Tomato, Fig & Pumpkin Jelly: A year to write home about too - Wedding bells in Galicia (Writing Home Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 285 ratings

“D’you think we should just get married then?” asked S, apropos of nothing, over the breakfast table one morning.
For two people struggling to understand a foreign language in a remote part of Northwest Spain, Lisa and her partner, the enigmatic S, are not making life easy for themselves.

With a partly renovated but still mainly derelict house, an allotment which is proving too big to handle and some very bad experiences with Spanish paperwork to look back on the last thing they need is to try and negotiate their way around a Spanish wedding – isn’t it?

Have you ever wanted to leave the rat race, move abroad and live the good life somewhere green and bountiful?
In 2007 Lisa and her partner, the enigmatic S, left their jobs as newt catchers, and their native English shores, for beautiful green Galicia, in the remote northwest of Spain – a place of mystery and mists, Celtic legends and bagpipes, and a language of its very own. There, they set to work to self-renovate a derelict farmhouse, whilst trying to become self-sufficient and learn more about this untamed part of the Iberian peninsula.
“We first saw
A Casa do Campo on a rainswept November morning. Mists were rising and water dripped onto the rusted kitchen range from gaping holes in the roof. There were birds’ nests in the bedrooms and bats in the hallway. Bare, dead looking trees surrounded the property which the Spanish estate agent enthusiastically promised us would be laden with fruit come August. It was love at first sight.”
Plum, Courgette & Green Bean Tart told the story of that first 12 months living la vida dulce, The Good Life, in this beautiful green part of mainland Spain, Galicia or Galiza in its own language.
Now a year has passed since the events in
Plum. Lisa and S have started to create a real home for themselves in this wild land. They have forged friendships and battled bureaucracy (and won… mainly). A Casa do Campo is no longer quite the bat infested ruin it was. They even have hot running water (gasp in astonishment please), but do they have windows? And whose idea is it to try and arrange a marriage in Galicia?
This fly on the wall account once more uses genuine letters home and diary entries to tell a true story: a story of more battles with Spanish bureaucracy and of travels around this most beautiful of areas. It tells of continuing struggles with self-renovating a stone ruin, defeating would be chicken assassins and the erratic Galician weather. Oh, and of getting married… maybe!
Tomato, Fig & Pumpkin Jelly, Book Two of the ‘writing home’ series, has an immediacy which has you falling under its spell. Twelve more chapters tell a story of twelve more months, of four more seasons, of another whole year to write home about. There are more genuine Galician recipes including a tomato, fig & pumpkin jelly to make (that was a tricky one!), and a free photo album to follow as the story unfolds. The interwoven information and anecdotes about Galicia are told by someone who has truly fallen in love with this little known and timeless green region with its gentle people and erratic weather, ensuring this will truly be a book to write home about too.

Praise for Tomato, Fig & Pumpkin Jelly

"It’s a gorgeous mix, bound by Lisa’s vivacious personality, which bounces off every page. I loved it; hers is the life I would so love to live and it was wonderful to immerse myself in her world with S for a while. All in all, this is a charming book that will leave you dreaming of going to Galicia and living there in a ramshackle house with lots of chickens. Just a delight altogether."

A year to write home about too

Dear Mum,

We had our banns back from Vigo yesterday. Poor postie turned up through all the snow. I had to laugh when you asked on Saturday. As if we would get married without you!

We have both stoves going. The new stove is taking the edge off in the hallway but unfortunately the instructions specifically say you have to run it gently for 20 days. Think we may get fed up well before that.

Love you tons and tons xxx

PS Was I supposed to say ‘yes’? What should the question have been?!

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

In 2007 Lisa left a promising career as an ecologist catching protected reptiles and amphibians, and kissing frogs, to move to beautiful green Galicia in the remote northwest of Spain with her blue-eyed prince (who has since become her blue-eyed husband but that’s another story).

She divides her time equally between growing her own food, helping to renovate a semi-derelict house (or actually two… but that’s another story too) and getting out and about to discover more of the stunningly beautiful area she calls home.

