Eighteen-year-old Harrison Haddon has grown up alone. Surrounded by wealth, nannies, and material things, all he craves is the approval of his father. Sent away to the boarding school his father and grandfather attended, it’s assumed he will follow in their footsteps from Sydney’s prestigious Ivy League school straight into medical school.

But Harrison doesn’t want to be a doctor. He dreams of music and classical piano. His only true happiness, his escape from the world expected of him, is dismissed by his intolerant and emotionally detached parents.

Levi Aston arrives from London for a three-month student exchange program. Free-spirited and confident in who he is and what he wants to do with his life, Levi convinces Harrison not give up on his dreams. But convincing Harrison not to give up on his family might not be so easy.

About the Author

N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance. She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn't have it any other way. She is many things: a mother, a wife, a sister, a writer. She has pretty, pretty boys who live in her head, who don't let her sleep at night unless she gives them life with words. She likes it when they do dirty, dirty things... but likes it even more when they fall in love. She used to think having people in her head talking to her was weird, until one day she happened across other writers who told her it was normal. She's been writing ever since...

I was really enjoying how this story was unfolding, particularly the darling scene at the airport when Harrison is 'checking out' some guys, including Levi, and Levi totally busts him doing it. As their friendship progresses, I was starting to get concerned....oh, PLEASE don't let there be any fake angst or unnecessary drama. I think I might have been holding my breath.

While the major angst never appeared, there was a bit of a twist I didn't see coming. (I like to think I'm smart. I just didn't see it!) I loved the twist and how it was resolved- though it was not entirely believable. I can live with that; it is a novel, after all.

These two MC are absolutely adorable, and their relationship is sweet. Levi's family is wonderful, too. This entire story was quick to read, but completely delightful and heartwarming.

This is a pretty fluffy short book about two young men trying to figure out what they want out of life and working hard to achieve their dreams. Their relationship is strong but needs to weather some tough times and family issues. I don’t think I’ve read an NR Walker book about such young guys (18/19). I loved it! Super cute and sweet.

Anyone who has read N.R. Walker knows she is a brilliant writer and an outstanding portrayer of the Australian way of life. In her "Red Dirt Heart" series she focused on the wild Outback country with young Aussie rancher Charlie taking young Texas intern Travis into his life and heart in an extraordinary love story.

In this book, she brings us back a step into the urban setting of a Sydney boys Catholic high school, where Aussie Harrison Haddon (I suppose on the cover since he is the narrator) and Brit exchange-student Levi Aston set the tone of the book almost from the start--checking each other out in the Sydney airport. OK, that is not a spoiler, folks, because it gets sooooo much better than that.

The headline I attached to this review is somewhat of a spoiler, but it merely means that the venue has a chance of changing from the somewhat secluded and sterile school where Harrison and Levi have fun and games among some genuine angsty moments for Harrison.

The decision to frame the tale from Harrison's POV is probably what adds to the enjoyment here. I could not put it down until totally consumed because this young man came to know who he was page by page, and he accepted it as he went on with his life--and with Levi--and you are happy to live that with him.

Wonderful tale, wonderful characters, very good love scenes.

Even though the story is short, there is so much packed into it. A great love story, and a story of love and exceptance. I wish that there was a follow up.

“My true love hath my heart, and I have his by just exchange, one for the other given. I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss. There never was a better bargain driven.” ~ Philip Sidney

Harrison, of 'Exchange of Hearts' by N.R. Walker, has everything that money could buy, but what he really needs is to be loved and accepted for who he is. His domineering father is determined that he is going to become a doctor like his father and his grandfather before him. Harrison's dream is to be a classical pianist and he's extremely talented. His only solace is his music and he buries himself in it as often as he can. Harrison hasn't found the courage to stand up to his father. He already feels like a disappointment to his family, Harrison doesn't want them to know he's gay. When all seems lost, a foreign exchange student named Levi gives him a different outlook on life and encourages Harrison to realize his dreams.

At first, Harrison is not keen on having a roommate, even if it is for a short time. He is constantly being bullied by the other boys at his boarding school for being a music nerd instead of playing sports. Only one person knows Harrison is gay, the boy who engages him in sexual activity, then, when it gets to be too “real”, rejects him. When he sees Levi, Aston Harrison thinks he will get the same treatment from Levi. Harrison is amazed to find that Levi is nothing like he thought he would be. Levi is gay but secure in his sexuality. Harrison wishes he could be more like Levi and stand up to his father, but the thought of disappointing him is too much for him to overcome. Harrison still hopes his father will see how talented he is and realize that a musician is what he's meant to be. Harrison dreams that his father will be proud of him even if he chooses music over medicine.

Levi helps Harrison as much as he can, but can't give him the courage to do what he has to live his own life. But Levi is able to think outside of the box and find a way to get around almost any obstacle. He understands why Harrison is in the closet. Levi also knows that if he doesn't break out of his father's iron clasp, Harrison may never be the man he is meant to be. Levi and Harrison form a strong emotional bond, even though they know it may only be for a few weeks. It breaks their hearts to part, but each has to go on with their lives and hope that the distance won't divide them forever.

The familiar theme of a father trying to mold his son into his own image isn't new but can be just as devastating to their child. The relationship between Harrison and Levi is filled with emotion and respect. It is also a coming of age story that deals with real issues young gay men have to overcome to be confident and effective. Harrison and Levi are truly endearing characters. I particularly liked Levi's cheekiness and determination to drag Harrison out of his self-imposed prison. From the beginning, it was clear that Levi has only the best of intentions for Harrison and knows it's his life, it can't hurt to give Harrison a gentle shove or two in the right direction. If you would like to read a love story, with great characters, and a strong message about following your dreams, then you may enjoy this book. Thanks, N.R., for a read that satisfied my heart and mind.

Engaging, heartwarming storytelling so typical of NR Walker. This one does include one clueless/absentee set of parents, who eventually change their tune when they finally hear their son's amazing ones he plays on piano. Other than that, low angst and lots of sweet lovin as a young man finds strength to pursue his life, love and dreams.

    Recomendado.

It constantly astounds me how perfectly you create your characters and the plots are always entertaining. I grew up in Sydney, Penrith actually so it was nice to read about a place that was so recognisable. I get lost on the emotions of your leading men and the only bad thing about reading your books is I am running out of new ones, thank you so very much.

If you have not read every N.R. Walker book you are sorely missing out. This one was sweet and beautiful. They are all beautiful. Levi and Harrison were an adorable couple and anyone who has longed for the approval of their parent would easily relate. The writing is so good that if, like me, you've never doubted your family's love she still manages to make you feel it down to your bones. A truly talented author. You would be remiss to not buy all of her books.
