Enemy Dearest (Monreaux Brothers) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,393 ratings

August Monreaux was a stormy sea of a man, the dark between the stars, an electric chill cutting through a crowded room—all wrapped into one wicked, beautiful package.

He was also off-limits.

My entire life, I was kept a safe distance from the notoriously virulent Monreauxs, banned from so much as breathing the same air. And like the good daughter I was, I obeyed those rules.

Until the one time I didn’t …

Only while I sampled him, he devoured me like the forbidden fruit that I was. And in the blink of an eye, my worst enemy became my first love. His poison became my antidote. His touch, my addiction.

And then he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse.

So I didn’t.

But falling in love was never part of our secret arrangement.

Our futures were written in the stars long before either of us were born.

But what a Monreaux wants, a Monreaux always gets.

And August will stop at nothing to make me his—even if it costs him everything.

AUTHOR’S NOTE: This angsty, forbidden romance has major Romeo and Juliet vibes but promises a HEA. :-)

A Rose girl by any other name is still a Rose, and if you are a Monreaux that might as well be the dirt below one's feet. August Monreaux recognizes Sheridan Rose as the naked venus floating in his pool on a hot-as-hell summer night, but why she is there is anyone's clue. He knows, and she apparently is aware of too, that Monreauxes and Roses don't mingle. Enemy Dearest is a modern-day Romeo and Juliet, and Meredith Hills plays the part of Verona.I enjoyed this story! There is a fair amount of rawness to Winter Renshaw's storytelling that feels like she's giving her character's open-heart surgery. They don't get to love easily; they really have to work for it. I can appreciate any story where the characters are put through their paces. But, there were a couple of pet peeves I have with this story. One of the phrases frequently used in the book is 'getting ass' and just skeeves me out. I read a book a while ago where the hero talked about 'bagging girls' and 'getting ass' is just as eww to me. I guess it wouldn't bother me if this was a MM book and it was what the character was 'getting,' but it's not, and that just makes it eww.And then the other thing that bothers me is that I couldn't connect with the best friend. I felt like she lacked appropriate synergy with Sheridan to convey the real bestie membership cardholder feel. Adri is a bust for me.However, August is a win. Let's stick with the winner. I liked the man from go to stop. I would like to say that even when he's being a doo-doo face I wanted to pat him on the head and tell him it was okay. His man parts were what made him dumb. But when he shines, Winter Renshaw really makes this hero pure gold. Kudos, author!I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary advance copy of this book.

I was not expecting the story that I began to read when I opened Enemy Dearest. I didn’t expect to find two young teenage kids the summer before college. I honestly thought that this was not for me. I am too old for this genre. I should have had faith in Winter Renshaw, one of my very favorite authors.

When we are introduced to August Monreaux, he is standing on the side of the built-in pool at his family estate watching the trespassing heroine skinny dipping in the water below. She is his prey. She is going to pay the price for all his family’s hatred of her parents’ sin which cost August a tremendous loss. He was her Enemy Dearest.

Sheridan Rose was his Rose Girl. She was innocence personified. She did not grow up with money. In fact, her father never could keep a job for very long. Her mother was seriously ill. They stretched every penny as far as they could. And, Sheridan did what she could to help, stayed out of trouble, worked a part-time job, and adored her parents.

Sheridan would not give August the time of day. She rebuffed his every advance. She wanted nothing to do with him. After all, she was a Rose and he was a Monreaux.

But something happened along the way. I was intrigued. I couldn’t stop reading. The author knows her trade! She creates the most complicated story lines with twists and turns that the reader does not expect. These two characters grew before my eyes. August had depth and layers. As Renshaw wrote, “he was a thousand-piece jig saw of a man.” That line really stuck with me. He changed so dramatically throughout the book.

As I said, I didn’t think that would like this book when I started it especially because I was sent an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion. And, as I said, I should have had more faith in Winter Renshaw! She has never let me down! This is an engaging, easy read that will captivate you! It did me.

By the way, I ended up buying the book for my personal collection.

~~“A history. A dark, rooted, tragic, ugly history. A history so shrouded we don’t even talk about it … The Monreaux family is off-limits in every sense of the word.”~~

Hot and steamy Romeo & Juliet! The Montagues and Capulets or the Hatfields & McCoys have nothing on the feuding Monreaux and Rose families. This romance teased with the promise of a dark and turbulent mystery involving damage caused by death and blame in both families. Sheridan Rose and August Monreaux -- a pair of teenage Romeo & Juliet offspring -- are off-limits to each other and caught in the middle of a feud they don’t understand in a forbidden love that changes all their lives.

“It’s crazy how a single incident can have a ripple effect that spans the rest of your life.”

As they say: “Nothing good ever happens after midnight” when a summer night of trespassing and skinny-dipping brings these star-crossed lovers fatefully together. The poor virgin that he nicknames “rose girl” and the rich enigmatic boy jaded beyond his years each find mutual temptation in each other, but fight it. He’s programmed to despise her, so she becomes “nothing more than a pretty pawn” in a scheme that backfires. The heavy entanglements in the setup more than hooked me in a seductively passionate story of forbidden love, but as they say “no good will ever come from a Rose and a Monreaux in the same room together.” Rose was sweet and endearing, but no pushover for a boy used to getting his way. And August was compellingly bristly, but a contradiction in thought and action. He was so obviously misunderstood that I wanted to crack him open and learn every hidden facet. Droll and bored. Maddeningly flawed and intriguing. That is, until Rose comes into his life. His wicked, naughty and wild ways hide a really good guy underneath it all. And his inner thoughts were pretty hysterical, the way he views everyone and everything with dismissive disdain. When he strikes out with Rose, it makes him and her even more interesting.

The shifting mood of vengeance, blame, lies and finally forbidden love made me think that the story would follow a different course than it did. As much as I enjoyed the majority of the book, this couple, and the author’s writing style, I expected lovers in their 20s from the blurb, not teens (18 and 19) during the summer before college. The sexual tension and build-up were great, but as good as the slow burn and a few sexy times were, it was more the pursuit of young love, than adult level. The love story evolved quickly, and the feud was kept in the background -- complicated on the surface, but surprisingly easy to unravel and resolve in a fast wrap-up. The separation alluded to in the blurb lasts a very short time and the story takes place in real time within 6 months. The mom’s illness was surprisingly significant and there were some twists to the feud mystery along the way, but it was essentially a teen romance of forbidden love, and not a dark mystery.

I’ve loved this author forever, and have read/own all her books, which never fail to hook me with intriguing romances, compelling lovers, enticing storylines, and a commercially captivating writing style that’s very cinematic. That never changes. And for once, an author truly captivates the actual look and essence of her hero in this luscious book cover. That scrumptious guy really is August Monreaux. This was a sweet love story with a good HEA. The conflict of the family feud took a backseat to the love struck romance. Could this be a setup for a trio of books about all three Monreaux brothers? Hmmmm.

Overall it was decent however the plot was very much rushed and Sheridan was annoying at the very end. Became insecure and rushed to conclusions which u don't do with someone you love and annoys the ever loving heck out of me HOWEVER since the plot was so rushed it lasted about 2.5 seconds so theres that. And i do also like my bad boys a little more "bad." But a decent read
