Runaway (Empire High Book 5) Kindle Edition
I intended to keep my promises to you. I swear. I loved you, Matthew Caldwell. With my whole heart. I think a piece of me will always love you.
But it all came crashing down when I realized you didn’t keep your promises to me.
I refuse to take any of my days for granted. I learned that the hard way.
So I’m sorry. But I can’t keep my promises to someone who didn’t keep theirs.

About the author

Ivy Smoak is the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and Amazon #1 bestselling author of The Hunted Series. Her books have sold over 4 million copies worldwide.
When she's not writing, you can find Ivy binge watching too many TV shows, taking long walks, playing outside, and generally refusing to act like an adult. She lives with her husband in Delaware.
It’s been a wild ride to chase her dreams...
“I believe anything is possible if you’re tenacious and not willing to let go of your dreams. I still pinch myself knowing how far I’ve come after all the nos I received early on. I found a love for reading in elementary school. I was in the lowest reading class and I was determined to work my way up to the highest. So one summer, I read and read and read some more. And I never stopped. I fell in love with stories. But even though I did work my way up into the highest reading class, I never would have dreamed to be on the other side of the stories I loved so much.
I always wished I could become an author. I just never thought it was possible. But in college, I decided to chase my dream. I wrote my first novel junior year and was…denied by dozens of literary agents. I could have stopped right there. I was basically told it was a pipe dream. That there was no room for my voice in the literary world. But I really hate being told no. So I didn’t let that stop me.
I wrote another book. One I thought was much better than the one I originally submitted to agents. And instead of even approaching literary agents this time, I decided to publish it on my own. I sold maybe 20 copies of that first self-published book. The market basically told me…no.
But the third time’s a charm. With the popularity of Fifty Shades of Grey, my fiancé (now husband) Ryan Hauge encouraged me to read it. He was convinced that this genre was going to be the perfect fit for me. That the reason my first two books didn’t work was because I hadn’t found my niche. And I felt it. This was it. I was meant to be an author. And I was meant to write romance. I started writing right away. And I’ve never looked back.
The response from readers was overwhelming. I was constantly being told how different my romance novels are from what people usually read. How I didn’t follow the normal romance formula of happily-ever-afters. That my books were real, and raw, and riveting. They’re a rollercoaster of emotions, which makes sense. Because when I write, my emotions are all over the place. One minute I’m laughing with my characters, and the next scene I’m sobbing like a baby. I always say…if my books don’t make you cry, then I haven’t done my job!
The best compliment I get, though, is when people tell me that they hated reading until they picked up one of my books. So you know what? I just changed my mind. Making readers cry is important, but sharing the joy of reading is even more important. I want my books to be for adults what Harry Potter was for children. I want to get everyone to love reading again!
In 2019, Ryan and I made the crazy decision to both go full-time working on the business. We took the leap together as a team. And as soon as it was our sole focus…it exploded.
My first romance novel, Temptation (The Hunted series book 1), hit #51 on Amazon’s Best Sellers of 2020 in Kindle eBooks. It currently sits at #6 on this year’s list. It was also featured on Southern Livings most popular romance novels of 2020 at #9 – the only book on the list that was neither a new release or a TV show or movie.
And the best part – we’ve grown this amazing group of thousands of readers that come to discuss their love for my books in my Facebook Group – the Ivy Smoaksters. It’s the most supportive, uplifting community of readers. We always say…positive vibes only. The best part about all of this is being able to connect with readers in such a unique way.
I never gave up. I never let anyone tell me no. And now I’ve sold more than a million copies worldwide, exclusively through self-publishing. I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Because there are still so many fun milestones to hit.
I’m entirely self-published, and I love the control that gives me over my stories. But I still believe that a dream partnership with a publisher is out there. One who understands my vision and loves my characters as much as I do. We’ll find each other soon, I just know it.
And then there’s my ultimate goal - to see my stories come to life as a TV show. And it’s going to happen. Because let’s be honest…everyone wants to see that steamy, wild office scene from Temptation on the big screen. And I never take no for an answer.”

- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2022I had literally goosebumps at the end of this book - wow, wow, WOW!!!!! So up until this point, the 4 books before this one, had my nerves on edge the whole time. I was a freekin' nervous wreck! I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop while reading those - and boy did those shoes drop! Good grief Ivy Smoak, you chucked those shoes straight across a room instead of having them drop. So going into this book, I was on edge at first - thinking the same would happen here. But this book was almost a nice reprieve (in a sense)... and I really quite enjoyed it.
The book before this was from Matt's perspective, and 16 years after the plot of the first 3 books: his life after Brookyn's death. And let me tell you, his story is heartbreaking!! Like beyond. The end of book 3 and parts of Matt's book (book 4) had me sobbing!!! Straight up ugly crying. So where book #4 leaves off, leads us right into this book: Brooklyn is alive! So this book gives us the run-down of Brooklyn's life during those 16 years, from the moment of "the incident" - it tells us the how, why, when... primarily it gives us answers as to why she "died" and then how and why she stayed away.
The beginning of this book was really hard - mostly because we as readers had just experienced a full book worth of Matt's grief, and now we KNEW what was happening with Matt while we were reading what Brooklyn was going through - at times making you want to yell, "That's not what it looks like!!!" to no avail. It's just really damn sad! But this book is also really beautiful. For me, this book was about healing in so many ways: Brooklyn healing from the loss of her mom, the loss of her uncle, coming to terms with losing the life she had and the friends in New York that were meant to be her family, and then coming to terms with being OK and that it was OK to be happy. from there it's about her love for herself and allowing herself to love Miller. In the first three books I was so torn between my loyalty between Matt and Miller - I always really liked Miller though! This book showcases his character so much more and he truly is everything! But just like Brooklyn, my head was all over the place when it came to her loving Miller - my loyalty was torn, and that was primarily because we spent an entire book with Matt and his grief. It's almost not fair!
But alas, as I mentioned, this book really is in so many ways beautiful and about love and living in the moment. That said, Ivy Smoak, per her MO, throws a grenade at the end of this book with a shocker of all shockers. In this entire series she's blown up the ending of each book with such cliffhangers that they have you yelling, crying, seething... And what has she done at the end of this book? Hmm, what? She leaves us where we've never been left before... and that's all I'm going to say about that. And I'm slightly pissed that I now have to wait 2 months for the conclusion for this series. ... I mean, how can you end the book like that? I in no way, shape or form saw any of that coming!!! Ivy, how could you?!?!?!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2024This book…it killed me, I even cried while I was running this morning. I mourned Miller. I cried for Jacob, but I snotted up so badly for Brooklyn. My running partner had to endure the 47 min recap of the series and now is a new subscriber to your work. I loved Miller and my heart will never be the same. Thank you for sharing this epic love with me. I am now going to buy tomato plants and call them Henry and dance in the kitchen with my bewildered husband who rubbed my back while I said goodbye to Miller. Please, let the last book be good. Otherwise I will go full on and pull a JULIA. YKYK

