Fall of the House of Ramesses, Book 2: Seti: A Novel of Ancient Egypt (Fall of the House of Ramesses, Ancient Egyptian Novels) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 77 ratings

Egypt was at the height of its powers in the days of Ramesses the Great, a young king who confidently predicted his House would last for a Thousand Years. Sixty years later, he was still on the throne. One by one, his heirs had died and the survivors had become old men. When Ramesses at last died, he left a stagnant kingdom and his throne to an old man--Merenptah. What followed laid the groundwork for a nation ripped apart by civil war.

After only nine years on the throne, Merenptah is dead and his son Seti is king in his place. He rules from the northern city of Men-nefer, while his elder brother Messuwy, convinced the throne is his by right, plots rebellion in the south. The kingdoms are tipped into bloody civil war, with brother fighting against brother for the throne of a united Egypt. On one side is Messuwy, now crowned as King Amenmesse and his ruthless General Sethi; on the other, young King Seti and his wife Tausret. But other men are weighing up the chances of wresting the throne from both brothers and becoming king in their place. Under the onslaught of conflict, the House of Ramesses begins to crumble...

Max is a published author of varying genres including historicals, a contemporary thriller, and a western.

He has lived all over the world, from Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to Townsville, Queensland, Australia; from Gerrard’s Cross in England to Kingston, Jamaica; from Düsseldorf in Germany to Wellington, New Zealand; from Antwerp in Belgium to Collinsville, Illinois, USA.

Max has a Master’s degree, with Honours, in Plant Physiology, and has worked as a university lecturer and demonstrator, a research scientist, a school teacher, a technician, a quotes officer for a microscopy supply house, an assistant manager at Walmart and Max has even caught bumblebees for a living.

Even though I enjoyed Book One more, I still felt this was an excellent book, and gave it 5 stars, as did my fellow readers.

Too much war and battle scenes described in horrific details for my taste, but that was the Civil War era of brother against brother for the throne. So despite my squeamishness, I found this to be an excellent war chronicle.

Since I am now on book 2, I am beginning to understand all the confusing names, and the different names for the same characters in this book.

I am now looking forward to picking up my Kindle, and starting Book 3-Tausret! Christine Schulz

5.0 out of 5 stars The last chapter in the story of the Ramessian legacy

The story continues with Seti taking control and the lengths taken to secure the throne leading to the final chapter in the story of Ramesses 11 and all the inter fighting between families who think they have more rights to rule than others.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very good story
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 19, 2015
As with the first book in the trilogy, the story is compelling, the characterisation is good and I found myself gripped. As with book 1, I found the pace was slowed and interrupted when the same scene was told from a couple of different characters' viewpoints. I could accept a few sentences to re-tell then pick up the action with the next character, but I found the re-telling of the same scene slowed things down too much. Probably only happened 2 or 3 times but enough to be a distraction. Another thing that prevents me giving 5 stars is the use of ancient terms for the gods and for upper and lower Egypt. I totally accept this is for authenticity. But the problem with reading on a Kindle rather than a paperback is it's not straightforward to flick back to the beginning and check the author's note for the explanation of the ancient vs Greek names. So, other than Heru, who I grasped was Horus, I struggled with the names of gods. I grasped that Waset was Thebes and Men-Nefer Memphis, but I'm sorry to say I'm not a good enough student of Egyptology to have remembered the others - so I found this annoying. A distraction in an otherwise very well written and believable tale.
