Crawford seems to have written this book with the idea of turning traditional fantasy upside down in unusual but believable (in the fictional sense!) ways. It's an interesting exploration of a world which isn't quite what it seems, and characters who don't necessarily 'belong'. On it's surface, it's a fun and imaginative adventure. But just below that, there are some important questions asked through the lenses of its characters, such as, "what sort of sacrifice is worth making?" and "Am I morally responsible in a land which isn't entirely -real- to me?" This first book in the series serves as an introduction to the setting and major characters, and as odd as this may sound, I feel like the biggest appeal for this particular book is what it's setting up for. The book ends with each character primed to grow and be challenged in ways which reflect real issues (responsibility, familial concerns, fear of the unknown, moral subjectivity, living up to another's legacy). Now that the background has been presented, I'm excited to see what's in store during the rest of the series.

TL;DR: It's a fun fantasy adventure, and alludes to relevant issues if you dig just a bit. Sets the stage for the the characters to reach fascinating potentials in the following books.

When I first picked up the book I didn't really know what it was about so I didn't have a ton of expectations moving forward. But then I couldn't put it down. Crystal does a great job of giving enough information to hook you and then leave you hanging just long enough. So many great ideas for characters and interactions. So many plot twists that I wasn't expecting. You fall in love with the characters so easily. If you're a science fiction reader, this is a most excellent and easy read. If you're not, maybe this is one to try! Can't wait to read the next one!

Who am I? Who is Lex? I am Lex. What is Lex? Interesting twists and characters inhabit a world where things do the unimaginable and people aren’t what they seem. Then experience this world through the eyes of Lex, who can’t remember except in flashes of images which turn out to be memories and you get a feel for the roller coaster ride that is The Edge of Nothing. (Though this was in 3rd person POV, Lex’s perspective comes through loud and clear.)

Although confusing at times (well … what do you expect … Lex is confused), the story finally rights itself and the knot of mystery begins to untie. This was a fun, engaging read that created a desire to peel back the layers of truth surrounding Lex and his friends as he bounces between two realities. I finished it quickly and recommend it to readers who enjoy fantasy as well as those who like to delve into mysteries with interesting implications.

First of all, I've had my eye on this book for a while - the cover art is stunning, and the story's premise is intriguing.

Now, as other reviewers have mentioned, the first few chapters are a little tough to wrap your head around. At first, I found them difficult to grasp, but then I realized that my own confusion was in line with Crawford's authorial intent. That is, I was supposed to feel the same sense of disorientation that Lex experiences in the opening scenes. To Crawford's credit, she toned that aspect down and drew me in with the story as it progressed.

The Edge of Nothing is a fun fantasy read in which the author takes some fun risks with her writing. I applaud her for taking those chances and I believe it works well. It is the first of the series, so of course the major conflicts do not get resolved, but the plot keeps moving and the pace tugs readers along, setting the stage for a finale that I'm certainly looking forward to reading.

Good read, and a worthy addition to my fantasy library!

Kept sucking me in. Really intriguing premise that gets slow dripped with just enough revealed to keep you pushing forward to read more.

I had a few ideas of where this was going or could go based on similar setups, but ... it wasn't EXACTLY any of the things I expected.

Trigger: There's more child death in this than I expected. Like death in fantasy books, not really unexpected, but there are two plot points where specifically young children die (including an infant death) that anyone who has had trauma regarding that should probably be forewarned, and other scenes of destruction that more indirectly reference the death of children.

Love this book. From the very beginning, it draws you in with its unique premise. It pulls you to the edge of your seat and keeps you there with its plot twists and cliffhangers that will take your breath away. You will fall in love with the characters, laughing along with them and rooting for them to succeed. The world of Arameth is enchanting and you won't want to leave. It's a good thing more books are coming because this one will definitely leave you wanting more.
