For Their Country's Good Box Set: Exiled to Van Diemen's Land for their country's good. Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 29 ratings

One illicit kiss changes Ella's life forever. One moment of madness changes Jem's. Jem, a young poacher is convicted of murdering one of Lord Northampton's gamekeepers and is exiled to Van Diemen's Land with his two cousins for life leaving behind Ella, his common-law wife. Ella, desperate to escape an abusive arranged marriage and determined her and Jem's unborn child will know its father, will do anything to follow the man she loves. Their ill-fated attempts to be together take them across the globe in convict ships to help found a new colony in Van Diemen's Land, across the Blue Mountains of Australia after gold, and force both to make heartbreaking decisions. A tale of sacrifice, courage, hope, and unbreakable love. 'Truly exceptional.' Warning: strong language, explicit sexual scenes.

Review

'I arrived at the end of this trilogy in the knowledge that the story and many of its characters would live on in my memory for a long time to come. For me this is the sign of a well-told tale.
In this third book we are treated to more wonderful characterisation and imagery, enabled from a foundation of solid research. Once again we find love, deceit, heartache, hardship, honour, and a host of other things which set this saga apart from other stories. Relationships and the development of character are central to the tale and we see people demonstrating the best and worst of humankind.
The journeys in which the characters are involved could have been skipped over with a few sentences, but in keeping with the earlier parts, we are invited into a world where nothing comes without effort and endurance, for the men, women, children, and animals.
I commend the author for the detail which is present throughout. Occasionally a phrase encompasses a fact related to the period, whether it be in the homeland or the penal colonies. Now and then, something of interest is slipped into a scene and holds the reader in the moment. Having an interest in natural history, I was impressed by the mention of the thylacine and the part played in the tale.
From the opening scenes of this wonderful story the circumstances and plight of women as a subordinate gender is explored, examined and explained in detail. Slavery was alive and well in Victorian times without having to look at the capture and exploitation of indigenous races.
This trilogy ranks in my top ten, and I've read a few stories.
Kudos, Rebecca Bryn.' Amazon review for
On Common Ground Book 3 in the For Their Country's Good trilogy

From the Author

For Their Country's Good was inspired by a family story about a poacher who killed a gamekeeper and was transported to Tasmania, or Van Diemen's Land as it then was. I didn't know if the story was true, so I did some digging and discovered that indeed it was. Not only was my g-g-g-uncle, Jem, convicted but so were his two cousins. From trial transcripts, newspaper articles, and convict records, I unravelled the facts of their fascinating story, and a story of life in Victorian England for the working-class family in the mid 1800s. I followed their journey to Van Diemen's Land via the ships' log, and the surgeon's log, and their stay in Van Diemen's Land through their convict records and births, marriages, and deaths records. I added a love interest, a story began to take shape, and the one book I'd intended grew roots, sent out branches, and flowered into three. I have loved every minute of Jem and Ella's tale and I hope you do as well. One day, I hope to be able to produce it as an audio book, and I think it would make a great TV drama series. I'd love to see it on-screen. If you enjoy my tale, please take a moment to leave a review. I love reading reviews.

Rebecca lives near Britain's smallest city, St Davids, in the far west of Wales. Surrounded by stunning coastal and moorland scenery, she also loves to paint. She inherited her love of stories from her grandfather, who told stories with his hands: stories with colourful characters and unexpected endings. Her fascination with what makes people who they are, and the belief that life is many shades of grey, informs her writing. A Native American Indian proverb reads, 'Don't judge a man until you have walked two moons in his moccasins.' Rebecca has based her life on this tenet: it is certainly core to her writing. 'We may not condone what a person does, but sometimes we can understand and maybe come to forgive.' In 2019, she won the IAN Fiction Book of the Year prize, the IAN Outstanding Historical Fiction prize, and the Readers' Favorite Gold Medal for Historical era/event Fiction.

Her books have been awarded Readers' Favorite 5-star reviews.

I love all Rebecca Bryn's books so, when On Different Shores was published, I read it, enjoyed it, and waited eagerly for the next installment of Jem and Ella's troubled romance... and waited, reading many other books. The boxed set is a real winner. The complete story in one from the first illicit kiss to Van Diemen's Land and beyond.

A fantastic set of books - very thought provoking - a lovely story intertwined with the history of the poor souls sent to Australia for often relatively small misdemeanours. This story had me so hooked into the lives of Jem, Ella et al that I had great difficulty putting the book down. A real tearjerker!

5.0 out of 5 stars A MAGNIFICENT READ.

What a magnificent read. If i could give each book five stars, i would.
Rebecca Bryn has definitely done her homework.
I just loved the characters, even though there were some not very likable at all. But each had their place where they were meant to be.
There were so many wrong doings in those bygone days, it brings tears to your eyes, but, it did happen, and too many to count for who were sent away on such terrible ships, and the inhuman treatment they were to suffer during those months living in such filth, and locked away most of the time was unbelievable.
This story has a lot of love, hate, revenge and broken hearts. The love and promise to Jem, from Ella, was never broken. Words can never explain how life will turn out when torn apart from love. This true story tells that you never know the paths you make and the challenges you go through but, most of all it gives you faith.
I was born in Hobart Tasmania from prisoners that suffered the same fate.
A big Congratulations to the author, Rebecca Bryn, who did a magnificent job on researching her ancestors, and life in the colonies, just as it was. Thank you.
I highly recommend this wonderful author.
