The Bulls of War: An Epic Fantasy Adventure (Chronicles of the Andervold Thrones Book I) Kindle Edition
An action-packed adventure of the highest order, The Bulls of War provides a sweeping tale of an empire on the precipice of war with its hated rival, their fragile truce teetering on the edge of a sword. Tens of thousands of troops stand at the ready, only an order away from battles on a scale unseen in centuries. Some factions within the Imperial capital fight to keep the peace, while others shirk no scheme, murder, or terror in their quest to trigger war - a war some fear could rend their empire apart.
It is in the midst of this dangerous game of brinksmanship that Generals Tyghus and Kyrus soon find themselves, pulled towards opposite sides of the growing rift. Against a backdrop of ruthless politics and the drumbeat of war, their friendship is put to the ultimate test as they struggle to save their country, themselves, and those they love - all while battling their own tragic pasts.
With Tolkien's scope and Martin's scheming, The Bulls of War is the first book of E.M. Thomas's epic fantasy series Chronicles of the Andervold Thrones, a saga reminiscent of ancient Rome and Greece in a world all its own.

Review
"Vast in its conception, saga-like in its imagining, the dramatic realization of the battle will pull readers into its dense, murderous clutches. The description of this book as genre fiction should be drowned out by the exquisite research and lyrical writing: battle becomes ballet, blood becomes a song, honor becomes its music. What Thomas has achieved in this book is both wonderfully surprising and incredibly enjoyable for anyone who wants to read good fiction whether they are a fan of this subject matter or not." Self-Publishing Review, 4½ Stars
"A red-blooded epic, The Bulls Of War delivers a rousing, large-scale adventure that marks the best of its genre. To read it is to turn the last page and feel as though you have returned battle weary from another time. An ambitious debut that's big on grandiose emotions like patriotism, treachery and love, Thomas ably manages to avoid the prescriptive travelogue style of far too many shield and sword epics through refreshingly uncompromising prose and a meticulous eye for detail. Mixing historical and melodramatic fantasy elements it's not a cursory read but it doesn't feel overly drawn out, with action and intrigue finding an equitable balance. A great read in any genre must go beyond its lead protagonists and this where Thomas really comes into his own. Tyghus and Kyrus come from hardened stock, but a host of powerful auxiliary characters creates a rich tapestry of players that are hard to forget and a measure of intrigue that proves wholly enthralling. A deeply layered and exhilarating read that ensnares the imagination, The Bulls Of War proves a remarkable debut and is recommended without reservation." - BookViral
"4/5 stars: The characters are ones that you want to know more about... and there is plenty going on throughout the plot to keep readers interested. With a whole bunch of action, a decent amount of romance, and plenty of other things as well, it's a book I would recommend... Overall, really good." - Readers' Favorite
Amazon Reader Accolades for The Bulls of War:"This epic novel is the stuff of dreams of past times and Thomas delivers it in a realistic, raw, grand manner."
"At times we get lost in the names and places - but try watching Game of Thrones: Thomas' tale makes more sense, is easier to follow, and has more inherent depth."
"The characters were deep and well written."
"He has created an entire world on the scale of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones."
"I can't wait to read the next installment of this gripping saga."
"Thomas has created a truly magnificent world."
From the Author
The Bulls of War's world of Andervold, for instance, is inspired by the Late Roman Empire and the extensive internal and external complexities in play at the time. It's fantasy, of course, but any student of Ancient Rome will immediately feel familiar with their surroundings once they've begun the journey into Andervold - the emperors, the politicians, the generals, the combat, the plots, the romance - it's all there. And just as it was in its real-life inspiration, there are a million tales and then some to tell in Andervold, and tell them I shall...
...The Bulls of War is tale one. I've got a bunch to go, don't I?
