Awakening Fractured Memories: Volume 1: A Collection of Eerie Dark Fantasy Short Stories Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

Nobody can forget The Awakening, but everybody remembers it differently.

The Awakening changed the face of reality itself - a cataclysm of dimensional proportions, unleashing all manner of demonic beasts upon the world of man. Now, only fractured remnants of humanity survive; locked in an endless battle against the forces of darkness.

In Awakening Fractured Memories, you’ll delve into the recollections of five pivotal characters in the realm of The Awakening – each reliving a foundational event that set them on the course toward turning back the tide of evil.

Venerable wizard Dezmond must revisit the tragedies of his past if he hopes to provide his granddaughter with a future. Academy athlete Seth needs to learn to bend the rules if he hopes to win a game of life-or-death. Scheming William develops an obsession with an ancient text, which threatens to turn his closest friends against him, while demon hunter Astral has to fight for her freedom from the very depths of Hell itself.

Finally, in the lair of mad scientist Mallik, an abominable chimera is unleashed – forging a twisted alliance and throwing everything Mallik thought he knew about demonic lore into question.

Fast-paced, tautly written, and rich with dream-like symbolism and visceral detail, Awaking Fractured Memories is a collection of five linked stories that will plunge you deep into A. V. Dalcourt’s The Awakening universe.

Fans of George R. R. Martin, Terry Brooks, and H. P. Lovecraft will love this collection of fast-paced, eerily visceral short stories.

About the Author

Amber V. Dalcourt is an author of non-romantic dark fantasy with Lovecraftian undertones. She is the author of the AWAKENING FRACTURED MEMORIES SERIES and is currently working on AWAKENING: PRODIGY. She has recently released AWAKENING FRACTURED MEMORIES VOLUME 1. Amber was convinced that her childhood home was haunted. Distorted visages made their presence known to those who dared stare into the hallway. In the basement, the voice of an elderly man sowed confusion and discord. These experiences and more left a lasting impression and affected how she crafts the unsettling elements of her stories. Drawing on her occult heritage to combat her fears, it was only natural that she'd fall in love with fantasy stories that focused on magic and all-powerful beings to thwart the darkest of evils. But magic solutions don't solve worldly problems... Using the subtleties of human behavior to craft her demons, rituals, and magic systems, Amber is a lover of modern sorcery, psychological character portrayals, epic battles between good and evil and the huge grey area that separates them.

I was given this book for free to read and review. Have you ever heard of a series of books and wondered if it’s for you? Sometimes authors write side novels which are prequels to the stories, or companion pieces. They usually are shorter than a full novel and give you a glimpse into the worlds and characters created by the author. This book is one of those. It is a group of short stories that happen in the Awakening universe and give you some foresight into the chaos of earth’s future. Years ago rifts formed in the atmosphere letting in demons from another dimension. It is the job of Red Order of demon warriors to destroy as many demons as possible, but time has blurred loyalties and the craving of magic and demon control can be very intoxicating. Anyone with enhanced abilities is shunned and treated as a freak, but those abilities could be the hope of mankind’s future. The tales revolve mostly around three people. Astral a teenager who is enhanced and has been a formidable demon hunter sense an early age. Seth a young adult who is also a remarkable demon hunter, but is intent on proving himself on the front lines of the demon war. William is a few years older than Astral but is tired of living in Seth’s and his father’s shadow; he is intent on becoming a famous demon hunter even if he has to cut corners to do so. This was my first glimpse into this world and I was sucked into its crazy chaos. The description of what is left of the world and the people living in it is palpable. I loved these main characters as well as the adults in their lives that creates the assassins they have become. Each was forced into their situation by these adults for very different reasons but non the less they are needed for the world’s survival. I intend on reading more of this new series. It takes the dystopian trope and turns it on it’s head and gives it a Lovecraftian twist.

Note: I received an ARC of this book for free in exchange for an honest review.
Note: I've not read the work of this author or other books in this series prior to reading this collection of short stories.

If you're a fan of the "Awakening" series and/or of this author, you're likely already familiar with the characters that you will find on these pages. As an avid fan, you're likely going to be very excited to see some of your favorite characters in different times/settings and you'll enjoy the quick pace of this short story collection.

This being said, for a "volume 1" book there's no real introduction to the characters if you do not follow the author on different platform and/or have not read the "Awakening" books before. As a reader unfamiliar with any prior work by this author, I did enjoy the darkness within the world that is being created. There's darkness here. There is absolutely no romance (which, if you're tired of all fantasy having a romance subplot, this is a huge plus). Gritty, dark, and unique because of the changing POVs in the story there is something here to enjoy. However, for me, the characters and the world were never "finished" in a way that I fully understood.

