But then the hotel’s new owner, Patrick Cross, takes Felicity for the replacement barmaid, and things don’t turn out quite to plan. With a grumpy chef, a waiter with love troubles, and the old Tudor building in need of renovation, Felicity’s quiet break soon turns into a working holiday.
Before long, Felicity is beginning to fall in love with the hotel…as well as her new boss.
But Patrick’s dreams lie beyond the mountains, and Felicity’s loyalties lie with her family, and anyway, holidays can’t last forever...can they?

- Reviewed in the United States on August 11, 2017*This review is being written under my husband's account as that is how my Kindle is linked. Unfortunately, he does not read sweet, contemporary romance. Fortunately, he is a sweet, contemporary romantic.*
From the first page, I was drawn into the atypical life of Felicity (known as Fliss) Everdene. As a glob-trotting executive for her family's hotel empire, one would think Fliss would be a spoiled rich girl. Instead, she is down-to-earth and unafraid of hard work. This comes in handy when she sets out to help a family friend. Jilly Cross, the friend, is struggling to save her family's small hotel in the beautiful Lake District. No big chain here, the Cross Hotel is facing failure if Fliss can't help turn it around. Unfortunately, Jilly's son Patrick seems bent on rejecting Fliss's help.
Between staffing issues, Patrick's grumpiness, and those dreaded puce curtains, can Fliss work the miracle needed at the Cross Hotel? I thoroughly enjoyed following along on Fliss's adventures, and look forward to more from Ms. Fairfax!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2017It was at the end of an exhausting day when I picked up FELICITY AT THE CROSS HOTEL by Helena Fairfax and it was exactly what I needed. Refreshing, with wonderful characters that I felt connected to immediately, and the stunning Lake District as the backdrop were just some of the reasons why this story really worked for me.
Felicity or Fliss Everdene works for the extremely successful family business of the Everdene International Hotel Chain but sometimes everyone needs a change of scene. So when she gets the chance to help at The Cross Hotel in the Lake District, it is the perfect trip for her.
Patrick Cross never thought he would return to the little village where he grew up but when his father leaves him the family hotel after his death, Patrick finds himself thrust back into the village limelight. And when he meets Fliss, she is the last thing he needs. But sometimes life gives us what we need when we least expect it...
I loved Fliss as she was quirky, loving, and chatty (which I can totally relate too!LOL), the complete opposite to Patrick who is brooding, serious, and contemplative. But as they clash we can see that there is something there between them and I desperately wanted to bang their heads together and open their eyes. The hotel and its staff provide even more entertainment and altogether the story just really worked for me.
FELICITY AT CROSS HOTEL by Helena Fairfax is a heartwarming romance but it also an emotional story about family dynamics, loss, guilt, and the prospect of new beginnings. This book is the perfect read to relax with and you will enjoy being transported to the beauty of the Lake District.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2017The book cover is correct. This IS a truly a "feel good uplifting romance" but not just for the summer. This delightful story by Ms. Fairfax will brighten your day any time of the year. Felicity is not such a Pollyanna you tire of her character. Instead the author balances her light-hearted joyful personality with problems that could ruin anyone's day, even Felicity. The story's setting is a small hotel in the Lake District in England. I've only seen pictures, but it must be an area with beautiful landscapes and a romantic place to visit. After reading this book, I am adding a visit to the Lake District on my bucket list. Ms. Fairfax' way with words draws you right into the book and makes you care about the characters. At times I was so wrapped up in the story, I actually wanted to yell out some advice to them, especially Patrick Cross, a tortured soul. I would recommend this book to those who love romantic stories.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2017Felicity is one of my favorite of all heroines. She's so delightfully spunky. The dialogue in Fairfax's book just sparkles. Her descriptions draw you into the scene & it's a lovely place. This book deserves to be on your TBR stack. Know you will enjoy the read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2017I enjoyed reading about Fliss and Patrick. This was such an uplifting story. I really hated too see it end, but it turned out just as I hoped.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2017Felicity At The Cross Hotel is a contemporary romance set in the English Lake District. Fliss Everdene is taking time away from her job to help her mother’s friend. Jilly Cross has recently lost her husband and the family hotel is rundown; it has serious debts, few customers and unhappy staff. Jilly’s son Patrick has returned from the Caribbean, but doesn’t want to take on the business; this is breaking his mother’s heart.
