Fair Catch (Leighton U Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 3,171 ratings

Catching feelings was never part of the plan.

Taking in Kason Fuller as roommate is meant to be a favor;
one I regret immediately.
The bumbling, virgin football player drives me to the brink of sanity,
stealing my food, my sleep, my peace and solitude.
My solution? Call a ceasefire.
Get him out on dates and out of my hair.
Yet as our truce shifts,
I realize there’s a depth to this connection unlike any I’ve felt before.
It turns out, I don’t mind his presence.
I crave it, along with every morsel I learn about him.
But falling for the guy from the wrong side of the tracks wasn’t in the cards.
And I’m not the only one who thinks so.
Now, I’m at a crossroads between the life I thought I’d have,
or risking everything to catch him.

*Fair Catch is the third in a five book standalone college sports romance series featuring one extremely *frustrated* virgin, flirtatious roomie dates, and a not-so-sanitary use of butter that will have you clutching your pearls. Not suitable for anyone under 18 years of age.*

CE Ricci is a USA Today and international best-selling author who enjoys plenty of things in her free time, but writing about herself in the third person isn’t one of them. She believes home isn’t a place, but a feeling, and it’s one she gets when she’s chilling lakeside or on hiking trails with her dogs, camera in hand. She’s addicted to all things photography, plants, peaks, puppies, and paperbacks, though not necessarily in that order. Music is her love language, and traveling the country (and world) is the way she chooses to find most of her inspiration for whatever epic love story she will tell next!

Another angsty sport romance, stealing the hearts of many.
Any story of CE Ricci’s is a hit for me. I wondered how she’d manage to hook us & bring us in after the ending in Caught Stealing.. but alas, consider me hooked. There is nothing she writes better than angst & angry pining. Which she nailed perfectly with these two…insta-love isn’t a thing.. they stumble to their feet in a game of push and pull during the beginning, pushing them to finally find mutual ground in order to survive the year together, all appendages in tact. What blooms from there is a foundation for understanding, emotional connection and a shared love. There’s nothing I love more than watching two people perfect for one another, fall slowly into their inevitability. Kason and Hayes are beautiful together, another Ricci couple that landed in the recesses of my brain to stay. 💛

I loved that we got to see everyone from the first 2 books.
I loved the very sweet/perfect HEA that Kason deserved.
I loved that they actually communicated.
    I loved the low angst.
    I loved the banter.

Definitely a must read if you follow this series, but you really need to read the first 2 books first (it’s worth it!!!)

Definitely less spice than her other books (🌶️🌶️), but it was the right amount for this story.

No spoilers, but CE RICCI wrote the most perfect, emotional love scene in this one…you will know exactly which one I’m referring to when you read it.

Let's start by saying the book was beautiful. It was an easy read with no chapters feeling unnecessary and the plot didn't stray, It portrayed the struggle of collage life well and the stress of the future in a fair light. I fell in love with both characters (I do have more of a soft spot for Hayes) and I felt as though I knew the characters before I watched them fall in love and that is a big thing for me. In terms of the spice it was romance and sweet and the chemistry was as explosive as popcorn (if you know you know). I'm definitely not used to this light type of read but I was engaged throughout (like didn't put it down deal). I did not rate it five stars honestly just selfishly due to the spice (could have had more skipping out a lot on firsts and I wished I had had a little more angst but I will say that the drama in this book made sense, was not long winded and didn't drag on until I was eye-rolling. This is my first book by this author I am definitely going to read more of their books.

I’ve read all of the Leighton University books now, and this one is by far the best in the series. But, as much as I highly recommend this one, it shouldn’t be read as a stand alone book. I advise anyone reading this review to read the books in order. It just makes the book better.

I hate to write less than stellar reviews- I realize authors work their butts off and pour their hearts into their characters. But, I'm just really stunned to know this was written by the same author that made me fall in love in her "River of Rain" duet. I became a voracious reader of CE Ricci with that set of novels and it's hard for me to see even a glimpse of her here. The writing is incredibly different, and not as carefully done. I caught errors in grammar, basic editing that needs a second look, but that's not my issue with this novel. I want to preface this by saying that, in just a handful of books, I became an avid reader of CE Ricci and looked forward to every release. I'm still devastated that her "Enclave" "series" started and ended with a single book and never went any further. I just don't see the same level of writing here. I enjoyed the first 2 books of this Leighton U series much more than this one and my problems are a few. I wanted to like these characters but really had a hard time. With every "nice" thing Hayes does he says kind of awful things in his head. He's really a dick that I find it hard to relate to. I have a child on the autism spectrum so I can understand and relate to a variety of personality types- everyone is different. He's just not nice. And honestly, Kason doesn't seem like the same guy I liked in book 2. He comes across as a bit meh for me. Not nearly as strong a character as I'd thought. Strong enough to take a break from virtually his only friend, yet weak enough to have little confidence. Confident enough to play collegiate level sports, yet "weak" in his inter personal skills despite being a senior in school? Zero dating experience even though the atmosphere surrounding queer athletes in this series suggests that a lack of experience would be unlikely in my opinion. Love that he wanted sex to mean something, but I found it hard to believe that was likely for a collegiate athlete- gay or straight in this world. I love the ability to be out and unconcerned in this university, I just didn't find a corresponding reason for his continued virginity. (something we learn about in book 2 so not really a spoiler).

