Duke Al is raising money for Diabetes UK and JDRF UK. A percentage of the profits made from the sales of Bittersweet will be given to both charities.

Bittersweet is the debut collection of poetry, by spoken word poet and rap artist Duke Al. Bittersweet dives into the deep depths of what it is like to live with type 1 diabetes (T1D), providing an open and honest insight from personal experiences. The powerful poems are also an exploration into experiences of others that are living with the autoimmune condition. Bittersweet aims to make an invisible condition visible, as well as help other invisible conditions such as mental health, when living with T1D, be visible.

Bittersweet contains vivid and meaningful artwork, created by Dr. Sarah Ali, artist name Sarah Racanière. These pieces of original artwork allow for the poems to have an artist visual perspective. A combination of both the artwork and poetry make the reading experience that much sweeter!

The read is full of highs and inspirational topics like 100 years since the discovery of insulin, a will of motivation and optimism for the future. Bittersweet includes poems such as
Is Possible, If It Wasn’t for You, The Pump Is… and Futuristic. Bittersweet also features emotional topics such as mental health and T1D, burnout and storytelling poems, including Burnt Out, Luggage and Guessing Game. There are fun poems as well! For example, Scooby Snacks, Box of Chocolates, Sweet Teeth and What If.

Overall, Bittersweet is a unique insight into what it’s like for a person to live with T1D. It is far from sugar-coated and raises awareness of the effects T1D has on a person. Bittersweet is written with passion and filled with human emotion, making it a relatable, intriguing, and fascinating read.

Writing rhymes is my therapy. From a young age, I’d scribble raps and poems in my old lyric book. It was my way of expressing myself; an escapism to challenge my OCD. A passion of words, flow and rhyme flared. After being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 23, on January the 18th 2018, the pen was there to help me understand and articulate how I felt. Now I aim to make an impactful change using one rhyme at a time.

I read every single poem in your book and it has totally knocked the breath out of me. My 7 year old daughter has been diagnosed for almost 2 years and I could relate so much and was also amazing to get a small insight as to how she may feel sometimes and how she may feel in the future.
Thank you so much! I will read and re read and re read again forever💙

I am a parent of a young child who lives with type 1 diabetes and often struggle to articulate the hardship and pervasiveness of the condition to anyone who does not live with it or by extension alongside it. This book is full of wonderfully written poetry and prose about what it means to live with t1d, I laughed and cried whilst reading this and it is well worth a purchase supporting some great charities too.
