The First Nova I See Tonight Paperback – March 15, 2021

4.0 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

"First Nova transports you right out of this world. Fast-paced with explosive action and ample humor, Kilgore has certainly crafted a galaxy that will steal the heart of readers." -- Danielle Novotny, author of the Remade trilogy

Space jockey Dirken Nova and his cyborg companion, Yiorgos, are hired for an "easy money" job transporting a mysterious safebox between planets. It would be enough for them to finally afford their own starship again. But the gig goes sideways when galactic pirates attack. A merciless pirate captain, a tentacled mafioso, an enigmatic cult, and a femme fatale alien lover all want the package for themselves. Who's a smuggler to trust?

This space opera is a return to the beloved "zap gun" stories of the past -- a fun, exciting, and sometimes erotic romp across the galaxy!

Kilgore has written a fast-moving space opera, full of exciting battles and unexpected alien trysts. Solid characters and writing. I enjoyed it!

Dirken Nova and his cyborg companion, Yiorgos, are hired for what they think job transporting a mysterious box. And when all of space is brimming with life and individuals with their own agendas, of course the two run into trouble.

I had such a great time being transported by Dirken in this fast paced and explosive novel. The humor between Dirken and Yiorgos is sharp and clever, and their banter was well-timed between bouts of explosive action. I'm very curious what lies in Dirken and Yiorgos' backstories, as it seems they have more to explore.

Kilgore also takes the perfect amount of page time to expand upon his multiple species and scifi locations, and the technology he's woven into the story is detailed enough to seem realistic. I never lost track of who looked like what or the setting in which the characters found themselves.

A new direction for an author with fantastic world-building skills. After reading his fantasy series and short-stories I was hooked but I was a little nervous when I found he was venturing into a space opera - I must say I am happily surprised!

How he is able to craft such wonderful universes across so many different genre's is just beyond me, but its all there - a fully immerse and rich universe that is presented consistently and precisely across the material - with a fun story and engaging characters to boot. Some really good characters as well, characters with stories, with flaws, with real feelings who are just trying to make it through the day.

I can't wait for the sequel!

First Nova... is a romping fun book. I was pretty aggravated by the things that cropped up in my life while I was reading it that distracted me. Main character has enough of a Han Solo like flair to feel familiar, but different enough to be original and not even the slightest hint of a derivative feel.

I think I would sum it up by saying it has all of the positive attributes of science fiction written for teens; fun, addictive, but is more sophisticated and certainly sexier. I recommend it highly. I think it would make a good film adaptation as well, but a lot of money would need to be budgeted for all of the alien effects.

Jason Kilgore has a talent for science fiction, and in this one his craft really shines! It's not usually my genre, but I liked the fast-moving pace of the book and found myself drawn to the relationship between our protagonist and his quirky side-kick. If it's action and daring you're looking for, you'll be really in "the heavens" with this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Space Opera with Libido

If you're looking for a fun space opera read and a clear cut story, this is for you. With echoes of a Han Solo style character mixed with alien sex scenes are your thing, "The First Nova I see Tonight" will keep you entertained.

About my only criticism is that the physical alien descriptions were too frequent for me and distracting, so I just skimmed over them.

Perfect cottage or rainy day reading for fans of the genre.
