Thorne was born in Luton and graduated from Aberystwyth University (history) and from the Open University (Law). She set up a restaurant with her sister and made miniature furniture for collectors. She lives in Pembrokeshire, which forms a background for much of her writing, as does Luton.

She writes psychological mysteries, or "domestic noir," exploring the reason for crimes and their consequences, rather than the details of the crimes themselves. and her first novel, "A Time For Silence," was published by Honno in 2012, with its prequel, "The Covenant," published in 2020. "Motherlove" and "The Unravelling" were also published by Honno. "Shadows" is set in an old mansion in Pembrokeshire and is paired with "Long Shadows," which explains the history and mysteries of the same old house. Her latest crime novels, "Fatal Collision" and "Bethulia" are published by Diamond Crime. She's a member of Crime Cymru.

She has also written the Science Fiction trilogy "Salvage," including "Inside Out," "Making Waves" and "By The Book" as well as a collection of short stories, "Moments of Consequence."

If you wanted to write a solid by-the-tropes psychological thriller, Fatal Collision could be your textbook. It begins slowly, with recently widowed artist Nicki and her daughter Willow fleeing to the Pembrokeshire coast of south-west Wales to escape the stalker who lurks outside their home, leaving threatening notes and graffiti.

Arriving in a swirl of mist and shadows, the seacoast soon becomes a character itself, providing the two grieving women with sunlight and color, and rekindling Nicki’s artistic vision.

QUOTE: "The last of the mist disintegrated before my eyes … and where one illusion had bewitched me, another burst out in its place: the sea, under a cobalt sky, a dazzling expanse of ultramarine, sparkling and flashing with the light of a million suns and moons and stars. The light of a limitless universe, folding around me."

But even as Nicki and Willow become more integrated with their new neighbors and surroundings, including a wealthy and attractive father and son, they encounter disturbing stories about missing women, and realize that something is very wrong.

Nicki begins to investigate out of concern for her new friends and for her daughter. In most thrillers, the detective will be aided by a sidekick. For Nicki, that role is filled by the voice in her head of her dead husband Adam. Like many couples who’ve been together for a long period, she knows what Adam would have told her, and lets herself hear that. Instead of becoming a crutch, this inner voice lets her recover her own artistic voice and agency, giving her the support she had depended on when Adam was alive. But it also provides companionship, someone to joke and even argue with.

The pace and setting of Fatal Collision are perfect complements to the thriller action. As Nicki uncovers the various plots, the pace increases until danger, violence, and discovery race together, while the setting contributes to the perfect remote, rugged atmosphere.

My only complaints are minor. I wasn’t altogether convinced that the killer—a psychopath capable of meticulous planning and control—would actually have risked everything to commit the crimes for the reasons given, and I was equally unconvinced by the lack of any apparent relationship between husband Adam’s fatal collision of the title, and the deaths Nicki is investigating. Overall though, Fatal Collision is a terrific example of a classic thriller. It’s fast-paced, involves a truly evil villain, and offers a brilliant mix of action, limited violence, and suspense.

5.0 out of 5 stars No peace in Pembrokeshire
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 10, 2022
Ever since reading A Time for Silence I’ve been interested in Thorne Moore’s work. She never fails to surprise and this latest crime novel is no exception.

When Nicki Winters’ husband is killed in a road accident right outside her door an escape to a peaceful place in Pembrokeshire seems a good idea. At her London home a stalker is making her life unbearable and she needs to prepare for an exhibition. She’s an artist and somewhat fanciful, imagining her husband’s voice at times, grief affecting her sensibilities.
Nicki soon becomes intrigued by a mystery. The local owner of a mansion and very rich Oliver Wyatt, seems to be hiding something. His wife has left and no one knows if she’s alive, including Oliver’s son. A young woman, reported to be pregnant has also disappeared and there’s a link to the Wyatt family.
She finds herself drawn into Oliver’s web, both repelled and intrigued by the family and determined to find out what has happened to the missing girl.
The reader is taken down one path after another, unsure where the story is going to end. Danger, both real and imagined, keeps the pages turning.
Some of the description is quite beautiful and evocative and the characters are very real and rounded people. The reader is drawn into Nicki’s world. We are anxious for her mental and physical welfare as she doggedly pursues each clue, at times alienating the locals, despite her desire to be helpful.
Uncovering the mystery could lead to her death and the ending is full of suspense.
Prepare to be sitting at the edge of your seat as the story comes to a close. An enjoyable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, fast and very well written

Brilliant. What better way to heal from trauma than a trip to the Welsh coast? Idyllic, remote, slightly behind the times and very characterful. Well, ok, it’s not all ice-creams and boat trips! Not in this crime-thriller! A lot of it’s set in this very small village and its surroundings, that I can imagine vividly – heaving with tourists in the summer, quiet and almost eerie in the winter (except for the crashing waves!). But there’s so much going on behind the scenes (won’t say more! No spoilers!). I love the array of characters – all very distinctive and often chillingly realistic (though not always predictable!). Some I’d love to meet (Harry) and some I’d love to give a piece of my mind to (Fabia…). And as a bonus, I loved the descriptions on the coastline – I could really imagine Pembrokeshire (in rain or shine) and now long to go back there! (Though I hope I don’t find that much drama!). Excellent read – great characters, great pace and a fun plot that keeps you guessing.

Best dining room in the world, said Adam, brushing Dorset sand off a hard-boiled egg!

I know Pembrokeshire well but felt more like Devon or Cornwall (or Devon)! from the start

really having a one night stand so soon after her husbands death, so soon!! not much grief or respect there

Nicki and her daughter Willow arrive in the Tregelli to come to terms with a death and to escape a stalker, but some inhabitants of the beautiful Pembrokeshire village are guarding their own secrets.
I've yet to read a book by Thorne Moore I didn't like, and Fatal Collison is no exception. In its tackling of grief, compassion and mystery, the story weaves a gripping yet very real narrative. As usual, Thorne Moore's writing is laced with darkly comic observations, but Nicki's pain and sense of loss feel very real. Characters and relationships are tightly drawn and the denouement is genuinely exciting.
    Highly recommended!