Lisa is happiest outside in her huerta weeding, watching the antics of her chickens, in her kitchen cooking interesting recipes on her wood-burning range, or getting out to discover more of the world around us.

Lisa is the author of six travelogue memoirs.

The Writing Home trilogy, told through letters home to Lisa’s mum, is the story of her adventures moving to beautiful green Galicia, beginning with their first year renovating a 200-year-old stone ruin in Plum, Courgette & Green Bean Tart. A year later, in Tomato, Fig & Pumpkin Jelly, Lisa and her blue-eyed prince get married – eventually. And in Chestnut, Cherry & Kiwi Fruit Sponge, the intrepid pair renovate a second ruin, this time for Lisa's mum who moves to Galicia aged 83 and three-quarters.

In the Travels Around series, Lisa invites her readers to visit her beautiful green Galicia in Pulpo, Pig & Peppers – travels around Galicia, and to follow her and hubby S, around the world; firstly on the trip of a lifetime in Bento Boxes, Boomerangs & Red Foxes, and then once more travelling down under, this time to New Zealand at the start of a pandemic which would rock the world. Hot Pools, Paua Shells & a Pandemic brings the reader full circle back to Lisa's beautiful green Galicia.

This is the sequel to Lisa Rose Wright’s first memoir, Plum, Courgette and Green Bean Tart, which I read and reviewed last year. It was about her move to an old farmhouse in Galicia with her boyfriend, S, and the restoration and self-sufficiency project they embarked on. I enjoyed it so much I was very pleased when I was asked to Beta read this one, and what a lovely book it is. I have even bought a copy of the finished version.

The ongoing theme throughout Tomato, Fig and Pumpkin Jelly is Lisa and her S’ plans to get married in Galicia. What they didn’t anticipate when they decided to tie the knot was the bureaucratic shenanigans they would have to go through to make it to the altar. The story of their efforts to fulfil the seemingly impossible requirements is the thread that sews this lovely memoir together.

The chapters are a mix of Lisa’s letters home to her beloved mother, diary entries and a narrative that provides the glue as well as the links between the sections. Apart from the wedding plans, we learn more about their noble restoration of their lovely Spanish home as well as stories about their chickens, rabbits and other furry friends (or not) and also their delightful neighbours. And of course, the letters to mum are full of news interspersed with teasing daughterly humour.

It’s a gorgeous mix, bound by Lisa’s vivacious personality, which bounces off every page. I loved it; hers is the life I would so love to live and it was wonderful to immerse myself in her world with S for a while. All in all, this is a charming book that will leave you dreaming of going to Galicia and living there in a ramshackle house with lots of chickens. Just a delight altogether.

In book one, Lisa and S were beginning renovations on their Galician home, and starting to grow their own food. In book two there is still a lot of demolition and renovation to be done, but at last things are falling into place: the ruin is becoming the home of their dreams, and eating mostly home grown/bred food is a reality. I loved this book just as much as I did the first one. The same way of telling the story through diary entries, letters home to mum and accompanying narration makes the book flow well. I enjoyed the stories of everyday life, the occasional forays into the surrounding area on walks and overnight stays, the animals, the people, and the battles with Spanish bureaucracy (especially one particular dragon!) to allow them to get married. And then there's the bonus of a photo book and recipes! I most definitely recommend this book, and I'm eagerly awaiting book three. Thanks, Lisa for a very enjoyable read.

If you, like me, wonder what it would be like to live in another country, then you would enjoy Lisa's books. As she describes month to month events in her daily life in the Galicia region of northwest Spain, she'll make you feel like you are there with her - and if you've ever been to the area, she'll make you want to go back. In this book, Lisa focuses on the challenges of dealing with Spanish bureaucracy in order to get married in her adopted country (spoiler alert! She is successful!). Her descriptions of places, events, and local people will make you feel like you've been there.
Toward the back of the book, there is a British English glossary for those of us from other English speaking countries. I was able to read Lisa's story without guessing at or looking up unfamiliar British terms, something I truly appreciated!

