About the Author
Craig is a successful author, publishing regularly. He's on track to publish ten books in 2016. He's taken his more than twenty years of experience in the Marine Corps, his law degree, and his business consulting career to write believable characters living in a real world.
Although Craig has written in multiple genres, he believes that most important is that compelling characters are critical. Just like Star Trek, the original series used a back drop of space, but the themes related to modern day America.Life lessons of a great story can be applied now or fifty years in the future. Some things are universal.
Craig believes that evil exists. Some people are driven differently and cannot be allowed access to our world. Good people will rise to the occasion, whether it's before or after a crisis. Good will always challenge evil, but will it win in time?
Some writers who've influenced Craig? Robert E. Howard (the original Conan), JRR Tolkien, Andre Norton, Robert Heinlein, Lin Carter, Brian Aldiss, Margaret Weis, Tracy Hickman, Anne McCaffrey, and of late, James Axler, Raymond Weil, Jonathan Brazee, Mark E. Cooper, and David Weber. Craig learned something from each of these authors, story line, compelling issue, characters that you can relate to, beauty of prose, action, and unique tendrils weaving through the book's theme. Craig's prose has been compared to that of Andre Norton and his Free Trader characters to those of McCaffrey's Dragonriders, the Rick Banik Thrillers to the works of Robert Ludlum.
Through a bizarre series of events, Craig ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. He never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year.

About the author

Craig is a million-selling author of science fiction (post-apocalyptic, military sci-fi, and space opera), thrillers, and non-fiction.
Craig retired from the Marine Corps after a long career in the military intelligence community, having worked with most of the U.S. Government's three-letter agencies. After a short stint with physical security, Craig went to law school, graduated summa cum laude, and went into business consulting. From intelligence, to the inner workings of company board rooms, to on-the-ground leadership, Craig has seen it firsthand.
His books are an extension of his experience, putting the trials and tribulations of a fast-paced world into your hands. Whether in Science Fiction, Thrillers, Fantasy, or even his Non-Fiction, you'll find consistent themes of justice and doing right by those who are counting on their leaders. Leadership is a service, not a crown to lord over others.
No matter where Craig went, he always had a book with him. Thanks to 21st Century technology, He now has thousands of books at his fingertips and with him wherever he goes. How many books would he have read on deployments had he not had to carry a physical book?
No one is encumbered like that now. Craig loves the works of Robert Heinlein, Anne McCaffrey, Andre Norton, JRR Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, and so many more. He has been compared to Andre Norton and that is humbling - she was an incredible author with a huge list of novels to her credit. With every new book, Craig aspires to live up to those that you, the readers, have compared him to.
Through a bizarre series of events, Craig ended up in Fairbanks, Alaska. He never expected to retire to a place where golf courses are only open for four months out of the year. But that's the way it is. It is off the beaten path. He and his wife get to watch the northern lights from their driveway. Their dog has lots of room to run, just until temperatures reach fifty below zero. They have from three and a half hours of daylight in the winter to twenty-four hours in the summer.
It’s all part of the give and take of life. If they didn’t have those extremes, then everyone would live in the sub-arctic.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2022In this installment to the series we find the companions aboard the RV Traveler in space. Holly has repaired the transporter and the mission is successful until they find killer vines have taken over engineering. They have to get through them to make their way forward to the command center. Due to damage to some of the consoles the direct route is out and they must travel through the habitat rings, each one with it's own unique adaptations to the environment and some definitely more dangerous than others. When they finally do get forward, they find clones instead of humans and androids who have taken over the running of the ship. Then begins a power struggle for control of the ship in order to save the people on Cygnus VI. When the companions finally get back home, they find the war with the ancient Amazonians has escalated and the safety of all is at risk. It's action packed and fast paced, loved the story and can't wait to begin book four!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2018This is the third installment in this series. I think the first two were better and having reached the sixth installment, I think this is probably the weakest story line overall. The characters are likable and are consistent throughout the series. This installment does provide the back story as to how the civilization got to where it actually was at the beginning of the first book. The nice thing about this book is that it diversifies the cast of characters so you aren't just depending on a couple of main characters to move the plot line along. It is a fast, enjoyable read. Make sure you read the first two books first, or you probably won't fully understand what is going on.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2018This is the third book in Craig Martelle's "Free Trader" series. This series tells the story of Free Trader Braden and his journey to bring freedom and prosperity to Planet Vii.
Braden, Micah, G-War (hillcat) and Aadi (tortoid journey to the RV Traveller so that they can rescue the survivors of the science team who have been on Cygnus VI for four hundred years. The journey through the giant cryo-sleep ship which bought settlers to Cygnus VI and VII (Vii get it?) is fraught with perils. Martelle has let his imagination run riot in this book. The design of the ship is plausible and the challenges faced by the traders are well described and plausible in context.
This is a thrilling journey of the imagination. Martelle manages to make this engaging and a real emotional attention grabber. It's still a fairly quick read but that doesn't reduce the fun reading this book.
(Hill)cats rule and Androids suck!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2022Our heroes travel to the RV Traveler and find new friends and a lot more than expected. Craig Martelle once again takes us on a journey that is enlightening as well as frightening. All of this leads to another great read. Enjoy!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2020I enjoyed the adventure on the ship although they faced various types of danger once they arrived and attempting to get through the ship that hadn't been taken care of for so long.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2016I guess this was book three--I read the entire series start to finish because I couldn't get enough. I have been ruined. Since reading this series and Craig Martelle's follow-on series Cygnus Arising, I can't find anything else to read that is as exciting to read and as well written. I absolutely loved this book. Branden and his Hellcat are outstanding characters, as are the other characters which are introduced as the book and the series continues. The story line is riveting and original. Yet, as one reads this series, one continues to think of the writing style of Ann McCaffery, with a bit of Andre Norton thrown in. I believe any Science-fiction reader who has read and enjoyed these writers, will absolutely love this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2016Much the same problems as #1 and #2...simplistic plotting and characters. Seems geared to 12-15 year old worldview. Really lacks the complexity I prefer. Actually got tired of the ship battles, because it was hard to accept that young people that had not grown up with space ships/high tech would handle taking over the ship any better than the clones isolated on the ship who lacked regular living experience. Will not continue with the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2016In this book the companions end up on a ship in orbit between the two planets of VI and VII. They leave the trade in capable hands down below, pausing their lives to play hero..and become involved in political and physical altercations on the spaceship RV Traveler. Aboard there are conniving androids, good and evil mutants, new friends, and crazy plant life. Also kudos to Martelle for the character that is a reference to Red Dwarf. :D
I read before bed and it is hard for me to put this one down to go to sleep. I want to put off work to see what happens next. I never thought I'd be cheering on a trader like I am team Mic-en. Brad-Cia...go team free trader!?
