The distant Republic can barely help, but the honor of their leaders will not permit them to stand idly by. Ships and crews are set into motion to commence a desperate evacuation of their newfound friends, and debts with the strange Matrices are called in.
One branch of Matrices destroyed the planet. Another may well save it—but the AIs have their own agenda and the price they ask may be beyond the Republic and its new allies…

Starred Review of Exile by PUBLISHERS WEEKLY:
"A failed rebellion against a tyrannical space confederacy is exiled to a remote corner of the galaxy in this political space drama, the first full novel in Stewart’s Exile series (after the novella Ashen Stars). In the colonized cosmos of 2386, Isaac Gallant, the son of the dictatorial president of the interstellar Confederacy, is a high-ranking officer in the Confederacy fleet. He’s also secretly part of a rebellion against the Confederacy. Alongside rebellion leader Amelie Lestroud, a former movie star, Isaac helps to colonize a verdant planet... THIS FAST-PACED STARFARING ADVENTURE SUCCEEDS with a thrilling mix of space battles and tender emotions."
EXILE examines a [Star Wars-like] universe in which the rebellion fails before it gets started and the large body of rebels are exiled to a distant part of the universe to create their own civilization--or to die if they fail. A detailed and very intelligent exploration of the realities of society at a macro level.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2023I enjoyed the focus on the wider variations of species in the universe present in this book, and how varied they are. I enjoy stories of humanity uniting others to a common, worthy cause, and this book definitely covers a lot of my favorite parts of those tropes, with a fun helping of mystery mixed in as they work to uncover the many things they don't know.
I also loved how by this story the exiles have moved on with their lives with a focus on their future, and yet the trials of their past are still very much a guiding light for those futures, in a very positive way.
And yes. There are lots of space battles and marine battles in this book, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 26, 2019Four and a half stars. A nice second installment in the series. There are many options for Stewart to explore in further books. There were some twists and turns that really moved the story along. I also liked the added perspective of new characters.
It lost half a star for lack of development in the established characters and overly simplified aliens. It was still a fun read and a great addition to the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2019I did receive an advanced review copy of this book. And after reading the book, immediately preordered it. Would have paid more, too.
If you haven't read the first book in the series, and the prequel novella, it would be best to start there.
If you loved the first book, the saga gets even better. I love that Glynn always finds new ways to surprise me without compromising his character's integrity. One of my favorite things about all of Glynn's work is that his heroes and heroines are actually heroic. They aren't without flaw but they always try to be better.
I also love the references Glynn makes to popular scifi shows...without detracting from his writing. As a Trekkie myself, it is like the cherry on top.
**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**
We get to be introduced to new aliens, and they are an interesting and well thought out race. We also learn more about the aliens from the first book. I'm trying to be vague because I don't actually want to spoil anything, but I think it's important to note that Mr. Stewart's imagination still seems to be performing well. A new hero is brought to the forefront as well. Isaac can't be everywhere, after all, that's not realistic.
I particularly love AI stories so to see our new hero interact with the original aliens more is right up my alley.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2019I really liked reading the previous book in this series, Exile. I am quite happy to recommend that book, and I might perhaps be even more enthusiastic about recommending this book, Refuge! This story does not lack any of the interesting plots, dramatic twists, sci-fi action, political intrigues, far future weaponry, or anything else I've come to expect from Glynn Stewart's writing. In addition to that, he has built a story ark that I think I'd really be interested in living in. I have found myself repeatedly daydreaming about interstellar archaeological research I'd love to do in that universe, or perhaps the development of a first contact operation.
Anyway, I keep thinking about after I finished reading it.
I hope it captures your imagination as thoroughly as it has mine!
I received a free electronic copy of the book in exchange for my honest review ... then I pre-ordered this book as soon as preordering was available.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2021This was another great book. I love a good mystery. This one had plenty. All of the action, intrigue, along wth the hope and love. All for a very exciting book. Thank you. Off to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2020Congratulations to Glynn Stewart for another amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such interesting and exciting author who not only write intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2019I have been an avid fan of Stewart’s books for some time and have read just about everything he has produced. Like the rest, this is a good read and if you were a fan of exile and ashen stars this book will not disappoint. Realistically this rating should probably be closer to 4 than 3 but I struggled to get through it which resulted in an uncharacteristic low rating. Without giving too much away it just seemed as though there was too much logistical minutia to get through before the action started. Given the nature of the story I cannot see this easily avoided but it was a bit of a slog. Also as the author points out, certain names used in the story at, “quite a mouthful”. While likely necessary at first to build a race and establish some background the names probably added 25 pages to the story if you string them together. I would still buy and read the book as there are important events which will influence future outcomes but be prepared! Looking forward to the next one regardless.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2019Another great read by Glynn Stewart with great character development and all of the imaginative plot twists that characterize his writing. The Exilium exiles need allies and they are not alone. The Rogue Matrices are at it again, forcibly terraforming occupied planets. Can the ESF defend a new alien race? Can the aliens be trusted? Existing storylines are continued from Exile as well as key new storylines added to advance the story, with a nice little twist at the end. I can’t wait for the next book.
I received an ARC in exchange for my review. I enjoyed the book enough that I bought a copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Da ist vielleicht etwas los !
Dieses Buch ist meiner Ansicht nach das beste bis jetzt. Ich konnte es einfach nicht weglegen, der Schluss ist für mich ein wenig frustrant - als es am schönsten wurde, war Schluss. Glynn Stewart, jetzt schnell schreiben...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good second book, read it!
Refuge is the latest novel from Glynn Stewart and the second book in the Exile series. I like Glynn Stewart’s books and I think he does Sci-Fi well, his Starship Mage and Castle Federation series being favourites of mine. The story is exciting and, as always, the writing delivers a good balance between the pace and depth of the story which kept me turning the page, (in a kindle way anyway). I really enjoyed the book and would certainly recommend.
Note: I received a free electronic copy in exchange for an unbiased review (but liked it enough to buy a copy anyway)

5.0 out of 5 stars An improvement on book one
Book one I liked, but didn't love as much as other Glynn Stewart books, as the pacing was just too hurried, to cram what could have been three books into one. This is back to his best, and I'm glad the reader is rewarded with an entire book dealing with Vista.
