How did the masters of art imagine the rape of David’s daughter, Tamar, by her half-brother Amnon?

This collection depicts the assassination of Amnon at the hands of her brother, followed by Absalom’s revolt, trying to topple David from his throne.

These amazing sculptures, paintings, etchings, and manuscripts inspired the author to write The David Chronicles, an epic historical fiction trilogy with a modern twist. Besides being an artist and an architect, she taught art history and curated this collection to analyze the contrasts between various artistic viewpoints.

This collection is arranged not by artist, nor by artistic style or era, but rather moment-by-moment following the biblical story, as imagined by Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Chagall, Frederic Lord Leighton and Jan Steen, to name but a few.

★★★★★ "One of the most complete collections of art from ancient through renaissance to contemporary in drawings, paintings, sculptures, etchings."

How did the masters of art depict these subjects? The epic battle of David and Goliath: a moment by moment account. The victory celebration, Michal’s love, Saul’s jealousy, and David’s narrow escape from his assassins. The decline of the House of Saul, losing his last battle against the Philistines, and David’s rise to the throne. The most torrid love affair ever told: David’s forbidden love affair with Bathsheba, his attempt to cover it up, and the regrets that would haunt him for the rest of his life. Trouble in David’s house: Amnon attacks his half-sister Tamar, the assassination of Amnon at the hands of her brother, Absalom, and Absalom’s revolt against the king. Abishag brought in to serve as David’s last concubine, the rivalry between his sons, their revolts against him, and handing power to his chosen heir, Solomon, ensuring a lasting legacy.

Review

  • "One of the most complete collections of art from ancient through renaissance to contemporary in drawings, paintings, sculptures, etchings." - Grady Harp, Hall of Fame Reviewer
  • "Uvi Poznansy's Inspired By Art--The Edge Of Revolt melds visual mastery with appropriate snatches of biblical verse. The result: Her readers see the tales of David's offspring Amnon, Tamar, and Absolom in new and meaningful ways. Her sequencing follows the chronology of the biblical tales. Her selection of the masters' works allows readers to appreciate the artists' allegiance to their respective societies in telling the Jewish David's story. The resulting versatility, oils to engravings, engravings to water colors, water colors to colored etchings, and more, dazzle the senses. An added bonus: Readers come away with a new appreciation of how great artists exploit the materials and technologies available to them by their cultures." - Dan Strawn, Author
  • "From the rich bright colors of classical painting, through the pallor of engravings, the silk and foil-wrapped threads of old techniques, and even the mystical brush-strokes of modern art, Uvi Poznansky's trail through art's inspiration tells the story of King David's erring sons Amnon and Absolom with startling immediacy. It's a tale that starts with temptation and violation and ends with war's hard-wrought peace--the dark side of Biblical history perhaps." - Sheila Deeth, Top Amazon Reviewer, Vine Voice
  • "An amazing assemblage of art by the great masters. But this is much more than a collection of images. It is the story of rape and murder during the King David era. Varying points of view are carefully sewn together in a cohesive artistic narrative." - Richard Cezar, Author
  • "If you love gorgeous collections of art that together tell a story, you'll love this book." - PJ Fiala, Author
  • "I believe and highly recommend that you check out not only this book, but the entire series...as the visual stories speak to us of King David's life." -Glenda, Vine Voice
  • "This book features beautiful images by artists from France, Italy, Germany, Israel, the USA, Switzerland, and other countries. The variations in artistic style surprised and delighted me." -DJ Faz, Vine Voice
  • "Beautiful pictures that tell an awesome story. If you enjoy art, you don't want to miss this one!" - B.J. Robinson, Author
  • "A great collection of art! Many beautiful pieces found in here for a wide variety of styles!" - RJ Reviews

Uvi Poznansy's Inspired By Art—The Edge Of Revolt melds visual mastery with appropriate snatches of biblical verse. It's unfair to pick favorites, but I was so moved by some, I can't help commenting.

Poznansky's selection of Raffeallo Sanzio's David's Triumph, with it's gilt and prophetic grandeur, sets up the tragedy's to come. Huzzahs to Uvi for making it the first of the works to come.

