- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseKennedy Ryan was a new-to-me author, and with this series she has carved a special spot in my bookshelves. I finished this series in 4 days- and although I wasn't planning on reading them back-to-back, I could not have stopped even if I wanted to- which I didn't. Not even close.
For lack of a better word, I am floored by this series. Overwhelmed. Emotional. Unable to move on. Although I read a lot- and have some favorite books where I LOVE the characters- this was on a different level. Grip and Bristol. Just.. we should all be lucky to have a love like Grip and Bristol.
This is why I waited to write a review. Even two days later I am still incoherent. Sigh.
So here are just SOME of the things I loved about this series. The writing was flawless. It was just so well written and just so SMARTLY written. This author made us a part of the story. And side note. HIS LYRICS. HOLY CRAP. I just bow down to this author who not only wrote a beautiful book, a beautiful series, but she's also a poet. And that's not the same kind of skill. Bruise is the kind of song that should be real. And his vows. And Still. And his words at THAT moment. And there are just numerous other times where Grip's words play integral parts to the story. And they were so so well written.
And her characters were really well developed. They were not stereotypical. They were not shallow. They were just so very real. Their reactions made sense because they were exactly what people would do in real life. Their thoughts made sense. In a lot of romances the "villain of the story" is another person. This is not a knock on them because who doesn't like to see our hero or heroine rise above "the other person" and be victorious. But it makes the story about someone else in part. But that's not the point of this story- this story is all Grip and Bristol. Always. And I love that so much.
But what I loved the MOST about this book, so much so it deserves its own mention, is the weaving of social commentary throughout the story. Simply put, this book makes you think. In the best of ways. We are all flawed. We all have biases. We are all naive to others struggles. (And Iz statement on being naive to something not being the problem- its what you do after- this is one of my favorite quotes). It takes a special kind of someone to be able to write a story, that not only shows everyones flaws, but does so in a way that does not put us on the defensive (oh I would NEVER do that. I would NEVER think that) or make us judge from a moral high horse. It simply makes you think and RELATE. What does bias mean? What does finding commonality mean? Can you really step into someone else's shoes? How do these things play out in real life experiences.
Which takes me to our main characters. I don't think I've ever loved a couple so much. These two. Just from the start they stole my heart. And it was a surprise because I honestly didn't expect to love them (or this story) so much (what can I say- I'm ALWAYS skeptical of books that get a lot of buzz). And yet I do. SO much. SO much. Their love for each other- ALWAYS- is just magical. It's why I read romance. They are the definition of soulmates. Their souls are MADE for each other- regardless of their background, race or what anyone else thinks about them.
And because each book deserves it's own recognition here are just a few more incoherent thoughts on the individual books.
FLOW
Flow was a free prequel. It showed how the two of them met- and gave a little background on where they came from. Bristol's story is more prevalent in this story. And I really felt for her. I will say if you've read some of Kennedy Ryan's other books you probably know her back story- but as this was my first book by her I had no idea what I was getting into. This book may be short- but it packed a punch. I was already invested by, like, page 3. I wanted to see these characters interact and get to know each other. And by the end of the book there was no way I wasn't going to immediately start Grip.
GRIP
So this story picks up where Flow left off. And I have to say I loved it. I was hooked on their interactions, both professionally and personally. I was rooting for them to sort their issues. I felt for both of them. That is something I should mention too- the POV switching. So good. Seeing inside these characters heads. There is truly not a villain in this story. Because even those characters you love to hate- when you start thinking about their experiences and WHY they are acting the way they are- even if you don't love them- you can understand. And I should mention that is one of the most amazing things about Kennedy Ryan's writing. She is such a SMART writer she is able to weave all these issues flawlessly into the story- and she's able to show everything to a point where you would think every single thing that happened was something she personally experienced- that WE personally experienced... because we kind of did. And while we know that isn't really true- you could believe it was because honestly it doesn't matter if she was writing from his (gender) view or her (gender) view- whether it was from his family's perspective or hers-it was all relatable.
This was just an epic love story. It is not a case where they resolve everything ASAP and then have a whole bunch of misunderstandings. No. Kennedy took her time and she stayed true to her characters and to her story. And we are lucky for it. Because it was such a beautiful story. So much so that if everything ended with Grip... I would have been happy. But I had no idea what I was getting myself into with Still.
