3.6 3.6 out of 5 stars 49 ratings

You are but seeds of fortune, strewn eastwards by an unlikely Mandarin, towards the South China Seas. May you flourish and germinate in your new earth.

In 1935 Vienna, the demi-monde enjoy the delights of the Grünberger patisserie.
Eva and boyfriend Michael love dancing in the illicit American jazz clubs but Nazi terror is rising.

Soon, the desperate situation for the Jewish civilians of Vienna forces Eva to try to leave, but where can she go?
Step forward an unlikely, real-life, Chinese hero, Ho Feng Shan, who miraculously helps Eva, her father and showgirl Marta to obtain visas for Shanghai.

But, as Marta plans to seduce Shanghai businessman Victor Sassoon, how is shy Eva coping in a unfamiliar world.
And what happened to brave Michael, left behind in Nazi-controlled Vienna?

The Mandarin Seeds is an epic historical saga spanning three continents, from the terror of pre-war Vienna to Shanghai and its electrifying conclusion in post-war San Francisco.

Both the storytelling and the writing are mediocre at best. The book also needs professional editing, with many errors, overwriting in some places that could easily be cut, and a lack of explanations that are needed to make the story come together.

Interesting book. I've learned a few things that I did not know. It's a well-rounded book. The horrors that the jews had to go through are unspeakable.

I will recommend this book to my friends.

This is an enjoyable light book to read which included so many historical facts
countries and events. Yet It is a wonderful story of everlasting love no matter the trials and difficulties.

A joy to read very pleasant and well written. I knew of the story but never how it unfolded. Sad it ended
