Heartwarming, heart-squeezing, and mesmerizing!
"Follow the Hummingbird" by Elena Carter If you are looking for a brilliant, heart-squeezing, touching, and cleverly written novel about dreams, don't hesitate a second to read this one. The Plot: Tina is a young woman and an aspiring writer. She is deeply in grief after her husband's death. Tina has a bright and vivid life in her dreams. But after the tragedy, her dreams become more and more realistic. Sometimes, the woman even loses the sense of reality and track of time. The life in her dreams becomes more and more attractive than reality. Opening one door after another in her dreams, Tina risks having her soul grabbed by the ancient dark force hiding somewhere in the numerous realms of her dreams. The Writing Style: It is the first book in "The Dream Tamer Chronicles." I'm delighted I have the second one on my bookshelf. The reason is obvious –book one is so masterfully written that I couldn't get enough of it. It's one of the most heartwarming, heart-squeezing, and touching books I've recently read. Moreover, it's also one of the most cleverly written books about dreams I've read. It's apparent that the author carried out massive research giving different perspectives of views concerning dreams. But still, every single page is penetrated with deep feelings, boiling emotions, light humor, tender care, and unconditional love. The writing style is so easy and deep at the same time. The novel is unputdownable, blow minded, and mesmerizing in every line. If you watched the "Ghost Whisperer" series and enjoyed it, then you'll love reading this book. The Characters: There are a few characters in this novel. But I can't stop admiring how brilliantly and thoughtfully all of them are portrayed. Their dialogues seemed so real that I felt involved in their talks. Their emotions and feelings were described so thoroughly that it seemed I was there with them. The characters were so alive on the pages that I felt a solid emotional connection to them. I truly enjoyed how Elena Carter intertwined the main character's life in two worlds with all the tiny and essential details. I liked how virtuously the author succeeded in describing relations among the characters. As if their relations were thick ropes that could be touched and evaluated for strength. The fave quote: "Dreams are complicated. They can be a blessing or a curse." Would I read other books by this author: Sure! My humble rating is: 5.5/5 P.S. I've been too familiar with the world of dreams since my early childhood. I know perfectly well about the curse and the blessing. Probably, that's why I felt so emotionally connected with the main character and couldn't agree more with one of her musings: "It would be cool if I could take pictures of my dreams…Somebody needs to invent a camera like that…"

Have you ever wondered if there is more to our dreams? More than our brain processing the information it received during the day? Have you ever had dreams that felt absolutely different from your regular dreams that are a jumbled mix of events with a dash of the illogical added by your subconscious?

Tina has always had vivid dreams. But now she feels that something about them has changed. Not only does she remember every detail of what happened to her in a dream when she wakes up. She finds “gifts” she has brought with her from the travels in her sleep.

“Follow the Hummingbird” by Elena Carter is a story of a young woman who, while trying to cope with her grief, discovers that the recipe that works best is equally liberating and dangerous.

Tina’s husband Greg dies in a tragic accident. She knows that she has to go on living and does everything she can to pull herself out of depression. Some days it works, some days it doesn’t. Tina’s friends keep a close eye on her. And for their sake, she tries really hard to stay afloat. But when her dreams become too real – and frightening – to go on ignoring them, she finds help not from the people who know and love her. An unexpected but extremely well-timed meeting gives Tina what she needs the most: hope.

“Follow the Hummingbird” opens a door to a fascinating world of dreams. This world has no boundaries and its possibilities are endless. Common sense doesn’t work here. While you are dreaming – living in your dreams – you have to listen to your intuition since logic doesn’t work here too. In your dreams, you can meet the unimaginable creatures that live by the rules completely different from the ones we are used to. Moreover, you can meet the people you can’t meet in the real world.

Tina meets her husband in one of her dreams. Her heart breaks again, but it also finally begins to heal. Besides, she finds a purpose. But her husband doesn’t approve of her newly-acquired goal. He warns her that everything about the dream world is unstable and dangerous and that nothing here goes according to plan.

“Follow the Hummingbird” is a real treat for every reader with a bright imagination and an inquisitive mind. Tina’s reality-bending journey is something you don’t want to miss.

Tina is grieving the death of her husband and starts having strange dreams that lead to stranger things happening in reality. Despite the dark topic, the book is actually full of light. Tina is super relatable and I laughed out loud at some of the banter she had with her friends.

The author did a great job at capturing the strange atmosphere of dreams and of being in a dream. She mixed small details of everyday life with magical events seamlessly, making it feel real, like it could all happen to you.

The plot is original and takes some unexpected turns, which kept me interested. I’m glad there will be a next book, because when I got to the end I wanted more.

    And the cover is gorgeous!

For clean readers: there is swearing (including the f-word), but no sex.

There is a lot to like about this book, and that's where I will start.
    I liked:
    Clean formatting.
    Mostly good grammar.
It had an Alice in Wonderland vibe, which I liked.
Used rock meanings, which I enjoyed.

    Things I didn't like:
The MC's friends immediately believed her. I'm sorry, but if I had a friend who believed they were
traveling to another world, I would not immediately believe them. It was unbelievable and broke
    my suspension of disbelief.

Every time the MC asked a question, she was told she wasn't ready. It was annoying and
    repetitive.

Some of the dialogue was campy and just too perfect. For example, her friends always said just
the right thing, and everyone was just too perfect.

I had to force myself to finish the book. I will not be continuing in the series.

