- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2015Feline Fascinations: The Adventures of Boris and Olga by J.M. Northup is more than a young person’s story book. First of all, the writing and dialogue is wonderful. The amount of research that went into these stories overall is far-reaching. The author thanks the man who provided much of the farm life information. This shows a collaboration that must have been long and tedious but it helps to breathe life into the actions of the characters. It made the setting and background come alive for me. It shows the care taken by the author to write exactly what the book needed to include.
Additionally, the author shows an understanding of situations in human life and how they play out and resolve. This shows up in how life’s lessons and interaction happen between the animal characters. The main characters are, of course, cats. This is a book for young children. While each story is separate unto itself, each story carries the book forward. I can see this book being read to children in an on-going basis, perhaps as each season approaches and passes as they do in the stories. Children have a way of identifying with animals. It is my belief that in doing so with these stories, children will learn valuable lessons in how to act and react and how to treat others in real life.
This is a wonderful book for young children. It’s entertaining while possibly instilling emotional and moral values in the young. I highly recommend this book to those who read to their children. I also highly recommend it to young children who read on their own. And I wholeheartedly give it 5 stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2015Boris is a stray kitten. He gets picked up by the pound, though, it's not too long before he is put up for adoption.
He is taken by a family, hoping it will be his forever home.
There are certain surprises for Boris, like he'll have to share his home with a cat named Olga, who is described as being grouchy most of the time.
The details of what this story is really about are better left to the reader to discover. The reader will, however, be transfixed on reading every word, going on this adventure right alongside Boris and Olga.
One of the real fascinations about this book is the fact that it's about animals; animals who talk, have feelings, and thoughts. The author uses carefully selected words to describe every movement and behavior allowing the reader to experience something so very feline.
This book should appeal to 5th grade and above, though younger children will love it too, only that they'd need help reading it. It would make for a great storybook to read a chapter every night at bedtime.
And one of the more amazing elements about this book is the mere fact that you don't have to be a cat lover to love this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2014I received a free copy of this book for beta reading.
I read it to my kids at bedtime, and they were quite excited each day, begging for the next chapter. They loved the tale of Borris the kitten and how he went from the street to the Humane Society to his forever home on the farm. They loved Olga the cat and the rest of the cast of human and animal characters.
I would recommend this book for family reading for children in preschool to late elementary, and for developing readers to challenge them. The interesting storyline should keep animal lovers enthralled. Do keep in mind that the author does not sugar coat things. There are a few tragic events that might need to be discussed with the children.
In addition, this is a great value. No short single night story, this collection contains weeks' worth of reading, divided into short, self-contained stories, each good for a single evening.
All in all, Feline Fascination provides hours of family fun for animal lovers of all ages.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2016I absolutely love stories about cats! That is why I wrote one about cats also! Even though this story is geared for children's reading, I enjoyed it very much. The author did a great job of making these cute and cuddly cats come alive and tell their story of their many adventures. Living on a farm, they make many friends and learn many new things. The story is both entertaining, but also very educating. Also I loved how the story is told throughout each season. I loved the main characters and Pearl and Charlie. Although I have to say I was totally enchanted by Gus.The illustrations are some of the best I've ever seen in a story book. Kudos to the author!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 3, 2015Feline Fascinations is a delightful book for children and adults alike. Not only does it tell the story of kittens Boris and Olga, brother and sister growing up together on a farm, but also relates many stories about the various animals that live on the the farm and the kitten's encounters and experiences as they go about their daily lives. The book is written in such a way that it not only tells a compelling story of friendship and life in general as seen through the eyes of the animals, but is also highly educational as it teaches children not only about the animals that live on the farm, but about life in general and the workings of a farm. This is definitely one for cat lovers everywhere.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2015Wonderful story about a stray kitten called Boris, who, from a tragic beginning, finds a home and a family. This book is full of glorious characters such as his cranky cat 'sister' Olga, a dog called Charlie (with some very dubious dietary habits), and a hilarious bunch of heifers! Told from Boris's point of view, the tale unfolds over the first year of his life in his new home - the author's love of cats really shines through every twist and turn he takes! Crammed with adorable pictures of Boris and his family - if you love cats, you are certainly in for a treat!
