Effective notetaking 2nd ed: Strategies to help you study effectively Paperback – June 27, 2012

4.2 out of 5 stars 8 ratings

You can predict how well a student will do simply on the basis of their use of effective study strategies. Effective notetaking is for college students who are serious about being successful in study, and teachers who want to know how best to help their students learn. Being a successful student is far more about being a smart user of effective strategies than about being 'smart'. Research has shown it is possible to predict how well a student will do simply on the basis of their use of study strategies. This workbook looks at the most important group of study skills - how to take notes (with advice on how to read a textbook and how to prepare for a lecture). You'll be shown how to: format your notes use headings and highlighting write different types of text summaries and pictorial ones, including concept maps and mind maps (you'll find out the difference, and the pros and cons of each) ask the right questions make the right connections review your notes evaluate text to work out which strategy is appropriate. There's advice on individual differences and learning styles, and on how to choose the strategies that are right for both you and the situation. Using effective notetaking strategies will help you remember what you read. It will help you understand more, and set you on the road to becoming an expert (or at least getting good grades!). Successful studying isn't about hours put in, it's about spending your time wisely. You want to study smarter not harder. As always with the Mempowered books, this thorough (and fully referenced) workbook doesn't re-hash the same tired advice that's been peddled for so long. Rather, Effective notetaking builds on the latest cognitive and educational research to help you study for success. This revised edition comes in a new (slightly smaller) size, with new images, and an extended chapter on taking notes in lectures.

From the Author

I've been reading and writing about learning and memory for twenty years, ever since I graduated with a doctorate in cognitive psychology and realized I had no practical advice for myself when lack of sleep robbed me of my brain.

Study skills are an area of particular interest to me. I was one of those annoyingly bright students who never needed to work very hard to do well enough. It was only in retrospect, as my native cunning failed me, that I realized I would have established a better foundation for expertise if I had applied some effective study strategies.

Then again, no one had ever really taught me much in the way of good study strategies. Back when I was at school, teachers probably had a good enough excuse in that no one really knew much about cognition. Cognitive psychology was yet in its infancy!

But we've come a long long way since then, and it has been my pleasure in the last twenty years to watch our knowledge grow, and to tease out from the wealth of research those bits that are of practical help to students and teachers.

Perhaps the most important knowledge we have gained is the realization that 'talent' and 'intelligence' are not the fixed, inborn attributes we thought they were. A lot of it has to do with the education and experiences a child has; a lot of it has to do with attitude. A person who believes that intelligence isn't fixed, that whatever the subject they can master it, is a person who is far more likely to succeed. This isn't some mystical 'think positive' claim. This is because such a person is more likely to find and use effective strategies.

Be that person. (Or if you're a teacher: help your students be that person!)

Fiona McPherson has a PhD in cognitive psychology, from the internationally-regarded Psychology Department at the University of Otago, New Zealand. She has spent the decades since that achievement following the research into how the human brain thinks and learns and remembers, and communicating that knowledge and its practical implications to a lay audience. She has done this through her long-running and extensive websites (www.memory-key.com and www.mempowered.com), and her books. Her guiding principle is that people are more likely to use effective strategies if they understand how and why they work, and know precisely when and when not to use them.
