Figgy Pudding by Francine: Old Timey Holiday Kitchen Book 9 Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 69 ratings

Francine Mulder’s life in 1878 has experienced a series of ups and downs—all because she allowed one of the benefactors of the Albany Elite Academy for Girls to raise a hope that she can attract a man willing to marry a spinster math and science teacher. She received a letter in effeminate handwriting. Was the letter from him, or did a woman write on his behalf? After taking the chance that she might like the physical science instructor better once she learns more about him―assuming he chooses to personally respond―she takes the chance and answers. She even travels to Denver and attaches herself to an all-female scientific expedition so she will have more to write about that he might find interesting. All summer she waits in vain for a reply. Just before the autumn term starts, she receives a letter but not from the same man.

Jason Sewell, a full professor of science and astronomy at the University of Iowa, is a widower with no interest in the young female students who often flock around him. He has no intention to marry again. Then, he takes a trip to Rawlins, Wyoming to view a total solar eclipse. During the weeks of hunting and exploring that follows, his friend—from whom his mother extracted a promise that a letter from a girls’ academy teacher would be answered before the end of the summer—hands him the letter. As a wedding gift for his friend, he promises to respond. Months later, wondering if Francine will fill the void in his life, he invites her to spend her Christmas break in Iowa City.

Before Francine can travel to Iowa to meet Jason in person, she must keep a promise. Serving a figgy pudding made using a centuries-old recipe to the girls who cannot return to their homes for the Christmas holiday has become a school tradition. Can she win Jason's heart by serving him the same Christmas dessert?

How can you not love a story featuring an old timey recipe around the holidays? Especially if it is written by Zina Abbott, who always weaves a tale that is close to the heart and makes you smile!

It is so exciting to read about history with the combination of fiction, and especially about travel and an event of a solar eclipse! What is fun is this was also a part of a previous book by Zina that I really enjoyed and it pulls it together!

Francine, a science and match teacher at a girls academy, receives a letter from a potential match and is encouraged he is a physical science instructor. She just needs to correspond with him more.

With a twist, Francine ends up meeting the man's friend who is a professor of science and astronomy! A match made in the heavens you say?

You will just to find out! But know this is one adventure you do not want to miss! I just wish I could travel back and time and experience how it was to live then. Lucky for us, we can almost do that by reading! Thanks Zina!

A good read with a lot of interesting information about the eclipse at the time and how it was studied. This book picks up at the end of Eli’s story where he passes his letter from Francine on to Jason and their story unfolds.

This was such an interesting book. I love the way the author brought details and factual accounts into this book. Both of the main characters in the book, Francine and Jason, taught and studied science. They had started corresponding after the total eclipse of 1878, when a friend of Jason's wanted him to write to her. After months of corresponding, they meet at Christmas, when Francine agrees to visit Jason. They find they have much in common and as their relationship deepens, they both question whether they are ready for the next step. I recommend this book to anyone that reads historical western romance. It's a great book that I really enjoyed. They're also several different recipes for Figgy Pudding.

A spinster Science teacher takes a chance on love, but the response to her letter is not from it's intended recipient. A widowed Science professor , a recipe for figgy pudding and a match made in heaven, will keep you entertained as you root for a happy ending for Francine and her professor.

A great story about two people who find each other and use their liking of science and astrology to aid in their conversation. A little emotional and some humor with children. Entertaining

This is a good American historical romance, with likable characters. It gets 3.5 stars from me, rounded up to 4 stars.

I thought it was just too short to have enough character development. I wanted more backstory on both Francine and Jason.

I liked both Francine and Jason, but he should have been more careful about some things he said to her. A couple of times, he said things that made her think he did not support suffragettes -- but he did support them, just wasn't very good at making conversation. He also reacted poorly when he saw her holding his friend's new baby, because he had never really let himself grieve for his son.

The premise of the series, with each story having a special recipe that the h makes, is a lot of fun. I plan to try some of them, since they sound delicious.

This is a clean romance, with nothing but kisses. If you only want to read romances that do not include sex scenes, this one might work for you.

    My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

The author has brought us an outstanding story that is a bit of a different take on a MOB story. This is Francine's story, and the character development is excellent. Francine is a woman before her time in that she knows who she is, what she wants to be, and how she hopes to accomplish it. As she goes about her mission of "becoming" she meets Jason Sewell, a professor of science and astronomy. Jason had lost his wife and small son and has no desire to remarry. The couple strike up a correspondence and then Jason invites Francine to visit him over Christmas. Francine accepts the invitation and decides to take her famous Figgy Pudding to share. Will Francine and Jason realize they have more in common than not? Will Jason be able to say a final goodbye to his dead wife and son. Will the Figgy Pudding be a hit? Will Francine find she can follow her dreams and still be a wife and possibly a mother? Be sure and read this great story that is full of scientific facts yet one that contains a very heartwarming story. I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.