Anyway, I just found I didn't much like either. Kason also comes across as so fully self absorbed as to require roommates to sound proof their rooms, yet anxious to please? Doesn't make any sense. This kid would've been walking on eggshells to be unobtrusive. And all of Hayes' inner thinking was just mean, not funny. He just couldn't understand being a decent person for so long, despite the fact he obviously was. He doesn't like people, yet goes with no pleading on Kason's part, to football games and a party, etc... I don't know. So much just didn't track for me. I'll still be a dedicated reader of every book this author puts out- I'm already a fan. I just was underwhelmed here, sadly.

    Oh My!
    I love Kason and Hayes.

Queer collage romance, jock who is awkward and a nerd who is prickly and to the point.
These two have a hilarious meet cute/h@te, the back and forth with them was perfection. The amount of times I laughed out loud and was basically kicking my feet in excitement, just absolutely obsessed.

Kason is awkward and a total klutz. He doesn’t have the usual c0cky arrogance jocks have and it is refreshing.

Hayes is smart and so not a people person, he’s prickly and antisocial. D@mn that mouth, he is quick witted and always has a comment/comeback and is on fire in the bedroom.

I usually have one character I like better than the other, I usually love both but one stands out BUT not this time. Kason and Hayes both had my attention from the start and I loved reading both of them, I was absolutely obsessed with these two.

I loved the previous book, and I was really excited to read Kason's story and to dig deeper into his character, it was really thought to see his fall down with Phoenix but it was necessary for both of them even if that hurts.
Soooo now Kason is picking the pieces of his friendship and moving in with Hayes (Quinton's BFF, what a small world) and focusing on football, hopefully being drafted into the NFL. And what a chaos, since the beginning Hayes is scandalised by how much Kason is loud in the apartment, and when he barges into the bathroom while Kason is inside, it’s the last draw for both of them. Time to have some ground rules and to make sure that Kason spends the least time possible in the apartment, and his best idea is to help him go on dates.

However, Hayes would have never thought that he would develop feelings for Kason which led to feeling attraction for him, and possessiveness and jealousy when one of the dates is going well.

I really loved the shift in the dynamic between the two, Kason is really cute, sometimes innocent and naive, other times not. But even if it pains him, he would not let Hayes lose everything he worked for. It was a marvellous story and I cannot wait for the next one.

I just simply adored Kason and Hayes so much, their relationship was portrayed in such a realistic and simplistic matter that it felt so real, you felt like you were living through them and their love felt real and natural.

I really did love the story line so much it put me in all my feels (as Chelsea always dose and this beauty was no different) and I just loved the way the progression was made with them starting with like having almost this cute rivalry to actually forming a friendship to romantic relationship. I just adored the natural progression so much, it felt real and that kept you in the story better.

I loved Hayes’ character so much I feel like I haven’t related to a character that much in such a long time he was just so enjoyable to read! And Kason oh how I love him he’s just simply such a cute character and his growth from Caught Stealing is beautiful to watch and I loved that he truly wanted to work on himself for himself, both of the boys just had such lovely interactions with each other and as their relationship progressed, them as people progressed and I just loved reading how they both made each other better people.

Even down to the conflict in this book I think was written is such a realistic manner even to the point of when you were annoyed by what one of the characters was doing you understood and accepted why he was doing it. It just really keeps you in the story and made it more.

I won’t go on and on because trust me I could and have been but I loved it In the simplest manner it was everything I was expecting from Kason’s sorry and so much more that I didn’t even know I needed and truly adored

Well, these two got me. Hayes and Kason's story grabbed my heart and didn’t let go. I cried, I laughed, I got angry—I felt every single emotion in this book. C.E. Ricci has such a powerful way of writing that it felt like I was in the story, living it with them. And honestly? I don’t want to leave.

I’m struggling to find the words to do this book justice without simply repeating “I LOVE IT” a hundred times—but it really is that good. The emotional connection Hayes so desperately needs—and finally gets—is written with such raw beauty, it left me breathless. And the love and support that Kason receives? It’s exactly what he deserves, and watching him get it was just amazing.

Hayes and Kason are absolutely perfect for each other. Their journey is messy, passionate, healing, and full of heart. If you’re looking for a story that pulls you in and refuses to let go, this is it. Fair Catch isn’t just a romance—it’s a rollercoaster of real emotions, second chances, and soul-deep love.