I'd love to hear from you about this novel, your thoughts in general, or whether your non-fiction interests likewise inform your fiction interests the way they do mine. Happy reading in any event!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2016Do not let the size of this novel intimidate you. Despite several hundred pages, it is easy to read and maybe even get lost in a story. I wasn't as hooked as I expected, but that doesn’t mean someone else won't be.
This is a huge, well-researched and epic historical novel. I think it is entirely fictional, but the names and overall feel of it is like of that in a historical novel, if you know what I mean. It is kind of a blend between fantasy and history. The plot is heavy on the action, there is some romance, a lot of characters and dialogues and for the most part it is an interesting and dynamic story. However, there are times when the plot just kind of stalls in one place for a bit longer than necessary, but it picks up again soon. It is hard to balance the pacing of a story as huge as this with so many characters so it is understandable.
I wasn't extremely drawn into any of the main characters. They are mostly well fleshed out, but none of them got to me in an emotional way as I expected.
Overall, I liked the novel, it is entertaining and the world created by the author has a lot of potential. A few minor hiccups in the pacing and not so amazing characters are my only complaints so it is safe to say that I recommend this book to a wide variety of readers.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2016East Coast author E.M. Thomas has traveled extensively gaining literary fodder for his imagination as well as his passion for fantasy, mythology and history. As he states, “It's hard to pinpoint just where and when my twin loves of history and world-building originated, but they surely coincided. Perhaps it was the childhood strolls across sweltering Civil War battlefields with my parents, perhaps it was the 1,700-page Harper Encyclopedia of Military History that I stumbled upon in my teenage years, reading it 'til the cover lay in tatters. Whenever it was and however it happened, I knew that I was hooked, an affinity strengthened upon traveling to the ruins of Rome and Greece, scaling the towers of Welsh castles, and hiking atop the Wall of Hadrian. I was (and remain) especially struck by the concept and scale of ancient empires, the ferocity of their combat, the startling efficiency of kings and emperors in a time when communication was, at its best, as fast as a series of horses could go or boots could march.’ To date he has written tow novels THE BULLS OF WAR and FORTRESS OF THE SUN.
Complete with maps and references that clarify his story and characters EM Thomas places his 500+ page novel before us – Book 1 of the Chronicles of Andervoid Thrones. His world of Andervold is inspired by the Late Roman Empire - the emperors, the politicians, the generals, the combat, the plots, the romance. Get to know this fantasy space because more tales will be coming in the near future.
The synopsis the author places on his website is excellent: ‘In the ancient land of Andervold, the Rokhish Empire maintains a fragile truce with hated Valogar. The tenuous state of affairs has split the Imperial Capital into hostile power-brokering factions: the Sudos fight to keep the peace, while the Nortics seek renewed battle at any cost. From the highest minister to the lowest merchant, everyone has to pick a side eventually. Kyrus and his lifelong friend Tyghus learn this lesson the hard way. Although they are veterans of battlefields a thousand miles south, the men are no match for the Capital’s ruthless statesmen, and they unwittingly find themselves on opposite sides of the factional divide. Tensions rise, loyalties fray, and hearts are broken, all as words of peace are increasingly drowned out by the drumbeats of war. As the men grasp at the remnants of their fleeting friendship, the Empire lurches toward a conflict that could tear it apart….an epic tale of love and war, honor and betrayal, life and death, set in an empire whose glory days seem long past.’
This epic novel is the stuff of dreams of past times and Thomas delivers it in a realistic, raw, grand manner. At times we get lost in the names and places – but try watching Game of Thrones: Thomas’ tale makes more sense, is easier to follow, and has more inherent depth – fantasy though it be. This is a genre for lovers of big tales. It will not disappoint. Grady Harp, August 16
- Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2016The Bulls of War is Book I of The Chronicles of the Andervold Thrones, a historical novel in e-book format by E. M. Thomas.