I REALLY enjoyed reading about the author’s day to day adventures renovating an old Spanish home, and the day to day life in the Spanish countryside. It is written both in her narration, and in her letters to her Mum back in England. It is a thoroughly enjoyable window into a very different life, and I eagerly await the next chapter. Start with the first book, when they are moving to Spain and house shopping. You will get hooked, and go on to read this one too! (And wait for #3!).

Enjoyed the cooking, and especially the wedding…love Lisa’s tributes to Spanish bureaucracy. So nice to hear a reasonable response to it rather than whining. It’s frustrating and that is shown, but within the forgiving balm of love.

Yes, it is here, at last, book 2 in the Writing Home series, Tomato, Fig & Pumpkin Jelly. What a delight to read, following along with the theme of book 1, book 2 is also based around Lisa's diary entries and her letters home to her beloved Mum. Lisa has a way of making you feel included in their story, making you feel you are there experiencing it with her. Her words just flow and are full of cheerfulness and joy and I was hooked from page 1.

Lisa starts with a recap of book 1, a little memory refresher which I found helpful. We travel through the next eighteen months in Galicia, following their travels with more Spanish bureaucracy and sour-faced officials. We begin in February 2009 and a rather out of the blue and surprising proposal from her blue-eyed partner, S.

This year's renovations include getting their bedroom, the kitchen and sunroom sorted out, of course, there is always something else going on and in some instances getting in the way of the renovations. What an amazing woman she is, it seems that Lisa can turn her hand to anything. Not only a wonderful cook, maker of preserves, homemaker but she can turn her hand to plastering walls and tiling floors.

The rearing of chickens and fluffy bunny rabbits means no real holiday time, they do, however, manage to get the occasional night away, giving them a couple of days where they can explore a bit further afield. The Spanish neighbours and friends feature once again and it is easy to see and feel the love Lisa and S hold for them, they are all part of their integral day to day to life.

Will her handsome blue-eyed partner become her blue-eyed husband, well you will just have to read it to find out. Believe me, once you start reading it you will not want to put it down, I even read it whilst cooking my son's meals...I was most disgruntled that he wanted me to feed him whilst I was lost in Galicia and all its delights.

Having lived in Spain it was lovely reading about a part I have only skirted past, one day I will be visiting, who knows to call on Lisa and S and tasting some of those wonderful preserves.

I have read Lisa's other books, Camino and Christmas in Galicia along with writing home book 1, these are all wonderful books and I can highly recommend them all.

Once again I thank you Lisa for a truly wonderful read, roll on book 3, lol. xxx

I so enjoyed going back to Galicia again thanks to Lisa's wonderful writing and descriptions. The hard work behind the house renovations and becoming self-sufficient is always full of interest and I love to read about the solutions Lisa and S find. The second book in the series has an ongoing theme of a particular section of Spanish bureaucracy and the description of one major hurdle in that process is wonderful!
As in Lisa's first book in this series the narrative is told through Lisa's own diary entries, letters to her mum and Lisa's narrative. This is a really wonderful way of telling her story and really makes it personal.
Another aspect I really enjoyed is that each chapter has a separate underlying theme running through it, and through this we also get to learn about local food, foraging for mushrooms, more Spanish bureaucracy, local towns and cities, Spanish customs and way of life and much more.
A thoroughly enjoyable read and I am really looking forward to the next book in the series.

I loved the first book. I loved this second book. Can't wait to read the third.... I loved that it was written in English and not American. I loved the description of the house and garden renovations. This was not just a tarting up job! Personally I've never heard of anyone with their loo in the sitting room!!
And I loved the recipes and the sometimes interesting food combinations... it gave me hope!
And finally I loved the people, the customs, the animals and the day to day life in Galicia. This is a great book for anyone planning to leave Britain and start again. It's also a great book for those who will only get to do such a move in their dreams....
    Perfect.