Wouldn't it be nice if you could dip into the dreamworld whenever you wanted to? Only, some dreamworlds are safe, enlightening, while others dark, dangerous and hostile. I thoroughly enjoyed following Tina's journey, when dreams begin to consume her, sometimes for days, as she navigates through her grief of losing a husband and her life thereafter. Along the way, she learns a great deal, and of her own reality from strangers who become friends, and the support of her close friends. This is my first time reading Elena Carter's work, and I can definitely say, not the last time. I'm eagerly looking forward to reading the sequels.

If you had the ability to dream yourself to different worlds and realities, would you brave the risks to do so? What if you could be with someone you lost? Would you ever want to come back? These are the struggles faced by the main character in Follow the Hummingbird. Carter artfully blends grief and devotion with fantasy for an engaging read!

I want to say the story is fantastic! Tina, I feel sorry for her. The struggle of losing her husband. Now, she sees him in her dreams, ah. The vibe of the old lady’s (her new friend) place reminds me of Howl’s Moving Castle. The crystals and the flowers. Pretty creative. Elena did a great job putting the story together. Only thing that bothers me is her friend Natalie. I feel every time Tina talks to her; she laughs. I can understand here and there but every conversation, hmm. I don’t know. Maybe that’s her personality, but it was too much. I feel so bad for her friend Matt (I may spell his name wrong) He cares about her and falls in love with her. My heart ached. I hope they will be together after Tina’s husband encourages her to move on. But I can see why Tina didn’t want to. Toward the end, I felt it was a bit rushed. Again, I’m definitely curious to see what happens next.

While a fantasy book, FtH is a story of grief and love and finding yourself in the darkest moments. Even more so, finding who you were meant to be in the absence of everything you thought you knew. An Adult fantasy for those looking for something a little different and a lot beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful story of a woman's journey through grief and the dream world!

I thoroughly enjoyed Elena Carter's take on the meaning and mystical quality of our dreams. I am very intrigued by the many dream worlds and look forward to reading how these characters "tame" them in future books of this series. Tina was a very relatable protagonist and I found her relationships with Natalie, Mike, and especially Alice to be very endearing.

My only complaint when it comes to this novel is that I wanted more! I wanted to know more about Tina's late husband, to learn more about how dream taming works and the infamous Umbrus, and to get more scenes with Alice—I've got a soft spot for eccentric older ladies!

Still, I'm sure many of my questions will be answered in Book 2 and I look forward to reading it. Carter has a way of describing dreams and their settings in breathtaking detail as well as exploring loss of different kinds with a perfect blend of rawness and lightness. This is a magic and hopeful read. I definitely recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written and emotionally compelling

At first, Follow the Hummingbird appears to be a typical piece of fantasy fluff. Engaging and entertaining, it’s not until you’re a few pages in that you realise there is so much more to this book. Tina’s husband, Greg, was killed in a senseless car accident a few months earlier. Since then, Tina has struggled to come to terms with her new reality and strange images and scenarios are haunting her dreams. But are they only dreams? Or is there more going on than Tina could ever imagine?

With the support of her best friend, Natalie, and her boss, Mike – who, FYI, best boss ever – Tina is trying to get her life back on track, and the book deals with bereavement and grief sensitively and compassionately. But then Greg starts showing up in Tina’s dreams – and that’s when things really get weird.

Beautifully written, the reader is drawn into Tina’s journey as she tries to cope with survivor guilt, loss, and incredulity at the ever-deepening spiral of strangeness that she is sucked into. Meeting Alice, an elegant and elderly lady who seems to know more about Tina’s situation than Tina does, Tina finally begins to get to the truth of the matter. Only the truth is impossible. Isn’t it?

At the heart of this book is a message. When is it okay to gently say goodbye to the past and move on? And if your heart has been broken, can it ever be mended enough to give to another? These were the questions we were left with at the end of the book, and I can’t wait to find out where the author will take us next.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read with rich descriptions and symbolism
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2022
I thought this was an easy read that had some enjoyable moments. The book was told from Tina's point of view; reeling from the death of her husband Greg, she slowly descended into the world of her dreams, a place where she could meet Greg again. Alice was an interesting character; I liked her witchy eccentricity immediately, with her posh hats and how she initially bonded with Tina after noticing her obsidian ring. I was unsure about how old Tina and Natalie were supposed to be; both tended to giggle a lot and were described as 'girls' in the book, though Natalie had children and Tina was a widow. I'm not sure if they were supposed to be in their twenties, but to me they seemed like teenagers, which made me feel as though it was more of a YA story. I really enjoyed the descriptions of the different worlds that Tina travelled to and the beings she met in each place, which were richly described. I also liked that she had proof of her travels by relaying information to Kate from Greg about her late husband, though I felt that Mike and Natalie were too quick to accept her dream stories as reality, and I would have found this more believable if they were also given proof via Greg or Alice in the same manner as Kate. The symbolism throughout the stories worked well: of the hummingbirds and butterflies and also of the powers of crystals and other amulets such as the brooch Tina had. I really wanted Tina to be more self-reliant though; she was too quick to adopt a defeatist mentality, often stating that she was tired, or wanted to go home, or afraid, relying on help from Greg and Alice in the dream worlds and Mike and Natalie in the real world too much. But she was a good-hearted character, particularly in helping Kate. Overall it was an enjoyable read, but seemed at times more of a YA story because of how Tina was presented with a more adolescent mindset.
