Fresh Catch (Talbott’s Cove) Kindle Edition
"You could smile at me, and I'd fall apart," he whispered. His fingers skimmed down my back, pressing and rubbing like a dream. "I think you know that."
Take a vacation, they said. Get away from Silicon Valley's back-stabbing and power-grabbing. Recharge the innovative batteries. Unwind, then come back stronger than ever.
Instead, I got lost at sea and fell in love with an anti-social lobsterman.
There's one small issue: Owen Bartlett doesn't know who I am. Who I really am.
~~
I don't like people.
I avoid small talk and socializing, and I kick my companions out of bed before the sun rises.
No strings, no promises, no problems.
Until Cole McClish's boat drifts into Talbott's Cove, and I bend all my rules for the sexy sailor.
I don't know Cole's story or what he's running from, but one thing is certain: I'm not letting him run away from me.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2018This book will help you realize why we say love is love. The book is a wonderfully written love story about two individuals who had very little in common, whether that was their education, their geographic coast differences, their economic backgrounds or their work experiences. What brought them together can be described as fate and the story that unfolds to the reader is nothing less than spectacular. Wonderfully crafted and written by the author, Kate Canterbary, this story is her first effort into M/M romance and my hope is that it won't be her last.
Owen Bartlett has been a conundrum to me since he was first introduced as the man who married Nick and Erin in The Spire (another book by Canterbary). He is the captain of a lobster boat, sailing the great Northeast seas and can be described by many as grumbly and cantankerous. Unlike his external image, however, Owen Barlett is a softy, and a king who is searching for his life partner. He dismissed the ideas and notions that he would ever find true love, dismissed his feelings and emotions and settled for a quiet existence in Talbott's Cove, where he relished the simple things life had to offer him. Until that fateful day when a sailboat entered his cove and disrupted his quiet life.
Cole McClish is the "it" guy in Silicon Valley. He has more money than he could ever need, but his life doesn't seem to be meaningful. His last few projects have not been successful and he was unceremoniously asked to go on vacation by his board of directors so they could replace him in role as CEO of his company. Dumbfounded by this act, Cole decided to take his boat and sail the seas. Cole's IQ might be off the charts, but his skills as a sailor are less than expected. So it is not a surprise that when the navigation systems broke down, he injured himself and ended up in a sleepy little town in Maine. His life was about to get a bit more disrupted by the likes of Owen Bartlett, and Cole could not have been more pleased with this disruption.
This book takes you through the same paces as other love stories, both characters demonstrating vulnerabilities and insecurities that are both relatable and authentic. The author does a fabulous job of connecting these two leads with the genuine banter and sarcasm we have come to expect from a Canterbary book, but she goes deeper by giving us two real people in Cole and Owen. When love finally does bloom for these two, the sparks fly (or maybe those are fireflies) and the reader is given a wonderful gift to behold.
Owen and Cole are such genuine characters that you almost don't remember the M/M love story unfolding in front of you. With Owen's gruffness and Cole's bumbling ways, you will fall deeply in love with both these men and their lives in Talbott's Cove. Book boyfriends have taken on a completely different meaning to me now ... and I am grateful to Ms. Canterbary for helping me explore this new genre. She certain can tell stories like no other author I have read and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2024Kate Canterbury never fails me.
This was the perfect quick, light, lovely little read in the midst of a slump.
Cole and Owen were both total tootsie-pops that brought out the absolute best in one another. They were so precious and I just had a grin on my face all through reading.
For such a quick read (I suppose it’s all relative, but just comparing to my normal 350-450 pagers) she did some great character development, and I never felt like we were moving too quickly. There was immediate attraction yes, but it wasn’t insta-love - I was never questioning why these two people loved one another or worked as a couple, which is important to me.
Excited for the rest of this series!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2020Fresh Catch--along with the rest of the Talbott's Cove series--was a sudden impulse purchase triggered by my disatisfaction with another romance entirely. I was plodding through a short yet endless cliche-fest when I suddenly thought, "Gee, doesn't Kate Canterbary have another series that I haven't read yet?" No sooner thought, than bought, and there I was, rescued from the toils of ennui.
It seems appropriate then, that the novel opens with a rescue at sea, one more hilarious than hair-raising. Cole McLish, disgraced tech wunderkind, finds himself techless and adrift on a sailboat off the coast of Maine. Fortunately he is boarded and towed to safe harbor by pirate/lobsterman Owen Bartlett before the sailboat can run aground. Cole decides that Owen's seaside home represents the sanctuary he didn't know he craved, and the two men strike a bargain--Owen's spare room for Cole's labor as a deckhand for the rest of the summer.
The story is told from dual points of view, and Cantherbary handles this style choice with her customary aplomb. It's an excellent way to underline the contrasts between the two men. Cole alternates between broody brat and world-weary pilgrim, brilliant but volatile. Owen, on the other hand, comes across as solid as the granite of those famously rock-bound coasts, embracing a solitary yet meaningful life. The dual POV serves to really focus on character growth and the gradual development of the relationship between the two men. I love the author's writing even when a given novel doesn't entirely work for me. In the case of Fresh Catch, it totally worked, and I found myself highlighting passages that moved me with their wisdom or tenderness or humor or sometimes just the beauty of the language. And I loved Cole and Owen.
