Dragon's Fire (Beating Back the Darkness Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 120 ratings

Orcs, Dwarves, Minotaur, and a Soul-Devouring Dragon... What could possibly go wrong?

Aurion has been free from the corrupted taint of dragons for thousands of years—until now. The Deceiver has escaped his imprisonment, and a thousands years makes a dragon hungry...

Ogron and Theros, two orc brothers, just wanted peace between the clans. Now they find themselves on the front line of a war they cannot win.

As the villages of orc, elf, and man alike burn, the brothers find themselves with a singular choice. They must either forge alliances with races that have hated their kind for centuries, or face the dragon alone. In a world where orcs, elves, dwarves, and humans don't trust each other, the future is grim. It is a future of war.

Axes are sharpened, bows are strung, and cryptic prophecies are examined for the one thing that is all but lost—hope.

Readers are calling it a fantasy fusion of Lord of the Rings, Narnia, & World of Warcraft.

I am a firm believer that the Light shines brightest in the darkness. That's not only WHAT I write, but also WHY I write.

I love to explore humanity through fantasy because it allows us to take ordinary people (and orcs) through impossible situations and see what or who comes out the other side. It is often that through trials and tribulations that we get to see the most honest version of not only our characters, but ourselves. It is through this lens that we can discover truths. That is why I write dark, epic fantasy that dares to hope.

I am a Christian, husband, father of three young children, and a veteran. I have a BA in Communications. I was born and raised in Maine, and currently live in North Carolina. I love spending time in nature, and I especially enjoy hiking and swimming. When I'm not busy writing or chasing after my wife and kids, you can usually find me sneaking away for some quiet time with a good book. Some of the authors that inspire my writing are JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, Brandon Sanderson, and Steven Erikson.

I’m already reading the next book!!!
I couldn’t wait to read the next book before leaving a review. So in the interest of avoiding accidental spoilers I guess I’ll make that the selling point.

Some books are written for the mere enjoyment of writing a fun or beautiful tale for the writer and the reader.

Other books are born out of passion, belief and love.

Dragon’s Fire (Beating Back the Darkness book 1) belongs at the forefront of the 2nd category. From the very first chapter I could tell that Tiger Hebert was driven by passion in writing his tale. The story was a labor of love and belief.

Before reading this story I prepared myself for a world of darkness (I mean, it’s even in the title), but what I found was a story about hope, love, friendship and belief. I was extremely surprised by how beautiful the world and characters were written. My mind ached for them as the heroes fought to keep hope alive as the darkness and the Dragon, Slayvin, attempted to conquer the continent and their souls.

I really enjoyed this story. You do not understand how many times I said “Hans (who is my husband) you should listen to this book. You would really love it.” Probably more times than I could count.

The only thing that I wish was that there was more romance. The romance that he did write was written extremely well and I longed for more.

My favorite character was Seratu. His character was so well written and I don’t want to give too much away but the sections of the novel with him in it gave me happy feels. I wanted more of his character!

All in all, this was a very impressive novel that I really enjoyed. I could feel the passion of the writer radiate off the pages. And as a fan of epic fantasy I enjoyed the complexity of the story and characters.

The author has gone where few, if any have gone before – ORCS as Good Guys! He has done it so well, that I will forever have a new view of these creatures. Theros and a handful of others, even in the midst of their own army, stand as stout bulwarks of light and hope, in the darkest times. They struggle quite realistically in a complex and well thought out world. This touches on all the reasons I love Epic Fantasy! WARNING- you won't want to put it down!

This is a great start to a series, and was well told and engrossing. The author is very prolific at presenting battle scenes and combat, which makes the action very exciting. He has created a world in which I can foresee some great conflicts and action for the future as well. While it is your typical fantasy fare of dwarves and elves, and the like, I did enjoy the author's take on those fantasy elements. I will be looking forward to more from this author, and enjoyed reading Dragon's Fire.

The land is being plunged into darkness and all hope seems to be fading as all of the major races are attacked. Their capital cities sacked-- the orcs, dwarves, elves, and humans alike must make a daring journey to what they think is a safe haven. But when evil chases them and besieges their last stronghold, what hope do they have? That is when the unlikely happens-- the prophecies are fulfilled and hope is restored!

If you are looking for a pair of badass orc brothers, a red-haired warrior of immense skill, a kind dwarf, and a few other surprises, then look no further. This story is packed full of those fantasy races you’ve grown to love but with a slight twist; add in a mix of mythology, magic, and of course a powerful dragon. With stark similarities to Christianity, it is comparable to the masterful works of C.S. Lewis. If you like familiar fantasy speckled with surprises and built on a foundation of faith, then this is the book for you!

I highly recommend grabbing a copy and diving it, you will not regret it!

An epic story of death and destruction, Tolkien style. It follows a host of characters in different places making it a challenge to connect with any of them. Everything leads to a collision course for the sides of the conflict. However, this seems to be nothing more than a stepping stone in a much larger series. Best wishes to those of you who decide to read and continue.

This artfully written story pulls you in and doesn't surrender. Quickly paced with clever action scenes, you will find this a deeply satisfying read. I adore the characters and their loyalty and commitment to the Light as well as each other. Mr. Hebert is a gifted writer and this offering will give you an appreciation of that skill. I'm so happy to have come across his work! This book has it all. A nasty dragon, wise kings, courageous defenders, powerful women, a wee bit of romance and tons of action, battle scenes, strategy, treachery, heart-filling Icon, and God.

A very intense and adventurous book. When different clans like (Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, Humans) come together to fight the war against the deceiver (Slayvin) things get pretty intense. Good and evil plays out in the book but, then the savior (Aneri'On) appears, and the prophecy starts to take place. Loved ones were lost but friendships were gained. Really enjoyed the book and looking forward to the next. A real page turner and was hard to put down.

Once I figured out where the story was going, I couldn't put it down. There are a couple words that were wrong, like the instead of he. A suggestion to the author, when you change the topic completely, put a short note under the chapter title explaining that this is the elf story, or the orc story, or whatever. I found it really confusing to jump from one chapter to the next, but after the third time you did that, I figured what you were doing and it made it easier to read. After that I couldn't put it down. A great read, a wonderful story,
