Review
“With so many stories about Navy SEALs out there, you might think there couldn’t be anything new to add to the subgenre, but McCallan will prove you wrong. Full of suspense with some paranormal elements too, her first entry in the Forged series is a pulse-pounding adventure.” ―RT Book Reviews (4 stars, HOT)
“If you like your romance served with a side of military lingo, weapons, tactics, nonstop action, and smokin’ hot SEALs, Forged in Fire is for you. This book is an edge-of-your-seat thrill ride. McCallan’s writing is terrific. The heat between Beth Brown and Zane Winters ignites the first time they meet and grows throughout the book. Strong secondary characters (perfect for several sequels) and a full panoply of bad guys, from thugs to mysterious puppet masters, make it hard to tell where the next bullet, knife or punch is coming from. On the strength of the conflict, action and romance, I’d recommend this book in a heartbeat.” ―Willa, Smart Bitches Trashy Books

- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2012As I read this novel, I thought I was reading a seasoned suspense author with several novels under her belt like Christy Reece, Cherry Adair, or Anne Stuart. I also thought I was probably in the 2nd book or further in a military suspense series. Imagine my surprise when I checked her web site to learn that this is the inaugural novel for a fledgling author! I'd liken it to a little league player visiting Yankee Stadium and blasting one out of the park!
What an awesome novel!
SYNOPSIS:
Heroine works for an airline, and has a vivid dream of a flight being highjacked and multiple murders.
The hero is a military guy on vacation with his buddies, going to a wedding in Hawaii. The hero is know for his premonitions. He has one where he sees his friends being shot to death on the airplane. In walks the heroine to the boarding area. The details in her frightening dream have started coming true, and she wants to reassure herself that it was just a dream and nothing more. She obtains a standby ticket on the Hawaiian flight in order to see the passengers and compare details with her vivid dream.
But it was more than a dream.
The hero spots the heroine, and instantly there is combustible chemistry. I mean up in flames, go for broke, smokin' boy-girl chemistry. Oouuff! They meet and work together to stop the hijacking and the murders of all the people on the airplane. Then they discover that the inside person who left the guns on the airplane is the heroine's friend. His wife and child have been taken, and he's been compromised and forced to do this heinous act.
The military hero and his pals also realize that the FBI has been compromised. The terrorists have taken the family of the head investigator. The military heros save the day. But they end up in a heap of trouble for their efforts. The guys were on vacation and not officially on duty. They even got a thumbs up for a sanctioned take down of the house where the hostages were being held. Then the rug was pulled out from them.
They will have to solve a vicious murder in order to protect themselves from court martials in the next book.
What I loved:
The characters were pretty much leaping off the pages and bursting into my imagination. I loved the FBI guy's wife. She really saved not only her family, but her all the hostages. She's had her whole world brought down around her ears, but is gritting her teeth and going after the bad guys.
The romance between H and H (IMO the heroine should also be capitalized - why only capitalize the H for male heroes?) proceeds at a great pace and it..... clicks.
The bad guys were REALLY bad. The author got into their heads and gave us glimpses of the darkness and desperation that fueled their dirty deeds.
What I didn't like so much:
There was the whole trade one hostage for another thing that didn't seem terribly well thought out. But then again, the bad guy was supposedly desperate for any leverage he could gain.
I understand the need to setup and transition the characters into the next book, but I HATE being left hanging waiting for the next one to be published. Arghhhh! This is the bitter sweet agony of finding a new author that you love, but now you have to suffer the wait for the next publication.
OVERALL:
I'd compare it to a Catherine Mann, or one the Cherry Adair hot military heros genre of books.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2013It was just a crazy dream, right? That's what Beth Brown kept telling herself, right up until she locks eyes on the three men she'd dreamed about the night before, men she saw die as they fought the hijackers of the plane getting ready to board from gate C18.
Was it really a dream...or was it a premonition of death and destruction the likes of which Beth could hardly comprehend? One that showed her a man whose name she knows and whose face is as familiar to her as the back of her own hand despite never seeing him before in her life. A man who would fight violently against the carnage that was coming. And lose.
Navy SEAL Lieutenant Commander Zane Winters wasn't looking forward to wasting three days of leave flying to Hawaii for a wedding, but when his gift suddenly descends on him and thrusts him into the bloody visions of the imminent deaths of his platoon buddies and traveling companions Rawls and Cosky, all thoughts of leave evaporate like so much smoke.
Moments after being swamped by those disturbingly fleeting and not terribly helpful visions, he turns and meets the eyes of a woman who stirs more than just his psychic abilities. Everything in him recognizes her as the one he's been waiting for his entire life. The mate of his soul.
As if seesawing from intense battle-ready concern to yearning need in five clicks or less wasn't enough, his woman is sitting at the gate of the very plane that is obviously doomed to disaster. Unless he can save the day for them both.

