For Special Agent Ethan Reichenbach, Jack is just another president. He runs the presidential detail, and he's side by side with Jack every day. He's expecting another stuffed suit and an arrogant DC politician, but Jack shocks him with his humor and humanity.

But there are rules against a Secret Service agent and one of their protectees developing a friendship--big rules. Ethan keeps his distance even as Jack draws him in.

It's a lure he isn't strong enough to turn away from.

I honestly don't know how I can possibly do this book justice. It. Blew. My. Mind. There's such a perfect balance of action, mystery, love, and politics here. The sex scenes were sizzling hot and super emotional. The feelz. Oh my God, I just wanna rave about this shit. ~ Vallie, Gay Book Reviews

It's been a long time since I experienced a book, or a series, that completely blew my mind and left me longing for more... I felt every sensation; I lived and breathed with Jack and Ethan, experiencing the events that shaped their journey in a visceral way that nearly defies description. It's the best thing I've read in 2019, and, in fact, better than any series I've read in the last five years. You've made a fan for life. ~

Enemies of the State (Executive Office Series Book 1)
    Tal Bauer
    2017
    444 pages
    Overall Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    MM Thriller/Suspense Romance

Plot: Ethan Reichenbach is the job. There’s a reason he’s known around the White House as the IceMan: he never gets chummy with the person he’s supposed to protect and he always follows the rules. A Secret Service agent with over a decade of experience, Ethan is the perfect person to lead the newly elected President’s security detail. But he quickly discovers that President Jack Spiers is unlike any man he’s ever met.

Jack Spiers is young, charismatic, and achingly human, unlike the Presidents of old. He’s the kind of man who could change the world if he wanted to. And before he knows it, Ethan is helplessly drawn into friendship with Jack, who is determined to hang out with Ethan, even though they both know better. Suddenly, rules that seemed important a day ago feel pointless and antiquated in the glow of Jack’s sweet smile. And Ethan knows he’s in big trouble.

But getting involved with the President would only end in catastrophe, and Ethan knows he has to find a way to swallow his feelings before it’s too late. There’s no way his gorgeous, very heterosexual boss could ever want a man like him. Besides, he’s supposed to be invisible.

First Take: Gak! This is one of my favorite series of all time. I love Jack and Ethan so much and I want to read a million more books about their adventures together. Ethan is one of the best book boyfriends– so patient and understanding and loyal. This series has everything: a once-in-a-lifetime forbidden love, life-or-death action & adventure, and a stellar cast of characters. I legit cried at the end of the final story– and then I went back to the beginning and read the whole thing again. Please, if you do anything in this life, read this Executive Office series. You won’t be disappointed.

Characters: Ethan Reichenbach is a consummate professional. He’s smart, dedicated, talented with a weapon and built like a beast. In short, he’s the perfect bodyguard. Ethan is loyal to his men and the job, and he’d willingly give his life to protect them all. He’s never had a problem keeping his distance from a protectee, so what is it about Jack that has him swooning? Jack Spiers is a man on a mission. Ever since his wife was killed in action fifteen years ago, Jack has been working to rid the world of evildoers, one general election at a time. But being the president is a totally different ballgame: the never-ending scrutiny is stifling and the work stress is real. He’s surrounded by people all the time and yet still so alone, until Ethan decides to bend the rules a little to be his friend.

Praises: Here, the storyline is as strong as the romance. And that’s what makes it so satisfying. The action and romance are blended so well together, and it’s so much more than two dudes falling in love (though, honestly, I’d also be satisfied if it were just that). Speaking of romance, Tal Bauer is uniquely gifted in his ability to make his characters read and feel like real humans– they are fully fleshed out and three dimensional, and NO ONE pines like the characters in his books. You just get sucked right into all the feelings. It’s like a cozy blanket in front of a fire. I just want to burrow in and never come up for air.

Critiques: Ok, I’ll admit the action in this book is a little over the top, but it’s just so good and painstakingly researched and Bauer writes it in a way that is convincing. Yeah, I doubt a real human could survive half the scrapes Jack & Ethan get into over their 3.5 book series, and I dunno about you, but I don’t read books so I can spend more time in the real world. I read to spend my time in someone else’s. And Jack & Ethan’s world is fun. So, suspend your reality a bit, and try not to dwell on whether or not you think a real person could dodge that bullet and just allow yourself to be carried away on their wild & crazy adventure. Also, you should know there is quite a bit of political intrigue in this series, but it’s fun politics, I promise.

Themes: Faith v Doubt, Good v Evil, Hubris, Identity, Justice, Loneliness, Man v Society, Man v Self, Survival, Power & Corruption

Overall Tone: When you fall in love with your boss, and your boss is the President, suddenly the job gets a lot more dangerous.