STILL
This book GUTTED me. There is no getting around it and no other way to put it. And I will stop here and say it is without a doubt my favorite book of the three. Even with how much it hurt. I was not expecting it. But the thing is, once again every situation her characters find themselves in- they are all things that happen in real life. Even now. And that they're happening to our Grip and Bristol (because at this point there's no way you aren't possessive over these two characters) it's just brutal. As I'm writing this two of my book buddies who were behind me in reading are both messaging me. Because they just got to THAT part. And I'm experiencing it all over again. And I have to say it just hurts. But it's also beautiful. That Kennedy can write so many emotions- that she can evoke so many emotions from us. And in the end, after we don't think we will ever breathe again, we can take a deep breath and just "dwell in the possibilities."
People ask often whats your favorite series is- and I have very diverse reading habits- but when I start listing mine (because who can really just pick one) there is no doubt this one will be high on my list. I think it is the type of book you are lucky to experience. That everyone should read it. Every word was beautiful. Every step was worth it. Even those difficult ones. This is the kind of book you don't get over. It stays with you. It makes you think. It hurts. But it also makes you smile. It's the kind of book where you wish your book buddies lived nearby so you could demand hugs (seriously guys please get on that- k thanks bye). And not have your husband sitting next to you on the couch looking at you like you're crazy (not even a little sorry). And that kind of book is rare and should be appreciated and enjoyed. So I am just so so happy. And so not ready to move on or let them go. So for now I'm just going to live vicariously through my book buddies. But I'll definitely be rereading them... and without a doubt going back to read her other books. I cannot wait to go back and read Kai and Rhyson's books.
"And when the years have passed,
and we have watched a thousand sunsets, and we are bent,
our bodies crooked with age
ask me again.
In the twilight,
in the shadow of the life we have shared,
ask me if I love you,
and my heart will answer before my lips can part.
My love, my life,
my heart never left your hands.
Always,
evermore,
even after.
Still."
- Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2025Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI just love Kennedy Ryan! Her stories always touch something deep.
This book was really good and while I enjoyed it I think that I would have rated this book 3.75 but of course I rounded up. I love to see black girls win!
The story between Grip and Bristol I truly enjoyed I love that she wasn't afraid to get deep and ask the questions on racial issues and keep an open mind. I love that she saw Grip as more than some black guy that she wanted for a fling but something solid and real. Their slow burn was perfection and truly left me wanting more.
The repairing of a relationship between Bristol and her brother touched me because for the first time they truly saw each other and realized that they needed each other in ways their parents couldn't dictate. It left them able to be raw real and to show that while they lived in the same family and world they both lived and saw two totally different realities.
Overall I really enjoyed this book and definitely added the next in the series to my TBR!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchasePure poetic alchemy. I don't know what else to say about this book/novella, but if I had to sum it up in 3 words, those would be the ones. For some reason, alchemy has always been a favorite word of mine, and it was used at least twice in this book. Both in passages I highlighted because they moved me. I found I highlighted many passages in this one - okay, I highlight passages in nearly every book I read, but there were seriously a lot of highlights in this one. I have read books by this author before, and I will definitely be revisiting them after I read Grip and Bristol's book. I have some vague memories of the others, but I don't remember the almost melodic flow of poetic prose that I heard and felt as I read flow.
I am including this in my rockstar romance category/blog, simply because music is an integral part of the book, but the rockstar part is pushing things. Grip is a yet to be discovered rapper, and Rhyson is a piano virtuoso hiding from the scars his child prodigy notoriety earned him. Bristol is Rhyson's twin sister who is desperately trying to reconnect with her brother over her Spring Break from her Ivy League life on the east coast. She arrives in LA to be greeted by her brother's best friend, Marlon aka Grip. Someone she has never heard of, and shouldn't be so comfortable around, but there is a sizzling chemistry from the time Grip's hand covers Bristol's on the handle of her Louis Vuitton luggage. They may both try to fight it, with the millions of reasons why they shouldn't be attached to each other, let alone act on that undeniable attraction that leads to deep conversations (and sizzling kisses) that are intertwined in such poetic ways. Most of the rest of this review is going to take on a different style from my norm - I am actually going to let y'all into my highlights and notes along the way.
