It’s another exploration into the Aurora Wasteland. The world of Aurora Wasteland provides a background for the strange and weird. The author deserves kudos for building characters that can easily move from one role to another in service to the story. While this may sound confusing it’s the plot that focuses the reader’s attention. The characters are very ordinary people that are easy to identify with. By the end of the book they seem familiar almost like the reader’s friends and family. Meanwhile the roles and surroundings shift like a kaleidoscope. This may sound confusing but it’s not. It’s creepy, crazy and funny but never boring. I highly recommend this book to all adult readers. It will make your worst twisted week seem like a walk in a normal park.

“Engagement” opens with same-gender sex and has a fair amount of swearing & some sex scenes so if you have an issue with either of these things then you may want to skip the book.

We meet Vanessa, or Van, a hard case lone wolf. She falls for Noah, a shy introvert, mysteriously at first sight when he is half-naked after an embarrassing failure of a job interview. They are opposites but everything feels so right between them. An enigmatic doorway is discovered in the field of Van’s work. Van and Noah find themselves in a different version of their world after stepping through it. They soon realise that a soundtrack keeps them anchored in the memories of this meeting as they go through successive doorways into similar yet different versions of their world and find similar but different versions of themselves. There is a lot going on in the story but at the risk of giving spoilers, I’ll just say there is action, there are doorways being crossed and alternative dimensions/worlds to the one you start the story in. There is a cast of characters that keeps the plot complex and unexpected to the end.

This is a standalone story but crosses over into some of Vaughn’s other works in the Aurora Wasteland series. You can follow it without having read these. I haven’t read most of them myself yet but it adds a different dimension to the plot if you have. I noticed this having recently read “The Axe”. There are characters from other Aurora Wasteland stories that show up here.

"Entanglement" is a typical Vaughn Ashby book – fast-moving, strong, relatable (in a very human way) & diverse characters. It sucks in you from the beginning.

I think the book must be a time portal itself. I took my Kobo so I could read Vaughn’s book while waiting the mandated 15 minutes after my 1st Covid vaccination. It seemed like maybe 5 minutes had passed tops. There is no way I had been reading for 15 minutes, but the woman with the registration pad timer said it was. My time was up and that I couldn’t stay there longer to skip work to keep reading. Ah well, back to my work-from-home office in our lockdown, to continue Van and Noah’s story later.

This one is really wacky and WAY out there. 10 hours plus of crazy listening. Multiple stories, multiple characters. Even characters that become or enter into other characters. Very complicated and fun......and funny.
I loved this narrator. She has a very young and innocent voice. But she had no trouble at all with the nonstop swearing! She could let them fly without hesitation or a blink of an eye. Well done. Well told.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary Audible version of this book from the author through Story Origin.

These stories by Vaughn Ashby bring the Aurora Wasteland series to life in different ways. Expect nothing less than great characters, awesome plots, and weird situations that make you think twice...no three times...about life. The world keeps getting more in depth and weirder and I love it. Audio Version: Sydney Fry does a great job narrating these whacky stories.
