4.4 out of 5 stars 1,005 ratings

How do you save a family from slaughter, when you don't know who or where they are - and you're not allowed to find out?

"An outstanding, attention grabbing, mind bending mental read." - Verified Amazon Purchaser

In war-torn eastern Europe, The Monster of Yereven has escaped the asylum and is heading to England's shore's for his long-planned, Family Reunion. It won’t be a joyous affair. During his years in solitary, the country's worst ever mass-murderer has had plenty of time to plot his vengeance against the family that surrendered him to the authorities before fleeing for a new life elsewhere.

Still haunted by past events, Detective Jamie Carver’s task is to find The Monster's family before he does. Two problems. One, no one knows who they are. Two, he’s barred from operational duties. But when a trail of bodies points to the killer closing on his prey, Carver has no choice but to do what he did once before - go rogue, even if it risks destroying everything he holds dear; his job, his relationship with the beautiful Rosanna - maybe even his very life!

Family Reunion is a race-against-time thriller in which Jamie Carver must break through the wall of silence surrounding the illegal-immigrant community in order to save a family who don't even know they need saving. But can he succeed against an adversary as cunning and warped as any he has faced before, and who always seems one step ahead?

Born in Liverpool, England, Robert F Barker served thirty years as a police officer and detective, most of it working in and around some of Northwest UK's grittiest towns and cities. He writes stories that are dark and edgy, but credible enough for the reader to believe they may be based on some sort of reality, which of course they sometimes are. (Names changed to protect the innocent.. etc.). During his service, he learned that no matter where people live, whatever their position in society, they are never far from places where darkness dwells. Those places may be inner city sink estates where drugs are dealt and violence rules, or leafy suburbs where neat gardens and lace curtains conceal the sort of evil that no one ever imagines - until the worst happens.

As a former Senior Investigating Officer and Firearms Incident Commander, he knows all about the pressures police officers face, as well as what it means to have to make life-and-death decisions in the heat of live operations. Given his background, his stories are as authentic a portrayal of crime and policing as can be found anywhere in today's crime fiction.

He splits his writing-time between his family home in Cheshire, UK, and the beautiful island of Cyprus, where he gains inspiration for a series of Cyprus-based thrillers which he intends will compliment his crime novels.

Jamie Carved is looking again for a serial killer. It is best to read previous books first since this book starts out referring back to other characters. Hard to get jest of this book until in several chapters.

Haunted by events from his past, and hobbled by a boss who doesn’t like him much and possibly wants him to fail, DCI Jamie Carver is trying to keep his head down, do his job, and maintain some sort of a home life when he gets sucked into yet another savage murder investigation.

The case is complicated, involving members of the immigrant community who are reluctant to go to the police. Carver knows something is going to happen, he just doesn’t know to whom or when, and his annoying boss won’t let him work the case. That doesn’t stop him from investigating, it just gives him more stress while he’s doing it because he is all about righting wrongs, even if it costs him personally.

Minuses: I am getting a little tired of Carver having to yet again face his “Red John.” (“Red John” was a character in the TV series “The Mentalist” who plagued the central character for the whole show. I thought the stories and characters were interesting enough without continually putting my favorite characters in needless jeopardy.) OK, Carver’s Red John is a stunningly beautiful female serial killer, which is kind of intriguing and non-stereotypical, but I was glad to see what I thought was the last of her in book 3. No spoilers here, but I think she’s making a come back in book 5. I think this series could survive quite nicely without the Red John – Carver and the supporting characters are interesting enough, and the crimes themselves carry enough tension to keep me riveted without putting someone I have grown quite fond of into needless peril.

Pluses: Carver, his team, the settings, the main plot, the secondary characters, the dialogue, the tension-filled, explosive plotlines. There is much to like about Carver, including his total dedication to the law, saving those who need saving, and doing the next right thing, whether it costs him personally or not. This series is dark, gritty, and graphic. The author does a great job of communicating the realistic trials and tribulations and office politics for a police force, and still makes the characters very human and relatable. I will keep reading, but possibly have one foot out the door if the Red John thing becomes a permanent fixture.

I found this very hard to read. I just couldn't get into it. It was very slow and kind of boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family Reunion another enjoyable read in the Jamie Carver series.

I really enjoyed the Worshipper Trilogy and this was equally as good. The twists and turns were there again right up to the end. The characters and their personal lives are interesting still showing strains from the previous case in books one to three. This can be read as a stand alone but it’s certainly worth reading the previous three books to give a background of Jamie and Jess’s characters and personal lives and the lengths they went to get the serial killer in the end. All in all another great read from Robert. I am now reading book 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story, characters, excellent twists&turns. I'm surprised it hasn't been turned into a series.

Fourth in a series but you can read each as a standalone. Each one is better than the one before. Not your typical police procedural but one with police officers not always following policy exactly and not all getting along famously. Great plot and storyline and some of the same characters acting badly. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I stumbled on this author whilst looking for another. I’m so glad I did. The stories are so well crafted with an attention to detail that brings the characters to life. The plots and sub plots are presented in a way that enhances the reading experience that results in a book that I just couldn’t put down.
At times I found myself reading very fast just because I was desperate to know what happened next!
This is the fourth book in the series and each subsequent book just got better.
