How to Be Kinky: A Beginner's Guide to BDSM Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 91 ratings

How to be Kinky is a primer on the multifaceted world of kink and getting into BDSM play. It is for beginners and novices, couples and singles. Here, Morpheous tackles topics that aren’t regularly addressed in other sex etiquette books. Most books on BDSM lean heavily towards clinical issues and tools/techniques. There are books on being “a top” or “a bottom”, but the wide spectrum of human dynamics in BDSM play is not covered.

This beginner’s guide addresses all aspects of enhancing your sex life with kinky play. Singles and couples who are new to the scene will appreciate material on the basics of BDSM play and role playing, how to turn your bedroom into a den of iniquity, discovering kinky uses for common household objects, proper protocols and etiquette at fetish events, the physiological and psychological aspects of pleasure and pain, and how to maintain physical and emotional safety during play.

This enhanced second edition is reworked in full color, with gorgeous and sexy photographs, as well as 15 easy to follow photo essays. Communication, fun, and safety are at the forefront of this top-selling beginner's guide, and once you’ve finished you’ll be wondering How to Be Kinkier!

I absolutely love this book,it explores not only the many different aspects of BDSM lifestyle,it also goes into terms and definitions to widen your understanding of them.I am somewhat experienced in this lifestyle, but there was alot i hadn't yet explored and this book introduced me to them.it helps you understand what you need to do to have and maintain the kind of kinky relationship you want, weather it be just sometimes to spice it up,or as more of a continuous role play, what i also like about this book is there are picture illustrations, and its fun to read, other books like this ive bought have been way to scientific for my boyfriend (whom im introducing to this lifestyle) to read, this book is much more fun,and easy to read, easing you into it,not throwing you in the middle of it. i recommend this book to anyone who is new to this and wants to explore it,or maybe to someone who has a partner they are looking to introduce to it,or even to somewhat experienced individuals who are just looking to understand more, its an all around awesome book! two thumbs up

This book is exactly what the title claims. It's definitely for newbies looking to add a little spice to the bedroom and or basement. The author recommends that readers "take your time to learn what gets you hot and bothered and rest assured that just because you like a little bit of 'tie me up with some slap and tickle' in the bedroom doesn't necessarily mean you will give up your day job and start wearing leather 24/7." The sex educator author of this tome, further "wants to encourage others to explore their sexuality in a safe way without fear of reprisal, guilt, or shame either with one partner, or several, or solo. Flirt with your urges and explore."
The author, Morpheous, who is also a Toronto-based fetish photographer/artist has illustrated this beginner's guide book with many of his own pictures. Those images are more relaxed than most fetish photography in that the models are all having a good time; smiling, giggling, smirking and enjoying their role playing. This is a big improvement over the usual images that are designed to illustrate and reinforce the erotic aspects of fantasies of pain, punishment, fear and suffering. This is also a more realist portrayal of the activities detailed in this volume. The writing style has a touch of Toronto to it and that's a good thing. One of the more unusual chapters is a step-by-step guide for the reader and his partner to safely visit a professional Dominatrix or "Domina" as well as exploring the non-professional scene. This is an excellent guide for those people who will quickly discover that they only want to add a little kink as a form of foreplay to their normal sexual relationships. There are so many kinds of kinky activities including theatrical role playing and a whole universe of desirable, very sexy fetish fashions to collect that people in long-term relationships will greatly enhance their traditional love life. Practicing a little fetish adds some spark to what may have become routine.
It provides lots of opportunities throughout the day for planning and dreaming up the next exciting fantasy session(s). It encourages new forms of creativity and communication. That kind of full-time anticipation makes the love making itself infinitely more satisfying. A little hidden bruise, hickey, scratch mark or extra tender nipple from an earlier love making session provides constant reminders of the previous night's bliss.

Probably the best book on kinky education out there today. Where other books promise a lot and deliver a little - this book has gorgeous step by step photographs in full color and tackles topics that other publications can't handle. I'm very happy with this book and its helped me and my partner spice up our bedroom life in ways we never thought possible before!

This book is a very useful primer for terminology and methods used within the BDSM community at large- a nice toe in to the door. You'll learn just enough to get an idea of a bit of the potential paths (the more common, less hardcore fetish/kink) that you could take, to set you exploring and figuring out where you would like to take it.

The down side is that it has a heavy bias towards extroversion: parties, clubs, socializing in the BDSM/fetish community, increasingly downplaying more introverted, private expressions of play as less desirable to party life, particularly as the book wore on towards the end. The result for me personally was intense stress, and being turned off and repelled from something that has great meaning to me... so if you're looking for something to broach the topic with a lover that is more introverted and less the social butterfly or exhibitionist, I do advise caution and much communication- try reading it together to buffer it, or you'll loose them at a fragile deciding moment.

I will definitely be reading his other books, but... it takes extreme effort to overcome that personality type barrier.

I enjoy Morpheous and his keen eye for the artistic display of BDSM and have learned a good bit from all his publications and would very much like to catch him in conference one day. A good book for those looking to learn about the lifestyle for personal knowledge or simply research aspects.

If you have been in the BDSM scene for some years, this book will not offer you much new insight, but it is well written with lots of experience and love to the subject, so it is well worth spending your time reading it. For the newbie it must be a gold mine. I would definitely recommend this as the first book in someones newly started kink library. The book is full of practical hints, of ideas and suggestions for future exploration and it is written with lots of humor -the section about how the author got caught by his mother cleaning his favorite toys made me laugh aloud. Definitely well invested money.

I didn't know I wanted to be tied up until this woman came along!

The book is great, I learned a lot. Lots of pics in colour, certainly seems better researched than most of the books on bdsm. They are fit to be shoved out on an ice flow in march

3.0 out of 5 stars Photos are a matter of taste

We are a couple married for almost 40 years and bought this book as a bedtime lecture. When taking a glance into the book, we found the text well suited for beginners with a lot of "down to earth" information and practical how-to tips. We found it very positive that the rather explicit and numerous photos show "normal people" and not the ubiquitous glossy photographs of flawless models lavishly worked over with Photoshop.
Most of the photos in this book show people almost covered with tattoos and with rather weird piercings. It is a matter of taste, some people may find this arousing, others not. Also many photos show lesbian and gay play, which some people may find exciting, some not (as for example we).
As a source of inspiration and excitement for players with some practical experience we find this book not so good

I bought this as myself and my wife already enjoy a little "lightweight" bondage and spanking. We were basically "playing at it" and we wanted to to learn if there was anything we could do to spice our our playtime up even more so we bought this book.
I`m about half way through the book and so far is well set out with plenty of illustrations, the majority are relevant to the text. The American author Morpheous certainly knows his stuff and is a good narrator. The book is written in an informative and humorous way but i thought that the humour was a little oddball in places. The narrative is very easy to read and does not assume the reader has any prior knowledge of BDSM world. The various kinks that make up BDSM are explained and there are "how to" photo tutorials, for example how to tie someone to a bed.
I read one or two negative reviews about this book prior to buying it. But these have come from people who are what i would term experienced practitioners of BDSM, who probably have there own "medieval torture chamber" at home.
I would recommend it to anyone who is curious.about BDSM or anyone wanting to take things further like ourselves.
