Helped heal my homesickness
Do you love missed connection romance stories? Do you love when the main characters can't catch a break? Do you love a good happily ever after? Then this book is for you. Maria works and lives in New York and has no time for herself let alone a relationship. Hunter works and lives in Washington D.C. and also has no time for himself let alone a relationship. Both are called back to Philadelphia for New Year's Eve. Thus triggering a set of missed connections, mishaps, and missteps while both figure out that sometimes you need to slow down and take the time to march to a different beat. There is a second book on the way and I will let you all know when that is released. This is your standard operating clean happily ever after romantic comedy. And I'm here for all of it. I can honestly say, I would love to see this as a Hallmark movie. Ooh, who do I talk to about that? If you know, please let me know. I'm not usually a reader of the rom-coms but all I needed to see to know I wanted to read this was Philly and Mummers. Everything else was extraneous to me until I started reading it. I am totally going to recommend this book in my book clubs for February. It absolutely lives up to expectations for the genre. The characters. Let me tell you about these characters. I grew up around 16th and Bigler in South Philly. These characters reminded me of family and friends and family of friends. It was like going back home. And my homesick self needed it. I will not lie to you on this. I grew up knowing people like Maria and her cousins. And God save the queen, I have had cops called on me because I went AWOL no communication for 24 hours. This is before cell phones. So, yeah. These characters felt like home. And that's about the best thing this time of year. I guess maybe I was reading this for the wrong reasons. I really didn't read it for the romance. I wanted a quick trip home. And that's what I got. Rom-coms tend to be a little formulaic and predictable but the same can be said of cozy mysteries. Any genre really if you go by the beats method. That all being said, once I sat down and made a time to read, I cleared this book in two hours. It is a page turner. There is always something happening. There was never a boring or dull moment. Fast paced, funny, and a little sweet romance. You had me at Mummers, though. I am interested to see how they're going to resolve the distance gap. And I know Antonetta is never going to stop talking about marriage and babies and where they will live. I do want to eventually see Hunter's father and mother. And who won? Was it Quaker City or Fralinger? Who came after a newbie never marched not even actually a Mummer? And can I get that recipe for sausage and pepper? I literally read some of Antonetta's dialogue out to my husband. He was concerned. Who recorded my father? Who recorded me? Am I doing the audiobook? The only problem I had is that they went to Pat's for cheesesteaks. You can tell those boys aren't from there. No self respecting Philly boy would leave South Street and Jim's to go to Pat's. I will forgive this though because apparently it was five in the morning. But still. Ew. I would absolutely and will recommend this book. If you like a good Hallmark Christmas movie. If you like a goofy rom-com. If you're tired of all these movies taking place in a small town. Here you go. Read this.

I am a sucker for a seasonal story and the cover really caught my eye. First Night is a fast paced, engaging tale, featuring a collection of genuinely likeable characters, hilarious mishaps, and mis-timings.
Set on New Year's Eve, it follows two complete strangers, Maria and Hunter, as they get caught up in a chapter of predicaments, which threaten to derail their - individual - new year celebrations.
As the evening wears on, they keep bumping into each other and there is definitely a spark, but before they can explore it, something interferes.
Although a delicious, and at times hilarious, romance, this is also about people coming together to help others when the unexpected happens. So many things go wrong but, it is because they do that makes the story so right!

This is my first book by Ms Sabik-Jaffe. It won't be my last!

First Night, by Carol Sabik-Jaffee, takes place over two short days. As promised, it’s a romance where two people coincidentally (or IS it coincidentally?), literally, run into each other and end up spending most of New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day together.

As is fitting with such a whirlwind tale, the prose is fast flowing, keeping this an incredibly light and breezy read. At times, the choice of descriptive words is quirky, but it seems mostly in keeping with the nature of the main character Maria Vigliano.

We quickly see two sides to Maria. There’s New York Maria who is uptight, constantly doubts herself and her skills/talents, and is fearful that at any time she’ll suddenly lose her job. Then, there’s Philly Maria, who is a take charge, sometimes rash, firecracker. Maria is very grounded by her large extended family and upbringing, and although she initially makes a case for not adhering to her helicopter mother’s rules for living, she’s consciously aware of them at all times.

Maria’s background differs from that of her New Year’s romance, Hunter Reed whose parents divorced when he was young. At that time, Hunter asked to be sent to boarding school and his parents were good with that because it allowed them to start new lives. The closeness of Maria’s family is something Hunter has never experienced before, and it enhances his attraction to Maria.

Hunter is only in Philly for New Year’s because a cleaning woman, Olympia, in his D.C. office convinces him that he needs to go out, and so he takes a train to meet up with his Penn State buddies to party and go to the First Night Ball. Maria, who professed that she would rather hole up in her small NYC apartment, yields to pressure from her mother to help with her family’s Mummers Parade preparations, and heads to Philly on a train. Both trains are delayed by some undisclosed problem on the tracks at Wilmington, DE (possibly a body on the tracks), and so they run into each other at the 30th Street Station when they’re rushing to get cabs.

Then Maria’s cousins (girls who go “woooo”), talk her into going to the First Night Ball where, after travailing a series of wacky events trying to get there, a friend sneaks them in. She and Hunter meet up again, and share a small New Year’s kiss, but then Maria steals a horse carriage when she learns her father has been injured and is in the hospital. The Woooo Girls are still with Hunter and his friends, and so Hunter and Maria are reunited, and share another, much more romantic, early morning carriage ride before Maria has to take over preparation for her family’s Mummers Parade performance.

At this point, Olympia shows up again. She helps Maria get costumes ready, and lectures Maria on letting people help her. Then when they run out of materials, and Maria goes to fetch more, Olympia somehow completes all the remaining costumes and disappears. She shows up again to save the day at the parade, too.

The book never explains who – or WHAT – Olympia is, but I believe some clues are laid Hopefully, in the promised Sequel, A Second Chance, we’ll not only see how Maria and Hunter’s romance develops, learn whether the Woooo Girls continue to see Hunter’s friends, and get introduced to the social climbing Holly back at Maria’s office; but, we’ll also finally learn about Olympia.

This is a very entertaining read, and I look forward to the sequel!

Like a glass of the best champagne sipped in a New Year's Eve toast, "First Night" is delightfully effervescent and promises good things to come. It tickles the senses without ever being too sweet. This clever twist on a Cinderella story features Maria, a heroine who is her own fairy godmother, stepping in to save the day...New Year's Day, that is...and bring a hapless crew of Philadelphia Mummer's to successfully strut their stuff down Broad Street. And what role will Hunter, that princely stranger she keeps bumping into, play in the big parade...and in Maria's life? With an entertaining cast of colorful South Philly cousins and former frat boys that keep us laughing all the way, you'll find yourself rooting for Hunter and Maria to finally exchange more than just phone numbers... and have more than one whirlwind "First Night" together!

A very nice read. It’s romance with a few amusing scenes; Maria hijacking the horsedrawn carriage was a funny scene. There is a kind of romantic cinderella vibe to it. Overall I very much enjoyed the book and look forward to the sequel.

A lovely romantic story of two professionals meeting in somewhat unusual circumstances. Fate seems set against them but attraction and love at first sight wins.

I liked the way the chapters alternated between the two MCs and the quotes from Maria's mother at the start of each of her chapters was a great idea.

    A heart warming read.

This is a delightful rom com reminiscent of those all-star-cast ensemble movies.
A series of unlucky events turns Maria & Hunter's meet cute to meet cringe! A great way to spend the festive season getting to know and rooting for the couple (and their friends & family) as they navigate a less than conventional New Years eve.