This book gutted me. Walking around the house in a state of confusion like a lost puppy gutted. Ivy is an absolute master at building a character that feels real. I felt every emotion that Brooklyn felt. You’ll need tissues for this book. But you’ll also see a completely unexpected story of friendship, love and happiness.
The end of Matchmaker brought back Brooklyn. Runaway begins with the ending events of Betrayal and we get to see from the moment Brooklyn wakes up, to what she has been up to for the last 16 years.
Her dad proves yet again to be in contention as “worst dad of the year” after stealing her kidney. I am still on the fence about him, but I think at the heart of him he is just a selfish human but does have love for his daughter.
I’ll admit going into this that I wanted a Matt / Brooklyn reunion. But we have to remember how Matt acted after her death and really until Matchmaker, he was not that great of a person. Matt needed to mature a bit.
Brooklyn is put into isolation by dearest dad and guarded with her trusty bodyguard and hero of this story Miller. Miller has been the rock in Brooklyns life and that continues throughout the isolation. Eventually they escape with Brooklyn finally standing up and owning her own future. That was one of the best aspects about this book, Brooklyn finally standing up for herself and taking charge. She is able to find herself and realize what she wants.
That realization is a life with Miller. I was never #teamMiller but I will fully admit I was wrong. Their love was beautiful, it was great, and it was exactly what Brooklyn needed. Miller was the one who was always there and never left her. Their life together was such a joy to see. Especially how they both evolved in their lives and made a home. However with two books still remaining, this story is far from over.
There is a major event that happens and this is where the book crushed me. I can only imagine the emotions Ivy felt while writing this. I bawled and after going through all the emotions of loss, grief and anger, I realized that this story was needed. I can now appreciate the events because there is much left to do before this series can come to an end. Definitely looking forward to book 6.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emotional ride that takes you on a journey!!!
First I want to say is I missed being in Brooklyn’s mind and journey sooo much!
Just being back in her head was amazing and I’m so ready for more. I was absolutely broken in book three and didn’t start healing till this book. I have now watch her grow, I felt her pain and heartache, her loss, her happiness and her experiencing some real life problems and more.
When artists create anything they want to move you, they want you to feel the emotions. This book made me cry four different ways and if that doesn’t show you what an amazing author she is then I don’t know what will. One of those different ways I was full on shaking crying I had to put the book down and I wasn’t even half way in the book.
In empire high 1-3 we have a 16 year old girl who loses her mother and home she’s ever known and is moved to New York City with an uncle she isn’t ready to call uncle. She’s in the midst of trying to heal when she is thrown into a world of more loss and heartbreak, lies, betrayal and attention she hadn’t gotten before while dealing with bullying. This series will tear your heartstrings and heart out at points. It will have you asking how much more heartache is possible but every love story is different, every journey is different and some take a different route before they find their true ending. If any of ivy’s characters deserve the absolute best hea ever in my eyes it is Brooklyn.
I am ready for eh6!! At the moment the storyline is two different trains and I can’t wait for them to crash together!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!
Omg Ivy what an emotion roller coaster of a ride you have taken us all on with this series!!!
Love, Happiness, Sadness, Anxious, Hope, Grief all in one.
I fell in love with all these characters from the first book, no matter all the emotions I’ve gone through I have loved every twist and turn you’ve done.
This book has been everything and more, although we all was desperately hoping it could continue straight from book 4. I am so glad it didn’t and was amazing to read her back story of been hiding for 16 years, I always had a soft spot for Miller and hoped he got everything he deserved and he did till the end.
Although deep down I still hope Brooklyn gets her HEA with Matt, I am now at a point where I just hope she gets a HEA with anyone.
My heart hurts with the amount of heartache and grief Brooklyn has gone through, how can anyone survive that much heartache in a lifetime.
Please please please let Brooklyn finally find the peace her heart needs in Book 6.
Ivy Smoak thank you for bringing us another amazing written story. You are amazing and talented, I can’t imagine the pain you feel writing these storylines when it kills us readers reading them.
Countdown has begun for the next instalment

5.0 out of 5 stars Overwhelming and now impatiently waiting for book no. 6
I was so excited about runaway and have been so looking forward to it. And again Ivy did a really great job with the continuation of Brooklyns story. The book wasn't what I expected but I am very happy about it.
This book contains so many emotions. I felt so much love and Joy but also sadness and anger.
Warning:Spoilers coming.
As it starts with "16 years ago" I expected that we get a little part about how Brooklyns life had been while she was hiding. But this was so much better. We got a very detailed insight into her life for the past 16 years and I was so happy that she was able to make it a happy one. And my heart was breaking for her with what happened at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars O melhor da série
Este ganhou minhas 5 estrelas. Os personagens evoluíram, a escrita também, e não pude parar de ler. Conta o período de 16 anos do ponto de vista de Brooklyn, desde sua falsa morte. Mal posso esperar para ler a continuação.

5.0 out of 5 stars not what I expected
Going into reading this book I have read every single ivy smoak book before it and to say this book is not what I expected would be an understatement. After reading matchmaker I thought this book would be a quick recap of where Brooklyn has been the last 16 years and then jump right into her reunion with Kennedy and Matt. Boy was I wrong. And I am so happy that I was. Without any spoilers I am so so happy I got to read about her and a certain someone’s life over the last 16 years and I’m absolutely gutted and heartbroken from reading this book. It was so blissfully happen right up until the point where it wasn’t and my heart was ripped in two. I am Broken and I’m really hoping Ivy can fix me in book six. And I really really hope it doesn’t take long for book six to come out because I’m truly dying over here. I need those last scenes and last few chapters erased from my mind. I need something happy. It’s like how you can watch horror or murder tv shows all day and night long but right before you go to sleep you need to watch that one quick episode of something comedy so you can sleep right. Ivy I need something happy now! I need to sleep right. And I don’t think I will until book six. And until something happy happens. Until then I’ll be reading other books trying to forgot and fix this broken heart I have.
