vulnerability that occurred not just in words, but in how the author wrote the character development . I will be reading my name more stories by Amy Sumida. Also the spice was 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️!

I only give 5 stars to books I absolutely love. I gave this book 4 stars. The MC was intriguing and the relationship with the other MC was compelling. There were some areas where the plot was a little predictable but this was still a good read. After DNF’ing 5 books in the last week I’m happy to say this was good enough that I wanted to finish it.

I give this book 5-stars. I haven't read Amy Sumida before, but I just started her "Igniting Ember." "The Dragon King's Assassin" is a good read. Moves. The ending is wrapped up rather vapidly, as well as rapidly, but it fits. The story is part mystery, part thriller. Sumida's literary quality is in her wit. Splendid, although Lock can be irritatingly "flippant" at times. The sex is a rougher than I prefer, although the Dragon can be lovingly tender at times. All in all, it's a worthwhile and stimulating read. I will keep reading her books. She's prolific!

I'll be the first to say I'm not one for fantasy books (Lord of the Rings is the exception to the rule), but this book suckered me in, and I read it in 4 days. The mystery was cleanly crafted, the characters multidimensional, and the romance very well done. I'll probably check out the other books in this series too.

This was a unique read that I wasn't expecting. I absolutely loved Lock and Torac together. They made me laugh and were so freaking cute together! I think Amy Sumida did a great job balancing romance and intrigue in this book, even if it was a little predictable and slightly anticlimactic. I enjoyed so many aspects about this book, and the only thing that really would have made it that much better was just a little bit more on actual relationship development. A lot of my reviews say something similar, but this is the bread and butter of romance novels. I still loved this book, but I think it could have delved just a little bit better. I would definitely reread this though and I'm excited to read the rest of the books in the series!

Amy Sumida tends to have a couple of issues, with exposition and replacing plot with world building. None of those are on display with this particular book. Instead it’s a well written book that kept me enthralled as I read, with MC’s who are believable, engaging and have excellent chemistry with one another. I would absolutely recommend this to anybody who wants a lower angst fantasy with enough light heartedness and twists to it to make you engaged.

It’s a pretty quick, fun read. It definitely has some great things going on between plot and the recognition of needed character development, but it also reads very immaturely. There’s no great prose or beautifully constructed description passages. It has a solid plot, quick dialog, and fun humor that nearly doesn’t fit type of world the author created. It’s cute, but the written work isn’t enticing. It was hard to finish and found myself skimming a lot just to power through because the writing wasn’t strong enough. Again, good plot idea, decent world building, but a lack of finesse.

I started this book and did NOT put it down until I finished it. It was that good. I'm not going to regurgitate the story. I read it blind honestly, I think you should too. It popped up as a suggestion because I love fantasy male male romance. I took a glance at the synopsis and thought, sure why not? And omg. Did NOT disappoint. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful story. If there is more in this series I will read them all. I am officially HOOKED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marvelous mm fantasy romance
Reviewed in Canada on August 17, 2022
The world building behind this book is terrific and the imagination that has been written into it is spellbinding. There are two main story lines in this book. One is who is trying to kill the dragon king and why and the other is the romance behind said king and the human assassin who was sent to kill him. The two stories are woven together and the resulting tale is an absolute joy to read. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5* Enjoyable but lacked intensity and heat
Reviewed in India on December 29, 2022
First time reading Amy Sumida, will definitely be returning for more!
This is one of the better written fantasy MM out there.
Our MC is really fun and probably the only MC I haven't had the urge to smack up the head! He was resourceful, snarky, witty and reasonable.
I guess that's the word that sums up this entire book. This book is just so reasonable. There's absolutely no scope for angst. Whatever conflict comes up, it is resolved easily yet it doesn't feel like we're cruising through the book, its still the immersive experience at its nearly 7 hr reading time.
It has layers of intrigue, decent world building. Sort of adventurous but again it has no intensity.
The lack of intensity can be seen in the plot, in the relationship between the couple and even in our villain.
For me it was a nearly perfect read, lacking only in the heat of the drama and that magnetism I expect from a mating bonds and fantasy romance plot.
Go for it if you like a nice cozy outing with logical characters mixed in with some mystery thrills, sweet romance and no angst.