So in short, if you're a fan of this author's work and have read other work by her -- this is for you. If you have not, I'd put this volume on hold until you read through the other offerings of this world. I feel like things would make a touch more sense then.

Described as the recording of dreams, this is a collection of the impression of stories in a apocalyptic world that often veers deep into nightmare. Though they all take place in a shared universe, each story is unique and the characters take on a different feel in each one. Much as in dreams, the stories are full of vivid imagery and sudden shifts along side repeated motifs and actions. There is little dialogue or much resembling a standard plot arc. Instead the reader is thrust unaware into this bizarre world after an event no one can forget and everyone remembers differently. The stories end as abruptly as they start, often just as the story is coming into focus.

This is the type of book that lingers with you. Though strange at first, it slowly builds a haunting picture that piques the imagination and draws the reader in.

This is an honest and voluntary review of an ARC

Loved this collection of short stories! The six stories are linked, each a fractured memory. They describe important pivotal events in the early life of Astral, an apprentice demon hunter.

This is post apocalyptic world where humans live in safe compounds, the wealthy underground in the capital. On the surface dwell farmers and others who toil to provide food and safety for others. The surface dwellers' diet is supplemented by nourishing food cubes; most fresh food is reserved for those underground . Outside the protected areas roam demons. There is magic too. A complex well structured world, with great characters. A must read. Great to have stories without the romance and insta love.

Dream Eater - Astral's grandfather returns to the family compound to secure the grounds and to prepare for her arrival. But first he must overcome traumatic memories or be engulfed by the dream eater.
The Game - Beta testing - a virtual reality school play goes rouge and attempts to kill the actors, so Seth goes off script to save his friends. This was funny, great dialogue!
Arcanum Mutatio - William, an apprentice demon hunter, steals a transformation spell and finds himself hunted by his friends.
Guiding Light - Astral descends into the catacombs to close the rift between realms, stop the demon hoard crossing, and retrieve a magically sealed cursed tome.
Shadow Prey - Seth and Astral tasked with taking the cursed tome to the capital.

I especially liked the preface which gave the threads of inspiration behind each story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review on Fractured Memories
Reviewed in Germany on October 17, 2019
The author asked me to give an honest review so here you get it.

For those of you looking for a short review, here is the summary.
    Short review:
Great book and even greater world of dark fantasy with interesting and deep characters. There is war, emotion, mysteries, action, death but also humor.

    Long review:
Why I chose to read Fractured Memories:
Initially I was reading another book from Amber Dalcourt on Wattpad where one can read books that are in the process of being written for free. There are books there that I enjoy reading but are not remarkable, those I just read. There are books there where I enjoy reading each chapter so much that I want to congratulate the author for it, those I give my vote for (little star button to press). And then there are books there like Awakening: Prodigy where each chapter grows so dear to me that I take the effort to comment on it and in my tiny way help shape the writing of it. So that book, despite having had all signs of a book still in progress, was able to capture me and forget the world around me so much that I even missed my bus stop once. Now after having finished reading all the chapters available on Wattpad I was given the option to read additional stories of that world in form of the Fractured Memories book and of course I took the chance.

What is in Fractured Memories (without story spoilers):
It is a collection of five short stories plus the first chapter of Awakening: Prodigy (about which I talked in the previous paragraph) all taking place in the same fictional world. The world is highly complex with its rich culture and history of having both science and magic. There is war, emotion, mysteries, action, death but also humor. You see the world from the eyes of different persons.

How I liked the book (without story spoilers):
I liked the second story the most. It had humor, adventure, science fiction, action, criticism of society and characters with depth.
The first story I found both confusing and fascinating, so here not only positive review but it was asked for a hones one anyway.
The third story I liked because the experience of the protagonist was described so well.
The forth story again was a bit confusing with the magic system not really clear to me by now but apart from that I still enjoyed reading it.
The fifth story I also really liked but it stopped too soon, I want to read more of it!
The first chapter of Awakening: Prodigy is a bit too dark for me but I could understand much more what was happening there now after I have read the rest of it’s story. Which means I am glad having read it but would prefer to not read it as the first chapter of the book.
As a whole I really loved the deeper insight I got into the world and characters of Awakening. I enjoyed reading it and am missing it now.

    Who should read Fractured Memories:
Anybody who does like multilayered fantasy worlds, dark fantasy, a plot which is not straight forward or philosophical questions about the nature of evil and society.
Anybody who enjoys the Wattpad book of Amber Dalcourt.

Who should not read Fractured Memories:
Anybody who needs romance in a book to enjoy it. Also if you don’t like changing main characters this book is not the best for you. And for those with more sensitive stomaches the blood and death in some of the stories might not be good.

PS: I got the book for free in advance but just bought it anyway to give it more support.