I'm not sure what I was expecting when I originally picked up this series debut by McCallan, but it certainly wasn't the slightly chaotic and weird story that I got. At times it almost seemed like the book suffered from multiple personalities, as the tone of the plot wavered between the lightly humorous, the sexy and combustible, and the cold, clinically orchestrated violent. Not to mention the dark, vile acts of unspeakable horror.
There were moments that made me grin and chemistry between the main characters that made me sweat. Other moments entertained for their tense action or intriguing ingenuity and complexity of conflict. Then there was the scene that gave me a brutal kick in the gut and left me shaken and disturbed.
Still, this is a paranormal-flavored, military-themed romantic suspense with an imaginative concept, solid writing, and likable characters. And as much as there were moments when I was thrown by the wildly vacillating tone, or distressed by the lack world-building and absence of a satisfying conclusion, I did enjoy the read. More, honestly, than I thought I would based on that whole soul mate thing. It is in no way a favorite plot device of mine and it's one that smacks readers in the face from the very beginning.
I think McCallan was extremely smart in handling that, though, because while über-alpha male Zane revs hot and hard as the chest-thumping, possessive male he is as soon as he sees Beth, she is having none of it. In fact, Beth considers the reality of alpha males just a half-rung of evolution above complete troglodytes at best and the idea of a romance with one laughable. She fights her attraction to Zane and dismisses his claims on her. She certainly doesn't feel the same soul mate compulsion he does.
That highly amusing conflict was what saved the beginning of this book for me and kept me reading.
The deeper I went into the book, the more surprising and entertaining I found it. Despite some issues, the storyline felt fresh and the writing kept me guessing with neat little touches here and there that lent an original and unique - and yes, weird, but not really in a bad way - flavor to the story. It wasn't perfect, no, and I did have one big beef with the timeline of the story and the arc of the romance within that timeline, but McCallan won me over.
Taken with the well written, creative storyline and fun main characters, the things that are normally big hot buttons of mine didn't bother me so much that they prevented me from liking this read as a whole. I'm intrigued to see where the series is planning to go next, but I do admit, I'm hoping for a more consistent tone, more realistic timeline, and a more self-contained plot arc with a better conclusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super spannend

5.0 out of 5 stars It’s not just a dream
Amazing story, so much unexpected, mysterious, dark. I had goose bumps from staring off first few pages. So unreal as in amazing. You just have to believe…

4.0 out of 5 stars Thanks for a good read
Very nice plot, well-written, although a bit confusing in minor detailing sometimes. And the end seemed rather abrupt. But i enjoyed the novel, am going to read the next one too. Thanks for giving us the reading pleasure..

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!! FANTASTIC AND INTENSE !
This is a book worth reading and a series you will not want to miss out on! I was captured and on the edge of my seat from the first page to the last. 'FORGED IN FIRE' is a great story with really INTENSE scenes that will blow you away. This is the first time that I have ever read anything by Trish McCallan, but I can honestly say that she has become one of my new favorites to read. If you want some SERIOUS SEXY & SMART ALPHA MALES (Navy Seal`s, ladies & gentlemen) and SMART SAVVY HEROINE`S, you have picked the right book to read. This author gives you everything you could hope for in a book. Great story-line, intricate plots, action, love, and strong hero`s and heroine`s with ATTITUDE and ISSUE`S! PLEASE, give me more Ms. McCallan! I loved reading this book and can not wait to read Cosky`s story 'FORGED IN ICE'!