Prose: 3rd person dual POV from Ethan and Jack. The words are beautifully written and there is serious attention to detail. It’s the little touches and knowing glances that make this book so swoony. I love, love, love the dialogue between them, they say the sweetest, most wonderful things to each other. Tal Bauer really knows how to get my heart racing– if it’s not because the world is ending, it’s because Ethan & Jack are just #relationshipgoals.

Steam: 💜💜💜💜 No one writes a love scene better. It gets a 4 because I wish there were more of them.

Swear Jar: 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 These two encounter enough life-or-death experiences that heavy swearing is warranted.

    Cliffhanger: HFN, soft cliffhanger

    Memorable quotes:
He tried to focus on China, on Taiwan, on the dangers of invasion and the complications of icing out a global player in the world’s economy, but all he could see in his mind’s eye was the curve of Jack’s lips and the dimple in his cheek when he grinned lopsidedly at Ethan.

He wanted Jack. And not just in the physical sense. Not a one-night stand. For the first time, he wanted everything. The American Dream, the apple pie life. He wanted the morning after, and seeing Jack slowly wake up in his arms.

The colors weren’t as bright, the lighting was dim. The pomp and circumstance had frayed edges. He was now in a post-Ethan White House, and the light, the wonder, had gone out of his world.

Worthy of a reread? A thousand times, YES.

Stand-Alones, Prequels, Sequels, & Tangents: Book one in the Executive Office series. Each book follows the same cast of characters and must be read in order. Tal Bauer came out with a Novella to accompany this series called Interlude: First Noel, which takes place in between book one and two, so I definitely recommend you read First Noel next. Then move on to book two, Enemy of My Enemy.

I struggled a lot to rate this book, because I really, really loved the first half, but the second part wasn't exactly what I was looking for.

I should start by saying this book sucked me in from the start and I got to turn the pages real fast.

It surprised me a lot and by a lot, I mean A LOT! This story is as far from the real world as we can get... An US President falling for a man who was set for protecting him. Well I'm usually running from political stuff, but I hoped this story will keep my interest and it really did! Even if I was afraid I might not love it as much as my friends did, it ended being a pretty great book.

Yes, I rolled my eyes a few times and felt the action dragged a little too long in some points, with too many political stuff and SO much drama, BUT I have to say I enjoyed Tal Bauer's writing style. It's my first book by this author and I want to read some other books by him,. But I'm not sure I'll continue this series, as I'm not really curious to find out who are the enemies and who are the enemies of their enemies. Maybe I will get back to it, at some point. Who knows. All I'm saying is that I enjoyed it more than I thought and it was a nice escape from reality.

I definitely should have read it sooner. It was way better than I thought it would be. The politics aspect that I worried about was rather interesting especially since it contributed to main characters development. Oh gosh, Ethan's depth of feelings for Jack and his pain were felt in every word and every glance he directed at the man. I got invested into the story immediately. Tal Bauer writes in a certain way that just pulls me in. And starting the book with intrigue and a touch of mystery is definitely the best move!

Another aspect of the story that really fascinated me was the workings of the White House and all its inhabitants. Wow, the detail and thought put into this side of story made it so compelling to read. I loved little tidbits, the dark humor the agents shared when it got too much.

I wonder why the author started Jack's POV around 28% mark and not sooner. I guess they wanted to show Jack through Ethan's perspective before letting me decide for myself if I liked him. Oh, how could I not! Jack is such a personable character, a man of strength and loyalty that inspires absolute respect from those around him. I liked how slow the author started with their relationship. From coworkers they turned to friends, then it all went deeper. I loved the fun, the touching and the tense moments between them. The intimate times were so sweet as well as passionate and always filled with emotions. That was not scratching an inch. Both Jack and Ethan risked so much, but in the end life wasn't worth living without the said risk. Tal Bauer made me feel all of this. It was intense, on steroids intense, and I loved it.

The political intrigue, the subtle way small pieces were inserted here and there were very clever. I enjoyed the puzzle, the chase and the action, boy was there action and teeth rattling suspense! I couldn't tear myself away! I loved the secondary characters that played important role in Jack and Ethan's relationship. Some were friends, and some were not. I was surprised as to who was not.

The story was so worth reading, and I am berating myself for not picking it up sooner. I loved the pace, the plot twists and especially the mushy parts where both men who were quite formidable and at times fierce mooned over each other and said such sweet things that teeth would normally rot but in this case made this book even better. Hello, my new book boyfriends!

