Mind-reader Simon Hartstongue must return to the country of his mortal enemy in order to fight for survival ...

Simon Hartstongue, accompanied by the mind-cane and the snow-raven, must travel back to the land he came from to offer support to the people he once tried to kill.

From Gathandria, Annyeke Hallsfoot endeavours to help him but her attentions are focused on rebuilding the city after the wars.

Alone and faced with the anger of his people and hindered by the fragility of Ralph Tregannon's leadership, Simon has to find a way to bring healing to a dying country and to renew his relationship with Ralph. But the odds and time itself are stacked against him.

The Executioner's Cane is the third and final book in the Gathandrian fantasy series and is perfect for fans of epic fantasy fiction.

This series was nothing as I expected. I was drawn deeper with each chapter til I couldn't wait to pick up the book at every spare moment. It was beautifully written and I hope there will be more. Thank you Ms Brooke.

Really I did. I liked the premise, liked the flawed nature of the characters, liked the world. Unfortunately the author lost me with the romance, which was based on the premise that love strikes one with no warning, and that once struck a person is really helpless to change. Even if the person he is in love with is a terrible person.

She tried to redeem Ralph, but he had been too broken and the redemption seemed very artificial. I would have liked this book if she had made Johan the love interest.

There were other issues. I found myself just thinking many times that I was sad that the series wasn't better, because it was clearly an ambitious project. I liked the author's prose and could see enjoying books written by her, but only if she starts giving characters some input into who they end up with.

Additionally, the constant discussion of Simon's cowardice got really old. What he really was was fearful. He was afraid of everything. Does being afraid make one a coward? She never really addresses that. In the final book, Simon is filled with self-blame, and ends up being sort of a Christ metaphor, as he is universally blamed for things that were really the doing of others. She never really addresses that either, so apparently we are supposed to take it at face value that the blame was warranted. And, of course, all of this horror is the result of Ralph's power play and cruelty, but apparently this author is of the "we can't choose who we love" camp, so if you accidentally fall in love with a total jerk, oh well!

Could not finish the book…and I hate that. It made me create a "Boring Books" collection on my Kindle. The whole trilogy went in!
