- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2022Edited review: I received my replacement copy and I also heard back directly from the author. The printing error was a mistake on Amazon‘s part and the replacement copy that I received was printed correctly. It is indeed a beautiful story, wonderfully illustrated, and perfect for every family. I especially love the inclusive nature of the language used throughout the book. I can’t wait to share it with my preschoolers!
This looks like a wonderful book…if only I receive the whole thing! The copy I received has the correct cover and then more than half of it from the beginning on is a Christmas music book! I would love to have the book I purchased but am wary of buying another copy for fear of this happening again since I see from other reviews that this is not the first time this happened. Sad because the pages that I can see at the end of this copy look perfect for my preschool students. I’ll be returning this defective copy to Amazon. 😥

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2024The single thing I would suggest for this book is coming in a more sturdy package as it is easily bendable given it is a paperback book.
Otherwise, this was exactly the type of gift I was looking for when finding Christmas gifts for my nephews who are 7 and 10. I wanted a book that exposed them to different family dynamics while emphasizing the value of caring for each other. I enjoyed the variety of families represented in the book. There were a few with disabilities too! Wheelchair and cochlear implant.
If there were to maybe be a second addition, I would love to see characters using sign language too! I think that would be a lovely addition. Overall I loved this and my sister loved it for my nephews.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2021This is an adorable book celebrating families no matter what they look like. It is a beautifully illustrated, simply written book that let’s people see themselves in the story. The book is not overt spelling out the differences but let’s them shine in illustration. It is so important that kids who notice they are a little different from those around them learn that it is okay and they are still great! And for those not used to seeing people who are different, it is important that they see it is great too. Family is family and this book shows that perfectly.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2023This book beautifully lists what it means to be a family. It shows what family does together and for each other.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2021I just read this with my seven year old son.
The illustrations are amazing, colorful and fun, they represent families of all kinds! If you’re looking for a book to teach your children, classroom or story time group about different types of families and what family means, then I highly recommend this book.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021The simple wording in this book is perfect for reading to younger children and perfect for those beginning to read on their own. The text serves as a great starting point for discussing the wonderful, colorful pictures that depict all sorts of families, not just white, mom and pop families. Both my 3 year old and 7 year old grands enjoyed this book - as they also enjoy the other books we read by Matthew Ralph. We read this on an iPad and the format works well.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 2, 2022i'm very happy with this book. i want my kids to see what families can look like and be exposed to all the different people, relationships, religions, races, etc. in the world. it's not a hard read. it's cute and has nice illustrations. i read it to my 2 1/2 year old and he sat through it with no trouble and we pointed out different things on the pages. it's the first "mainstream" "get with the times" kids book i've purchased and i'm very happy with it. it's not trying too hard or super extreme which i like.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2022Ok so it's a fine book and there's nothing bad in it, but it doesn't really cover what the description says it will. Basically each page just says "Family means..." and something like "sharing meals", "saying sorry", "spending time together", etc. and then there a pic of a family doing that thing. The families in the pictures are indeed very diverse which is nice but nothing in the book actually talks about the different types of families. I was looking more for something like "some families have 2 mommies" or "some families have adopted kids" etc. which the description says it will talk about but doesn't. We will keep and read it but now I'm back to looking for the type of book I wanted this to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book and diverse
We downloaded the kindle version of this book, it’s a lovely illustrated book about families, diverse families and what family means. My little one really enjoyed the illustrations and pointing out the small details.
It’s very well written, not too long nor too short. I love the different families and at the end of the book is a lovely area for children to add their own what family means to them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely words and excellent illustrations on the values of a family for the young minds ...
Matthew has approached the Family concept strategically and graphically and with an open-ended question "Family Means" for his new book. There's a family in his book that resonates with yours, but there's more ... His teachings to the kids about a family are the values and the goodness that run in a family: love, kindness and harmony amidst diversity by accepting family members as who they are. With these core values, saying and doing the right thing will flow out naturally. Let's extend this value beyond the family. So love your neighbour as you love yourself and your family members. And do unto others as you would have them do unto you. A great idea by Matthew for a good children's book, lovely words and excellent illustrations ... all executed beautifully after his extensive reader research. 👍

5.0 out of 5 stars Colourful and Engaging With A Lovely Message
Lovely book for children about family values. The illustrations are engaging and colourful. We like seeing the different cultures which my daughter always finds interesting. I think this book would appeal to quite an age range. Firstly for mums to read to very young children but also later when the children can read the book themselves I am sure this will remain a favourite. Sweet and thoughtful message throughout the book and never was there a more appropriate time for children to understand the importance of family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Family means love
A wonderful book by Matt Ralph that shows that at the end of the day, family means love.
I love the different races, genders, disabilities, ages and family mixes that this diverse book brings to life. My granddaughter loved it and asked lots of questions about the family set ups too, and thought the illustrations were “super cute”.
