Exploited (The Dark Redemption Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 578 ratings

A dark and dangerous story with a killer ending…

~ Brede Rawls ~

For years I’ve left a path of death and destruction wherever I go, earning my way as a paid assassin. I promise myself that after one last job I’ll have the money I desperately need to quit taking lives. That’s how I find myself back in my hometown of Lexington.

Blair Lockhart isn’t like the other targets. She’s beautiful and harmless, and I unknowingly saved her life when I was supposed to silence her forever.

That doesn’t make me her guardian angel, though. Letting Blair live comes with a cost – her innocence and my freedom.

The two of us have more in common than we thought. We were both ruined by our pasts that just so happens to intersect. Pasts that we’re still trying to outrun.

Fate brought us together, and now, I’ll do anything to protect Blair. I won’t rest until I finally punish the man who ruined both of our lives.

There’s just one problem. Blair has been keeping secrets from me – the biggest one of which is that I’m not the only one who has defiled and exploited her.

WARNING: Exploited is the first part of the Dark Redemption Duet which means it ends with a cliffhanger. The story contains dark, dirty, and dangerous situations intended for mature readers.

A fast read that will dismay and delight you. I can't imagine what she must have gone through during her short life. I wasn't sure about the nightly visitor or the daytime encounter. I disliked Aden immediately. I had thought something was going on but I did not get it totally right...you got me when usually I've figured it out. I was immensely turned off by Aden and when he discussed everything with someone later, I was even more upset. Then later on his discussion with B was very upsetting. Another clue that you can't trust people because they might have an agenda. Neither of them can redeem themselves as far as I'm concerned. I would have done what she did too. I need to read Redeemed now.

This was an okay read. I was a bit confused in the beginning as there was the point of view from two guys both staking out Blair, so it took me a few chapters to figure out who was who and what the heck was happening. I've read a few dark romances before and I don't know if I'd describe this book as one. It was more about a vulnerable girl who'd escaped from a mental institution (after being put there from her evil father...) who is naive and taken advantage of, particularly sexually, by two males with their own agenda. I didn't find the steamy scenes too appealing; more unbelievable and a couple were a bit off colour. This didn't really give me the alpha male vibe for the men, but made me dislike them a bit. Blair witnesses her mother's murder and is traumatised by it. She's sent away to a mental institution until she escapes at 18, leading to the hit being put out on her. She returns to her childhood home (because no one would think to look there, right?!) where she encounters a man who has found her when breaking into the house looking for evidence against her crooked DA father who is off on his honeymoon with the new missus. Due to the trama, she doesn't speak much at all, so the dialogue is pretty one-sided unless it's one of the chapters from Blair's point of view.

Some parts of the book were a bit repetitive. Brede, the hitman, is constantly on about how bad he is and what a killer he is. This would have been a bit more believable if he wasn't the ripe old age of 22. Some of the 'hot' scenes were ridiculous. Blair was a girl who is barely 18 with no world experience at all, but she manages to steal a car and drive to her old house. She's suffering from trauma, but suddenly these two hot guys can use their suave and knowledge of getting girls off to make her a willing participant from the get go and easily manipulated once they put the moves on her. Next minute she's letting a stranger whose face she can't see feel her up and is giving a bj to the other guy in a public carpark with witnesses. The majority of the book is just her flipping between the two. I call bullsh**. The dialogue was also ridiculous. I know it's fiction, but people don't act or talk like that.

As advertised, this does end in a cliffhanger. That being said, I didn't like the characters enough to care what happens next so I'll be giving the next book a miss. It was an okay read, but I could take it or leave it. I grabbed this one when it was free. I probably would have been harsher in my review if I'd paid for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where is quantum theory going?
Reviewed in Australia on October 28, 2018
Although well versed in what could be called Classical (Newtonian) physics, and having come to terms with the often counterintuitive basics of quantum mechanics, there remained a dissatisfaction with some aspects of quantum theory, specifically related to the expanding universe and the “Big Bang” theory of its origins. How something which was basically nothing could suddenly explode into a mass of components which would continue to expand infinitely was not philosophically satisying. This having attention drawn to this little book was an opportunity for some enlightenment, especially in light of the existing enthusiastic reviews.

Having read the book (several times because of the new concepts with which it deals) I was not disappointed. Having traced the development of our concepts of the “granular” nature of matter, which exists in a “cloud” in space but where their exact location at any one time cannot be defined, from the ancient Greek philosophers to the present, the writer tackles the most recent views. It wqs satisfying to find that my concerns about the Big Bang origin of the universe had been confirmed in that, extrapolating backwards, matter could not have been condensed into a single point (the singularity) because that would transgress the newly accepted view that repulsion between the fundamental components would prohibit it, the concept of the “Big Bounce” resolved the difficulty because if matter were condensed to near that boundary the process would inevitably reverse. Likewise the infinite expansion was also wrong. This does not of course explain where the whole process might have started, and sine the concept of infinity seems untenable there must be processes which we have not yet envisaged let alone proven. Loop theory (or loop quantum gravity) is currently the most promising concept which fits all the evidence. The author however is willing to admit that there are still “mysteries” and as always in science, one needs just one piece of evidence which does not fit to result in a rejection. As he says there is much about which “he is not sure”. Although this book was originally written (in Italian) in 2014, it is current in that it includes the discovery (in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN) of the Higgs field (the Higgs boson which amusingly is described on the first mention as a Higgs bosun).

This book is challenging: as I mentioned I had to read it three times before I felt I knew what it contained, even although some aspects are still Mysteries: but very well the effort.

4.0 out of 5 stars Despite being dark it’s interesting
Reviewed in France on April 28, 2019
It’s quite dark but steamy story. Blair is certainly lost, she don’t have experience with real world or men. She refuses to speak due to post-traumatic shock. Brede and Aden are not very positives heroes here. They both use her, in many ways and for many, however so different, reasons. Plot is interesting, idea pretty original, and cliffhanger is killing me.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 2, 2018
Exploited by Lane Hart a five-star read that will break you. This is the first book in the Dark Redemption series and it comes with a warning that you will want to have book two ready and waiting as there are some major cliffs in this book and I usually hate cliffy endings but this book has been amazing, and I have every faith that the second one will be just as good as Lane Hart is an author who will break you, but she also has the talent to put you back together again. Each of the three main character’s in this story have their own unique story to tell and they use their own voices to tell us, not all of the stories have happy endings or happy beginnings, and some of them are hard to read, but the thing about Lane Hart is that even the hardest of things to read still have a poetry to them that make them more palatable. This was one of the hardest reads I’ve read for a while, but in the same breath I can’t wait till I’ve finished writing this to get to reading the second book. Thank you again Lane for being amazing.
