Exile is the first book in a new series by Glynn Stewart and a welcome addition to his lineup. I will tell you upfront that before you read Exile, you should take the time to read Stewart's Ashen Stars, a novella and prequel to this novel. It provides background information that will make reading Exile a more immediately engaging experience and answers the question of why the book's protagonist takes the actions that he does.
Exile tells the story of Vice Admiral Isaac Gallant, only child and heir to the dictator of the Confederacy of Humanity: First Admiral Adrienne Gallant. A man of honor, Isaac Gallant lived with the knowledge that his mother killed his father when they ended up on opposite sides of the rebellion that she led. In events covered in the novella Ashen Stars, Gallant (a very appropriate name for our hero) discovers that his mother has succumbed to the temptations of absolute power and is as corrupt as the officials that she originally overthrew. Exile begins with an attempted rebellion led by Archangel and Bombardier. Gallant is Bombardier and Archangel is an unlikely revolutionary: Amelie Lestroud, an interplanetary superstar known for staring in action movies. The attempted revolution, however, is just the jumping off point for the story. The rebellion fails, spectacularly, in the first chapters of the book and our protagonists are arrested. Unable to stomach killing her only child, and hedging her bets for the survival of humanity, the First Admiral orders all the rebels, political prisoners, and anyone with a history of speaking out against the government to be rounded up and exiled. They are loaded into spaceships that make up a fully equipped expeditionary and settlement group and shipped through a wormhole that can only be opened one more time before it is closed for two hundred years. At the other end of the wormhole is a planet suitable for colonization - and this is where the novel takes off. Exile is the story of this group of people as they settle on their new home and try to build a government and society better than the one they left behind. Along the way they encounter formidable beings, engage in epic space battles, and their resolve and honor are tested. Exile does not leave readers hanging, but does position our heroes for the next chapter in their adventure - and I, for one, can't wait.
This book has all the things that I most enjoy in a Glynn Stewart novel: action, space battles, and heroes that strive to live up to the very best of humanity. Honor is real in the Stewart universe and his protagonists are willing to pay the price for it. I will say that there are a couple of rather abrupt transitions in the book. The rebellion is over in the blink of an eye. This is why I think it is so important that readers take the time to read Ashen Stars first. The transition from the space battle at the end of the book to events that take place after they return home was also a little abrupt and I had to go back and reread that section to make sure that I hadn't inadvertently missed something. Having said that, don't let these things scare you off. Exile is the perfect read for someone looking for action, adventure, epic space battles, and the very best in humanity.
For the sake of transparency, I should tell you that I received an advanced reader's copy of this book in exchange for an honest review; however, I also liked this book so much that I bought a copy and also bought the audiobook. This is my way of making sure that Glynn Stewart keeps telling these stories that I so enjoy reading. So, do yourself a favor if you are looking for an action-filled book that will remind you about the best in humanity, and buy a copy of Exile now. Then, enjoy!
