Finley (Sunset Cove Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
It’s been seven years since Daniel Finley left his hometown in Florida for the hustle and bustle of Chicago’s city life.
Since then, he’s worked hard for his position at the prestigious law firm Leighton & Associates, even when it’s caused distance and isolation from his family and friends. But that’s all about to change.
On his thirtieth birthday, he receives the one thing he never dared hope for. Something that was promised to him years earlier—a note. One simple sentence from the man he’s never been able to forget.
Six words will forever change the course of their lives.
Brantley Hayes has it all. Or so he thinks. When he first made the decision to take a job down in Florida, his family thought he was crazy. But, after years of living in the quiet beach town, he finally feels a sense of community. He’s surrounded himself with friends who are like family, has a job he loves, and owns a spectacular beachfront property that is his sanctuary.
Yet he still feels unfulfilled, as if a piece of the puzzle is missing, and he knows exactly which piece it is. On an impulse, he follows through with a promise he made years earlier. A promise to call home the one he sent away.
Nothing is as simple as it seems.
After years of separation, the former lovers are reunited, but Brantley wasn’t expecting to encounter the high walls now guarding Daniel’s heart.
Daniel may not be the same person he was when he left, but he knows that the first step to healing is the note in his hand.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseProfessor Brantley Hayes….. I probably shouldn’t start my review this way, but damn.
He might just be my new favorite person. Not only is he hot as hell, but good lord, I might go to church if he asked me to. And I’m not easily converted, but for this guy, I might dunk my head in some holy water, or a pool, or whiskey. I mean really, does it matter at this point? He could be a nightwalker from Game of Thrones and I’d be like—Yes Sir, please take me to your dark dungeon and turn my eyes blue. Yes Brantley, Please!
OK, moving on…
Daniel, please come home. Please!!
I refuse to ruin the story for anyone, but I will tell you this.
First, read the blurb, because I refuse to retell the story via blurb.
I will say that this AMAZING story is told in past and present tense, third person POV. And I know that some people shy away from third person, but I swear you won’t even notice! Ella is seamless with her words, and so will be your reading experience.
Ahhh to be in Florida again… Finn wants sooooo badly to come home, and he does. He wants to respond to that note. He wants to visit the one place that made him feel like home. Beyond those swaying white curtains, beyond that countertop. Daniel is basically trying to act tough and he’s putting on a front. And….
HAHA!! BURN! I’m not gonna tell you!
YOU MUST BUY TO ENJOY (said in caveman voice)
The side characters in this book will take your heart right along with the main MC’s. They are simply, magnetic. I love reading books that bring my heart close to everyone that I read about. And Ella just gave me some new best book friends, with this book. I LOVE everyone! (ok, maybe not everyone) but you get it.
There was a silent desperation in the fight for love, and a severity in the power to conquer it. Nothing made sense, yet everything MADE sense. The dichotomy of love is what made this book soar above any other, and the simplicity of love is what made it real. Ella, you made me cry again…in the best way.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI finished this book 3 or 4 days ago. I have struggled to come up with a review because it was just so cute and sweet and happy and sad and this book made me hella emotional, on many levels, and I just loved it so much. See, I'm a rambling mess.
I cannot stop thinking about Daniel and Brantley's story. Every once in a while, a book comes along that checks all of the boxes and makes my reader heart sing with joy. Well it's been a couple days, I've had time to collect my thoughts and here is what I have decided. Finley made my top reads of the year list for sure but it may have very well landed itself on my top 10 books of all time list.
If you love a good 2nd chance romance and are apparently late to the game like me, read this book! I love Ella Frank. I read my first book by her before this book was even released. I cannot believe I didn't read this back then but maybe it was book fate. If there is such a thing. Lol I think I was meant to read it now instead of then in order to fully appreciate their story. But I digress...if you like MM romance with a forbidden-ish element, smoking hot sexy scenes as well as a shot at a second chance with the one that got away, READ THIS BOOK. That is all!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2016Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMy biggest feeling after reading Finley is disappointment. Ella Frank can do so much better. Try and Take were two of the best romance books I've read. Trust was not as good but it still had Logan and Tate and was definitely worth reading. Finley seems like it was written by a different author.
I am not that hard to get to suspend belief. After all, I believed a 27 year old man who had been married could not know that he was bisexual until he met Logan in Try. There were lots of other things in the Temptation series that required some suspension of belief and I happily went there. But Finley was too much. You need to believe that Daniel would leave his lover, family, and friends and not come back for 7 years. That after a 3 year relationship he would just leave with no more contact when Brantley told him to go. That when he did come back his mom, sister, and best friend would be OK with him abandoning them after 2 nights to go stay with his ex. That someone like Brantley would have started a relationship with a student. That they would delay starting their sexual relationship back up for things like cheese, grapes, and a nap. In the Temptation series Frank was a master at creating delicious delayed gratification. In Finley it just feels like stretching and filling. The overlong flashbacks do very little to enhance the book, either. Again, a lot of those scenes could have be a sentence or two.
Very little actually happens in the book. The secondary characters are barely there. I can't list everything that was disappointing without spoilers, but there isn't even that much to spoil.
My biggest problem, though, was the sloppy way 'he' and 'him' was used throughout the book. Bad writing and bad editing. I often had trouble figuring out who was talking/thinking. I read a lot of m/m and I don't think I have ever had this much trouble figuring out which character the author was referring to. At least one sentence had 3 he's in it, and they weren't all the same he. That is just laziness.
If this book was written by someone else I would not have thought much about it. However, I considered Ella Frank an auto-buy. I really feel like she phoned this one in or rushed it. Maybe after she wrote Trust and didn't get much blow-back about it being substandard she feels she doesn't have to work so hard. I don't know. I do know she is not an auto-buy anymore.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ella Frank does it again...m/m at it's best!