The effervescent Fliss brings happiness and a new lease of life to Jilly's world. Used to being Operations Manager for her father’s chain of hotels, she’s wary when asked to run the bar. However, she quickly settles in and has plenty of suggestions about how they can turn the ailing business around. But at the back of everyone’s mind hovers the question: is she working undercover with a plan for The Cross to be the next acquisition for the Everdene chain?
I enjoyed reading about the setting for this book, The Lake District is a place on my bucket list of travels. This book also reminded me of The Hotel Inspector, a TV reality show which I enjoy watching, so two big thumbs up from me. The author writes with a smooth, engaging style which is very comparable to other popular authors in the genre. The romance is predictable, but what readers want from this type of escapism read. What matters is the details of the story arc and how the characters interact to get to the conclusion. I must also mention some well-written secondary characters; I particularly liked Johnny.
I can recommend this book to those who have a softness to see a hotel transformed from rags to riches with the promise of romance, all in a delightful English setting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Feelgood romance
There are many things in this world I like and last tie I was on holiday, several of them came together. First up, some sun. Second, a contemporary romance by Helena Fairfax. And thirdly, that romance was set in one of my favourite places in the world, the English Lakes.
Helena never lets me down. Her novels are gentle but thoughtful, feel-good but not fluffy. Her characters are engaging and well-drawn, their dilemmas real. When Felicity Everdene, heiress to her family’s hotel chain, finds herself at the Cross Hotel on a short holiday, there’s speculation that Everdene Hotels are moving on for the kill on the ailing family business. But all isn’t what it seems: Patrick, the hotel’s owner, is dogged by personal tragedy and Felicity herself has to confront the differences within her own family.
With its gorgeous descriptions of the Lakes and its sensitive characterisation, Felicity at the Cross Hotel is a fabulous read.

4.0 out of 5 stars strong sense of place
Felicity at the Cross Hotel is set amidst the spectacular scenery of the Lake District. Patrick Cross has come home to the hotel he has inherited following the sudden death of his father, and is finding the transition very difficult. He was running a diving school in Dominica, so you can understand why. Felicity (Fliss) Everdene is taking some time away from her high-powered job to help out at the Cross Hotel (her mother and Patrick’s are old friends).
To begin with, Patrick is suspicious of Fliss; is she working undercover to acquire the hotel for her father? As a globe-trotting executive for her family’s international hotel chain, you could be forgiven for assuming she would be a spoiled little rich girl. However, despite her background, Fliss is down to earth, gets on with people and is not afraid of getting her hands dirty, so she soon wins everyone over.
Without giving too much away, Patrick left the country following a traumatic incident in his youth that he now has to face up to, and come to terms with, so that he can move on with his life. Helena Fairfax handles this with great sensitivity, and Patrick grows as a character because he confronts his grief and guilt.
The love story between Fliss and Patrick is beautifully developed with just enough obstacles to keep the reader guessing right up to the end. I love the symmetry of beginning and ending the book in exactly the same location.
The characters are believable and relatable, the dialogue authentic, and the author has put her finger on the pros and cons of living in such an isolated location; everyone knows your business, but everyone looks out for each other too.
Told from the alternate viewpoints of Fliss and Patrick, Felicity at the Cross Hotel is a well-written and heart-warming story with a strong sense of place and an eye-catching cover. I thoroughly recommend that you give it a try, and hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for other titles by Helena Fairfax.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely romance in a stunning setting!
I love going to the Lake District and when I was reading Helena Fairfax's romantic novel I could picture its beautiful sceneries as if I was there - the lakes and the fells, the villages, the ever changing light and weather. Helena Fairfax has written a lovely romance between two very different characters. I loved Felicity Everdene, an endearing heroine whose personality fits her name perfectly, and who is determined to bring happiness and a smile where ever she goes. Will she succeed with taciturn Patrick Cross, a man tormented with guilt and the memory of tragic events? You'll have to read the novel to find out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real feel good tale with beautiful scenery.
I adore the books of this author, you are simply immersed so deep within the story it is almost as if you are there experiencing the scenery for yourself. 'Felicity at the Cross Hotel' is no exception with its beautiful images from the Lake District. One minute stormy and sullen (as some of the characters) the next bright and warm as Fliss the main character. A young women you simply cannot stop yourself from warming to.
A real feel good tale.
