The alien champion was defeated.
Humanity was gifted a new star system.

Reinforcements are coming. The UNOPS
Stalwart Sentinel is Earth’s greatest battleship. Leading a powerful war fleet, the Sentinel will protect mankind’s expansion into the galaxy. Until then, the Victory must stand alone.

The wheelhunters will not rest until the last human in the system is dead. Rama Seti and the UNOP Marines must defeat them. Or mankind’s first steps toward a galactic empire will be our last.

The situation is set up on page 1. The wheelhunters are coming for the Victory from a terrifying battleship winging in from sunward and, on the surface, they are attacking the nascent colony. Human reinforcements will arrive too late. Can the Victory and the colony hold out until then? It’s a great set up. It feels like a momentous clock is ticking from the first moments.

The first book in the series was packed with action, but this one is on a new scale. In Orb Station Zero, it was mostly hand-to-hand training and hardcore tussling. In this book, Ram is thrown straight into the fighting, dazed as he is in his new body, using automatic battle rifles and a sword. The action scenes featuring marines in intense combat with aliens on the surface and in space are a substantial part of the story. Then we're launched into an extended raid and mission with both suspense and ferocious shoot-outs. The final assault is riveting and I had no idea how it was going to end.

There is also a new dimension in the form of shuttle pilot Kat, a new POV character. She is a drug-addicted enhanced human with hyper reactions that respond to her level of adrenaline. She was a brilliant character, every bit as rounded and likeable as Rama Seti himself. The AI character was very convincing and her relationship with the others was surprisingly touching.

The book is great at evoking themes of loss, death and also the poignancy of memory in humans (and AI) and how that shapes personality. It made me contemplate friendship. The story also has that bittersweet quality of so much of the best fiction, and all this in amongst the blood, gore and glory. As in the first book, the plot takes you in unexpected directions, just as Ram's experiences and the discovery of what's hidden from him unfolds.

Exploring the wheeler physiology and culture was a fascinating aspect that left me wanting to find out more in the next book. The author excels at the unexpected and at creating vivid, pacey, multi-layered stories. To call this an enjoyable read would be an understatement. Highly recommended.

the constant grammatical errors are very frustrating. This has also been noted by other reviewers. Read at your own risk.

The second book in a series of intergalactic one on one. Every generation the Best Fighter fight for the right to colonize new planets . The win only give you access to the planet, now you have to fight again. Our downtrodden heroes are lied too, have their memories changed and fight for friends and their civilization. A new ally is found and a more dangerous Enemy emerges to battle for our Solar System. Immensely enjoyable to read and imagine what the future could bring.
Thanks Dan Davis for a well written series that will Continue to hit new heights.

The planet Arcadia is ripe for colonisation, a volcanic water world with large island chains. The Orb Builders have gifted it to humanity who will make a colony there but for one problem – the aliens, the previous owners, will fight to keep it. I loved the science in this sequel, and how it sits behind the story without overwhelming the plot to make it feel like a real world, with realistic problems. The geology of the surface, the orbital mechanics and stuff. But the story is character driven too. Both main characters start out as cogs in the military machine but make choices that drive the plot, going against their orders. Or are they? The bad guys are the aliens but also enemies within the command structure and allies become enemies and vice versa. Also the dialogue was very funny. Couldn’t believe what happened at the end. This series mythology is shaping up very nicely.

I received an Advanced Review Copy (ARC) of this book in exchange for a fair and impartial review.

I loved this book! I was worried that after the climactic battle at the end of Orb Station Zero that it would be difficult to maintain that same level of excitement and action in the second book. I had nothing to worry about! What a thrill ride!

Rama Seti continues to evolve as both a warrior and a person. Dan's portrayal of a truly alien (and antagonistic) species was spot on and his deeper dive into the relationships and motivations among "The Spaz" squad really drew me in. After the first book, I was hooked. I immediately purchased the two prequel books (Onca's Duty and Inhuman contact) which were both fantastic and told a lot of "the back story". I can't wait for the next book in this series!

    A great sequel

I really loved the first book and this one was even better. More action, more guns, more combat. More Marines fighting and excellent action scenes from the start. The main characters were fully rounded, totally believable as people who make mistakes but are also heroic. The new POV character of Kat was very funny and the relationship with the AI was fantastic. Ram was also even funnier in this book than the last one and the dialogue with the Marines was great. The very end which hints at the next book in the series was pretty amazing and I already can’t wait for book 3, I wish I could read it right now.

After reading the excellent prequels I was looking forward to the next installment in the adventures of Rama Seti. This book does not disappoint, there are great new characters (I particularly liked Kat and her scenes as a death defying pilot) and epic battles in space. The body/mind tech modifications to the characters are some great and original ideas. Highly recommended.

Excellent continuation from Orb Station Zero. Full of action with some good and unforeseen plot twists. Looking forwards to the release of book 3 in this series.