To put it in a nutshell: fast paced, suspenseful, engrossing, moderate to high steamy, impassioned and moving, with plot twists that will keep you guessing and with a cast of characters that will make you love, hate, cry and get angry but will bring the story to a spectacular finale with a nice HFN. I loved it!

Brillant.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5* Awww.....I need more of First Name and Energiser Bunny!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 21, 2016
So what do you get if you cross House of Cards with Homeland and a dash of 24 for good measure? Only one of the most thrilling and fast-paced books I’ve read in an age, that’s what! Add to that, a beautiful and very romantic m/m romance with two gorgeous MCs consisting of President Jack Spiers and his hunky head of security Ethan Reichenbach, and also a whole host of fantastically fleshed-out and enigmatic secondary characters to really peak your interest throughout, and hey presto, you’ve got yourself the perfect romantic thriller. This was a breathtaking read and being the author’s debut novel made it even more so. The depth of knowledge this writer has with regards to the Secret Service, The Whitehouse and foreign politics in general, is astounding, so much so, they’ve gotta have been connected to this world in some way, or certainly have done some serious amount of research on the subject.

This is an edge-of-your-seat political thriller but it’s also a sort of friends to lovers/GFY romance, although it never feels tropey in the least. Jack has that whole sexy, geeky, bespectacled thing going on, while Ethan is the big, brawny ex Special Forces guy – there is no way that is not a hot combo! Ethan, who is gay and has no interest in long-term relationships, finds himself increasingly drawn to the new president even though it’s against every rule in the book for him to befriend his protectee. Jack on the other hand is straight and a widower 15 years who feels lonely and isolated in his new and high-powered position. The weeks pass and the men very slowly become friends which later leads to attraction. And although Jack was straight, I loved that he didn’t get too hung up on the fact he was falling for a man, yeah of course their was some angst and a little soul-searching regarding this but overall I liked that he accepted he was happy he’d found love again, and that it just happened to be with a man. One of my peeves in the GFY genre is when the sex is rushed and the originally straight guy is seemingly perfect and suddenly very knowledgeable about everything – well this one is all about the slow build up that’s for sure. And although this couple are undeniably hot together, the sex is definitely not gratuitous and doesn’t overwhelm the story at all. Their intimate scenes are more sweet and loving and about learning and trust and probably therefore much more realistic actually. But it was the teasing and playful banter, the texts, the flirting, the complete trust that Jack had in Ethan to stay up all night and discuss foreign politics with him, and not least the off the chain ST that had me grinning like a fool throughout this tale. This was a proper old-school, swoon-worthy romance imo (so hard to find), but never to the point of being sickly sweet, which is another huge peeve of mine.

It’s so hard to go into any real detail about the plot without spoiling it for others, but I will say that this one had it all – guns, bombs, high-speed chases, espionage to name but a few, and as for the reveal of the villain/s? well I certainly didn’t guess outright, in fact only near the very end of the book before realisation struck and even then my heart was in my throat with anticipation of the outcome. And as far as showdowns go? gobsmacking….and read more like a Hollywood blockbuster! And although the ending was entirely satisfying with Jack and Ethan achieving their well-deserved (at the very least) HFN, certain situations were left wide open to further explore. That, coupled with there being so many intriguing secondary characters who I’d kill to hear more from – not least Cooper and Faisal? oh yeah, there’s history there – that I feel this book bears all the signs of the start of a new series (yeah, that was a hint). This is storytelling at its finest, miss it at your peril!

I was midway through reading another book when I started this on audible (I usually have an audiobook and actual book both on the go at once).

And then the other book was shelved and I was obsessively reading about Jack and Ethan.

    God I loved them.

What a great and cleverly complex story, a wonderful romance between two strong and powerful men, I loved the supporting cast and the who-done-it (the mystery person on the phone sure surprised me)!

I’m so keen for what’s next!!

Tal Bauer’s attention to detail and writing that draws you into whatever world he’s created put him at the top of my favourite authors list.

You know that feeling when you have read a good book and it ends and you're falling into this hole, where you hesitate to start another book because no book can be as good as the one you've just finished? Now - imagine this at the end of the series of four books....and this is how I feel after finishing this series.

It's been a long time since I've read four books in a row that kept me so captivated that I couldn't - wouldn't put the books down.
This series can compete with the best thrillers - have you ever read Tom Clancy or Matthew Reilly? Clive Cussler? And you loved them? Fast paced, action filled? Men on missions?

Let me repeat this - fast paced, action filled - a complex story spanning over several books?
Now sprinkle some really good m/m love on top of it, sexy, solid, hot and you might have an idea what you are getting with this series.

One of the best, thrilling series in the m/m genre I've read (and geeeez...I've read a lot).

    The series contains:

    Interlude
    Enemy of my Enemy
