This book will help you realize why we say love is love. The book is a wonderfully written love story about two individuals who had very little in common, whether that was their education, their geographic coast differences, their economic backgrounds or their work experiences. What brought them together can be described as fate and the story that unfolds to the reader is nothing less than spectacular. Wonderfully crafted and written by the author, Kate Canterbary, this story is her first effort into M/M romance and my hope is that it won't be her last.
Owen Bartlett has been a conundrum to me since he was first introduced as the man who married Nick and Erin in The Spire (another book by Canterbary). He is the captain of a lobster boat, sailing the great Northeast seas and can be described by many as grumbly and cantankerous. Unlike his external image, however, Owen Barlett is a softy, and a king who is searching for his life partner. He dismissed the ideas and notions that he would ever find true love, dismissed his feelings and emotions and settled for a quiet existence in Talbott's Cove, where he relished the simple things life had to offer him. Until that fateful day when a sailboat entered his cove and disrupted his quiet life.
Cole McClish is the "it" guy in Silicon Valley. He has more money than he could ever need, but his life doesn't seem to be meaningful. His last few projects have not been successful and he was unceremoniously asked to go on vacation by his board of directors so they could replace him in role as CEO of his company. Dumbfounded by this act, Cole decided to take his boat and sail the seas. Cole's IQ might be off the charts, but his skills as a sailor are less than expected. So it is not a surprise that when the navigation systems broke down, he injured himself and ended up in a sleepy little town in Maine. His life was about to get a bit more disrupted by the likes of Owen Bartlett, and Cole could not have been more pleased with this disruption.
This book takes you through the same paces as other love stories, both characters demonstrating vulnerabilities and insecurities that are both relatable and authentic. The author does a fabulous job of connecting these two leads with the genuine banter and sarcasm we have come to expect from a Canterbary book, but she goes deeper by giving us two real people in Cole and Owen. When love finally does bloom for these two, the sparks fly (or maybe those are fireflies) and the reader is given a wonderful gift to behold.
Owen and Cole are such genuine characters that you almost don't remember the M/M love story unfolding in front of you. With Owen's gruffness and Cole's bumbling ways, you will fall deeply in love with both these men and their lives in Talbott's Cove. Book boyfriends have taken on a completely different meaning to me now ... and I am grateful to Ms. Canterbary for helping me explore this new genre. She certain can tell stories like no other author I have read and I cannot wait to see what comes next.

'Summer love was never meant for me. It wasn't mine to keep. I built sandcastle dreams and the tides washed them away every time.' There hasn’t been a book of Kate Canterbary’s that I haven’t adored. There hasn’t been a character written by her to whom I haven’t in some way—big or small—related. And there definitely hasn’t been anything quite like Fresh Catch. This book is different—not better, mind you—from what I’ve come to expect of Ms. Canterbary. And while, for some authors, that could spell trouble, here, it spells success. Or, at least, it should. Because this is one wonderful story. It’s not simply the fact that Fresh Catch is M/M romance, although that does, of course, set it apart. It’s also something else. There’s a sweeping kind of romance to this book that makes it impossible not to love. The pace is on-point (naturally) but it’s inherently slower, easier. Yes, there’s blistering banter and snappy dialogue, but for the most part, you’ll find this story ebbing and flowing like water around Cole and Owen; a liquid lightheartedness that makes this story feel good, crashing into a tension that leaves you wanting more. It helps that, when it comes to good, there’s Owen Bartlett. He has those delicious elements of growly, bitey-ness Ms. Canterbary has perfected over the years, but his soft center is softer, more apparent and, to be frank, so much sweeter. He’s equal parts grumpy bear and teddy bear and I just—like, seriously, I LOVE him. In fact, if you’ll pardon my language, I f-–ing love this book. It has depth—questions of worth and identity and need—but mostly, it has heart. Oodles of it. More than I can possibly convey in one (typically fangirl-y *eye roll*) review. So, I’ll leave it to Ms. Canterbary to sum up, because I can’t say it better than this: 'Boom. Just f-–ing boom went my heart.' ~ FIVE Little Prince STARS ~