One more note, the slightly electrified designation- I am not sure if I have used it before. There are no actual sexy times in this book, but there are enough references to skew it away from the under 18 crowd. Guess I should have used Acoutic/Electric since that is a real thing and I use acoustic for clean reads and electric for the, ahem, less clean ones, but I didn't think of it until now.
But I want to share some of Ms Ryan's lovely prose with you - I can't think of a better way to convince you this is a must read.
" I like the color of smart, the shade of funny, and sexy is my favorite hue.”
I certainly understand why this passage has been highlighted enough to be "notable". It is very deep. Though I am much more Bristol than I would probably care to admit, this applies to me completely. I have always dated long haired musicians, and I am well aware that they are viewed much as another species in certain circles - especially the circles of Rhys and Bris' parents. But the traits in this passage - those are what I look for in the people I surround myself with, and the traits I have tried to instill in my children to look for in the friends they make, the people they cherish.
☆☆☆☆☆☆
“So what color am I then?” I ask before thinking better of it. He’ll probably just say I’m white, obviously. “What color are you?” he repeats, his eyes never leaving my face. “You, Bristol, are a freaking prism.”
Oh this....this is heartstopping. My ideas of romance are admittedly skewed, but that would undo me to the core. To me, that is about as romantic a statement anyone could make (says the girl who's husband tells everyone we have to keep stocked up on mayonnaise in case I need a transfusion....)
☆☆☆☆☆☆
" She carries on a helluva conversation, which from my experience, is a lost art."
See note below....this is too true, and really breaks my heart. I am guessing this is how older generations than I felt about telephones killing the art of letter writing...which makes me even sadder as there has not been a resurgence of that beauty....
☆☆☆☆☆☆
" We talked about things we don’t understand and aren’t sure we ever will. Things we thought we had figured out, only to realize we didn’t know jack shit. It feels fresh like a beginning, but it also feels like we’ve known each other for years."
These are some of the best things in life. I agree with Grip, conversation is becoming a lost art, and may be one of the things that makes me saddest for the millineal generation. (Too lazy to come up with the correct spelling at the moment, and embarrassed and a bit scared that it isn't coming naturally to me. The thrills of chronic illness.)
☆☆☆☆☆☆
" He’s lightning in a beautiful bottle, just waiting to strike."
More poetic genius. I don't remember this author being so profound...I am thinking a reread is in order. I will admit I only vaguely remember Rhyson and Bristol and Grip, and Rhyson's girlfriend whose name I won't even pretend to remember. I know the books I read were set further in the future than this...

5.0 out of 5 stars GRAN HISTORIA

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing prequel that leaves you breathless!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was my first book you Kennedy Ryan and I shamefully have to admit I had this since it was released. Oh man, was I stupid to wait this long! I can't even put into words how beautiful this book is and it is just the prequel!
Kennedy Ryan’s writing is is flawless and flowing and just takes you along the ride so easily even with the complicated issues discussed and the very different characters.
I love the different characters and their social backgrounds. The pretty heavy subjects they talk about, yet the easy way they talk about, with no judgment - just a discussion on eye level.
And knowing it's coming from an African-American author makes it even more authentic. With topics like that you know when an author doesn't have the experience and 'fakes' it.
But this is just so real.
All those 5 stars reviews you see are absolutely legit and some have better words to describe it.
I totally fell in love with Grip. All of him. Bristol is sweet and I do understand where she's coming from with her anger and her wish to get to know her twin brother again.
The end of Flow and those first words in Grip?!?!?!? 😲😲😲😲😲😲💔💔💔💔💔

5.0 out of 5 stars Flow!!
Format: KindleVerified Purchase4.5stars! Flow is the prequel to Grip and is a must read first! Bristol & Rhyson are twins and have gone through so much! Then there is Marlon/Grip as he is known and is best friends with Rhyson! Grip has been asked to pick Bristol up at the airport and these two have insta connection from the start! They have a week talking & getting to know one another and a few sneaky magical kisses too! Then when Bristol is leaving to go home something happens, will this be the end or something more???? I can see this series is going to be awesome with lots of emotion so with that said I am jumping into Grip!!