Guercino's Amnon and Tamar oozes both sensuality and innocence. I cringed at his vivid prelude to rape, desolation, and rejection.

William Blake's David's Pardoning of Absalom, a masterful watercolour over black lead on paper, imbued me with a sense of the celestial, a fitting aura for an act of forgiveness.

David mourning Absolom: Chagall's sanguine dominance puts a proper emphasis on Absalom's treachery and demise.

The simplicity of Vallotton's David Ascending Mount of Olives underscores David's sorrowful state in ways that can't be matched by more lavish renditions.

Enough. You get my sense. Inspired By Art—The Edge of Revolt is a compelling rendition of this tragic piece of David's story.

    Well done, Uvi.

Growing up in a large city, I was often taken by my parents to one museum and art gallery after another, as a matter of course. I would stand in front of paintings, etchings, drawings, and sculpture and wonder at the fine creativity of the various artists presented.

But I’d also get tired and bored. Truth be told, I realized as an adult that as spontaneous as the atmosphere at a live exhibit can be, I much preferred studying art books at home, on my sofa, with a cup of tea at my side, a blanket over my legs. I could either take my time or flip through a page here or there, in great comfort.

Imagine my delight when I discovered Uvi Poznansky’s INSPIRED BY ART: THE EDGE OF REVOLT. This is a magnificent collection of artworks she used as inspiration for her well-received series, THE DAVID CHRONICLES. The depth and breadth of this collection is astounding. Color engravings, etchings, pencil drawings, calligraphy, mezzo tints, and oil paintings by the likes of Rembrandt, Chagall, Tissot, Michelangelo, and the modern American artist, Ivan Schwebel, just to name a few. For me, sitting on my couch and taking my time, these works simply leapt off the pages at me. I also greatly enjoyed the titles and quotes beneath many of the works, such as:
“For the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater
than the love wherewith he had loved her.”

All in all, if you’re in the mood for a fantastic way to spend hours on your couch or your favorite chair, relaxing, I highly recommend this book. It’s a true gem.

This is a beautiful collection of artwork done telling the Biblical story of Tamar being raped by her half brother and the aftermath of it. I found this very interesting, the only thing I felt that was missing was the Bible verses used to tell the story, the citings of them actually. I will definitely keep reading more from Miss Poznansky!

Uvi Poznansky dons another Technicolor coat in this latest series of books, always raising the bar for her high standard previous achievements. Originally from Israel where she studied Architecture and Town Planning then moving to the US where she studied Computer Science and became an expert in Software Engineering, Poznansky managed to combine the design elements of two studies into unique formats. And she has accomplished the same with the other side of her brain - making visual her ideas (she is an accomplished painter, drawer, and sculptor who has enjoyed exhibitions both in Israel and in California, her present base) and making words in poetry and in short stories and children's books.

Uvi has published an absorbing book series – The David Chronicles – and now is curating art collections to enhance the pleasure of her books’ stories. This volume, THE EDGE OF REVOLT, follows her previous installment FIGHTING GOLIATH and FALL OF A GIANT and is again one of the most complete collections of art from ancient through renaissance to contemporary in drawings, paintings, sculptures, etchings – works by Raffaello Sanzio, Guercino, Maerten van Heemskerck, Eustache Le Sueur, Heinrich Aldegrever, Matthaeus the Elder, Renieri, Jan Steen, Tissot, Schwebel, the Maciejowski Bible, William Blake, Rembrandt, Johann Jacob Haid, Kokoschka, Schwebel, Vallotron, von Carolsfeld, Albert Weisgerber, Michelangelo, Gustave Doré, Francesco Pesellli, Faith Robinson Trumbull, Chagall, Frederic Lord Leighton, and Camillo Boccaccino - some well known, others – discoveries. The art is arranged not by artist but instead by events regarding the lie of David - the rape of his daughter Tamar by her half-brother Amnon, the assassination of Amnon at the hands of Tamar’s brother Absolom, and Absolom’s revolt trying to topple David from his throne. It is a majestic, learned, beautifully designed book that carries a lot of instruction, entertainment, as well as visual pleasure. But then that is what Uvi is all about! Grady Harp, March 17