Format: KindleVerified Purchase5+++++++++++++++++ swooning stars!!!!
Ella Frank does it again...m/m at it's best! Finn and Brantley have a past. Can they find their way back together after they teary and heartbreaking end seven years ago? Seven years in which both have changed, grown and work their asses off to make a great career. But no matter how successful they are and love their lifes...something important is missing to be truly happy.
It's time to come home, Finn.
One letter with six words...and Finn's entire world is spinning out of control. Should he? Can he? Does he want to? The hurt still sits deep. There's a huge wall around his heart. He wanted to get down and dirty with a couple once, but has been refused. Something that still stunk as well. A couple you know when you always read Ella Frank. A couple that will make you squeal at the end of the book as well. And there's a reason for his draw to that lawyer.
Brantley can't forget the one love of his life. The one that was forbidden...or so he believes. He doesn't regret it and he doesn't regret that his decision had a deep impact on both of their lifes. It was for the best, wasn't it? Although he tries to guard his heart, he can't stop it. Feelings are rolling in like the waves of the ocean and nothing can stop them.
Ella Frank has once again given us two men. Two men that have once been together and then apart. And now it's time to come home. Dealing with whatever is obviously still between them. Get it out of their systems and finally move on. Yeah, right! As that ever works. It should be two weeks to get a grip. Well, it's a nice fantasy and yet real life gets in their way once again.
I love the little flashbacks to their first time. They are perfectly placed throughout the story as it continues. It's flawless and so easy to fall into the story, thanks to Ella Frank's amazing writing and the way she creates characters and stories. And also her secondary characters are fun and add to the story perfectly. They also make you excited and curious for the next book in the series.
One character that should be mentioned beside the others...Finn's mum! OMG, she is gorgeous and lovely and you just want to hug her.
The story is lovely, beautiful, heartbreaking, funny and in true Ella Frank style sexy and spiced with off the charts chemistry. It's not as dirty and explicit as her Temptation series, but it will still make you squirm and sweat and hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 SMOKING HOT STARS!!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseYESSSSS!!!! My first inclination is to say that I don't know how Ella Frank does it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. But I do know. It's a combination of things, but above all else, it's her characters. She has a gift for making her readers fall-and I mean FALL HARD-for the characters she creates. She did it again with Finn and Brantley. Her Temptation series was a top favorite for me last year, so I couldn't WAIT to get my hands on this book.
Daniel “Finn” Finley is a successful lawyer in Chicago. When this book begins he gets a letter telling him to come home to Florida. It's a letter from the one man he can't let go of. The same man who broke his heart 7 years ago. That man just happens to be his old college professor, Brantley Hayes. Seriously, can it get any better than an m/m, student teacher romance?? He immediately heads home with one intention in mind...to let Brantley see the man he has become, and in the words of Finn, “Touch him, **** him, and then forget him.” Under no circumstances will he allow his heart to get involved. *sigh* too bad the heart doesn't always listen.
“God, he was a fool. A fool to have thought he could ever go back there and keep his heart out of the equation.”
This story is told mostly in the present but we do get flashbacks from their past. Sometimes it's hard to keep up with the present when an author does that, but in this instance it was written perfectly. We needed those glimpses into the past in order to understand the love and heartbreak that Finn and Brantley shared. The flashbacks, coupled with the dual POV, made it so easy to connect to both characters.
I have to admit that I was a little nervous to read this book. We met Finn in Ella's Temptation series and honestly, I didn't like him very much. That's only because I LOVE Logan and Tate, and Finn was, how can I say this...Finn was an arrogant jerk. I should've known better. I should've known that there was SO MUCH MORE under the surface. Ella Frank is a master at writing about men with hidden vulnerabilities. Her characters are complex, and when she slowly reveals all their layers you can't help but fall in love with them. Finn was no different, and it didn't take me long to see that.
“This wasn't supposed to be complicated. He'd constructed a wall so high that no one had even come close to getting over it-but then again, no one was Brantley.”
Brantley...holy HOT professor. Where were those professors when I was in school? What I wouldn't give to be a fly on the wall in the bedroom with these two. Ella Frank KNOWS how to write sex scenes. I don't usually talk about this in my reviews because I get a little embarrassed, but you can't read a book by her and NOT talk about it. SMOKING HOT!!!!!! BURNING UP THE PAGES!!!! I'm talking about the need to put your kindle down and fan yourself because it's so hot. Every. Single. Word. I'm the type of person who skims sex scenes sometimes. Do I ever skim an Ella Frank sex-scene? NOPE. Do I go back and reread them? YUP. No shame here.
The secondary characters were great in this book too and I'm really looking forward to whatever Ella writes next. I have to mention that we got to catch up with Logan and Tate a little, which makes my heart happy. If you haven't read Ella's Temptation series yet...why not??? READ IT!!
This was a story about second chances. It was sexy, funny and swoon-worthy. If you're an m/m fan, this one is not to be missed!! I say this a lot, but if you've never read an m/m book, take a chance. Love is love no matter what form it comes in, and this was a great love story!! I highly recommend this book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Somptueux !

5.0 out of 5 stars Just beautiful
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was like reading a beautiful dance. These two men broke my heart then put it back together again- and I don't say that lightly. This book made me feel like I was there watching and feeling every moment with them. Seeing them be so brave and honest about what their relationship was and wasn't, what it could and couldn't be.
The combination of being in the present then being offered a glimpse into the past to see who they were and what happened was perfect.
The ending was lovely. Can't wait for the next one.
Oh and definitely...Tate and Logan have been missed!!!