Plot: In a time of almost constant tribal/clan/territorial warfare, Kyrus, a young warrior on patrol with his father’s division survives an attack by Valogarians who kill his father and brother. As time passes he becomes the leader of the distinguished unit. His closest friend Tyghus rises through the ranks with him, and when Kyrus, unexpectedly and unwantedly is appointed Khorokh (Emperor) of the Unified Rokharians and Ten Provinces, he appoints Tyghus to take his place as the commanding general. Kyrus had been appointed by Rensyus, the dying Emperor, and accepted by the reigning council of Peers of the Realm. Rensyus had kept peace in the realm in spite of the exact split in voting by the Council with respect to war/peace. Tyghus’ sister, Tigra was to become the bride of the leader of the Valogars to further the peace that Rensyus was maintaining and he had believed Kyros could be persuaded to follow in his footsteps. Instead Kyros, separated from his close friend and convinced by rumors and innuendo by and from the war-inclined group that Tyghus no longer was a friend, becomes paranoid in the extreme. He sides with the hawks, declares war on the Valogarians, alienates other powerful members of the Peers and proceeds to become a devious tyrant. Tyghus and incidentally his sister are caught up in the viciously burgeoning set of inter-territorial circumstances. A host of other characters play parts at varying levels of importance in this tale as it gradually advances to provide a provoking base for the next episode in The Chronicles.
Discussion: The author has made an intriguing interpretation from existing records of a long-ago era to present a fascinating story of court intrigue, a paranoid ruler, and honorable individuals who become unfortunate pawns in a vicious game that leads to horrendous destruction and devastating loss of human life. Most regrettably, this magnificently researched presentation provides at least for this reader, a degree of disappointment. A map is provided, but a magnifying glass is required when attempting to find/revisit the territories and other features involved, and portions of the rhetoric although of historic importance, often slow, rather than advance the storyline. Also for some readers the plentiful supply of characters with historically correct but unusual names, possibly are enough to provide a pause in assimilation, thus further interfering with the story’s pace.
Conclusion: A minutely detailed fictional story recounting political maneuvering resulting in massive land/human destruction based upon research of a seldom examined pre-Christian era. Historically and fictionally engrossing presentations where, regrettably at least for this reader, either or both could be greatly enhanced with judicious editing.
A parenthetical and perhaps totally irrelevant but depressing comment is the notable reoccurrence today of the political maneuvering that existed then and no doubt even in earlier times. It is hoped that the destructive resultant activity so graphically and well described by this author remains only historical and/or fictional.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well written story about war
The Bulls of War: Chronicles of the Andervold Thrones Book I written by E.M. Thomas was a well written, descriptive account of a plot line filled with war. This novel is about an empire that is at war, the youngest son of a high class blood line is fighting against the enemy, along side his father and brother and their troop. The youngest survives while his father and brother are slain. As time goes on, he becomes the leader of a regiment and from there the story takes a very different turn. This novel is full of action, war, romance, friendship, and betrayal. The author has done a wonderful job in retaining the readers interest throughout the book. I found that this story was well written and thought provoking. There were a few twists in the story that I did not expect and I thoroughly enjoyed this story and look forward to reading the next book in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Empires Built and Destroyed By War
At its most basic, it may be said that The Bulls of War, Book 1 in the Chronicles of the Andervold Thrones by E.M. Thomas is a sweeping, grandiose tale of an empire on the precipice of war with its hated rival. However, that would hardly begin to describe this majestic, ambitious tale that gives its readers a voyeuristic pass to another time, somewhere between medival and barbaric, where nary a second thought is given to plunging one’s blood-splattered sword into the exposed neck of the enemy if it means protecting one’s empire. While this is also a story about Tyghus and Kyrus, two friends who have lived through much, Thomas’ story is also about deceit and revenge, power and politics and more importantly, The Bulls of War is about empires and the wars that build them and the wars that destroy them. The book was fairly long and although very well written by an author clearly influenced by his love of history, the story might have been better served with a thorough edit which would have tightened the story line somewhat in order to keep the reader fully engaged from first page to last.
