About the author

Carmen has spent most of her life with ink on her fingers and a dangerously high pile of books and newspapers by her side.
She has worked as a newspaper reporter on two continents and always dreamt of becoming a novelist and screenwriter.
When she found herself crouched under her dining table, typing away on a novel between two earthquakes in Christchurch, New Zealand, she realised she was hooked for life.
The shaken but stirring novel made it to the longlist of the Mslexia competition, and her next book and first mystery, The Case Of The Missing Bride, was a finalist in the Malice Domestic competition in a year without a winner. Since then she has penned several more cozy mysteries, including the Jack and Frances series set in the 1930s.
Carmen now lives in Italy with her human and her four-legged family.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2023It's in the 1930's after WW1 in Australia. Captain Jack is remodeling a big house into a club. One of his first decisions is to have a charity evening on opening night to raise money for all the veterans who are down and out or injured without pensions or medical help. That included help for all the nurses that were injured and didn't get help from the government after the war. First he has to convince the powers that be that he is legitimate and the money gathered will be used properly and second he has to protect his place from card sharks and gangsters. Give this interesting book a read, you'll enjoy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2023Seems like a good set up for a series, had a couple of editing errors. But if you want folks outside of Australia to read your books -- include a list of Aussie slang and meanings. I've read a lot of Aussie books but I have got to say, I never heard the term Bluey for a redhead and I am one but in the US.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2024The Great War is over but Australia is full of men and women that survived the war but are just barely able to live a decent life. Captain Jack still feels the need to take care of his men so he organizes a benefit dance at his soon to ppen night club. It brings relief from suffering and sets the stage for a great series of good reads.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2023I loved this short story about Jack who is opening a club during prohibition. He is having a party to benefit the soldiers who did not get a pension and the nurses who were there helping the wounded. Prizes are given to the winners of the raffle but drama happens and Jack is there to prevent any problems. I enjoyed this story and would recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2020Quick read fun story that introduces Jack and gives the backstory to his nightclub and a few of the people who help him. I love how sharp Jack is and how loyal he is to his people and how loyal they are to him. Perfect quick read.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2019Though bare bones (36 pgs), you get enough character development to make it an interesting story. It isn't a "who-done-it" but more "how-they-solve-it" with only a couple typos that don't affect the flow. I'd read more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely!
A lovely little christmassy treat for any Frances and Jack fans - or anyone who loves the swinging twenties, charming characters and the bad guys getting their come-uppance!
I love Jack and can’t wait for a full length sequel to A Matter Of Love and Death - but for now it was brilliant to meet him again in this story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice read
Nicely written short story with veterans, thieves and Xmas party. What one ex-soldier can do to help veterans in need? How to catch pair of thieves without informing police? Read this story to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for a quick read. Captain Jack sounds dreamy!
What a great short cosy crime read by the very lovely Carmen Radtke.
Captain Jack sounds like a great character, the sort of person that we all need as a friend in our lives, watching our backs.
Liked the era very much, not one I know at all, so I am looking forward to reading more about this enigmatic gentleman