The structure of the novel is pretty straightforward. Two very different men meet, become friends, and finally, driven by their mutual attraction, become intimate. Love scenes are steamy and explicit, but founded as much on emotion as on lust. While both men are comfortable with their sexuality, neither is fully confident in his ability to sustain a serious relationship, and most of the novel's tension stems from this uncertainty.
Ironically, the book I abandoned in order to read Fresh Catch was also a "small town romance." While Talbott's Cove is undeniably a small town, it completely lacks the incestuous nosiness of so many fictional small towns as well as the cutesiness so common to the trope. The central couple is the focal point here, not the wacky yet annoying inhabitants of the village. Peripheral characters are well drawn and realistic but not distracting . I found the settng a refreshing departure from stereotype, despite the author's admission that the equally fictional inhabitant's of Cabot's Cove served as inspiration.
Fresh Catch really hit the spot for me, a seemingly simple story transformed into tender romance by the power of beautiful writing. I'd recommend it to anyone needing a break from all the stress and complications of 2020. So, five enthusiastic stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2019This book in the series with Cole and Owen was much better than the other out so far with Annette and Jackson. I enjoyed these two guys together. Their physical descriptions didn’t come off very strong and didn’t leave much of an impression for imagination. I liked their differences and how it worked for them though. I did not like how Owen flipped out when he found out exactly how wealthy Cole was though. Cole offered to tell him everything and Owen said no it wasn’t necessary. But then he flipped out when he found out. Uhhhh frustrating.
It was cute in a way, but there just wasn’t anything too exciting or intriguing. The lobster boat stuff was unique.
Hopefully this series improves.

5.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't love this book more
Oh my heart is full💕
I love, love, love Owen and Cole's beautiful love story.
I'm about to be sickly sweet here so skip this sentence if you want cos it could hurt your teeth with how sweet it is. You know how certain songs or lyrics occur to you whilst reading? Well as Owen and Cole are tentatively edging towards each other, I couldn't help but hear 'Tale as old as time'. It might sound crazy but the lyric "Barely even friends,Then somebody bends, Unexpectedly". This sums up the entire book for me. This beautiful story is strongly romantic and sigh worthy. Don't be deceived by my effusive praise, it's also hot and steamy in parts. It packs a heavy emotional punch as well as some welcome light relief.
All in all, a triumphant, fantastic, fulfilling read. Swoon💕

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars
"Fresh Catch" is my first MM romance novel. I always thought I wouldn't be interested not because I'm a homophobe, just that I felt I should be able to identify with the characters to go through a love story. I decided to take the plunge because it was Kate Canterbary. I discovered this author last December, and since then, I'm in awe with her stories. She had never disappointed me, and this is another example.
I couldn't have been wronger when I thought I couldn't relate to a gay couple. Love is just the same between two people, no matter they are from the opposite sex or not.
I relished the building of their feelings toward each other, their fears, their emotions. I think Kate Canterbary's writing can make me like anything. I loved her Walsh series because it featured strong women in a city and smart male characters, but not the usual alpha-male of romance novels. As a European, I'm not usually into US small town stories that I don't know. Again, this author introduced me to this little Maine village without any problem, and I felt I was living there while I was reading.
As for every of her book, I wish I could meet these characters in real life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caught - hook, line and sinker
Like so many readers out there, I have an incredibly long TBR and a whole heap of one-click authors ... and I tell myself that I won’t add any more ... and I yet again I broke that promise ... but OMG I am so glad I did. Kate Canterbary is an author so many of my book buddies - and other authors I love - have raved about and I kept saying I would get around to reading her books. An opportunity came up to read her most recent release, Fresh Catch, and so I thought why not?!? And I’m so very very glad I did.
When I discovered this was an mm romance I was thrilled - since this is one of my all time favourite tropes. And the story of Silicon Valley billionaire Cole and lobster farmer Owen is nothing short of fabulous. Despite their differences, at the heart of this story is two guys who are desperate for love and yet neither feel deserving. Kate weaves a story that not only highlights some important social issues ...
"Eventually, there'd be a time when we led with curiosity rather than assumptions about sexual identity, race, faith, ability…all of it."
but also brings to life to absolutely gorgeous characters in Cole and Owen - two men who you feel like good friends by the time you are done with the story. Their quirks are loveable, their personalities authentic and the the love that blossoms is one that is such a joy to watch. Add to this a small town with characters you won’t to know more about (and thankfully we will get to know more about Annette and Jackson at the end of the month!!) and Fresh Catch is one story that I’m sure to read again. I also have to mention the chapter titles and definitions because these totally helped to make the story ... plus who knew so many boating terms could have such great innuendo.
Well it’s safe to say I’ve found myself another one click author - and I’m off to binge read ALL the books because I just cannot get enough of Kate Canterbary!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A simple and sweet romance
This was a cute quick read. I loved both Cole and Owen, there wasn’t too much angst and drama and the dreaded miscommunications common in this trope. The characters were fun, the smut well-written and the town setting was interesting. Can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet, fast-paced love story
Fresh Catch is a sweet and fast-paced romance story.
For me the story was a little bit too fast and there was a little bit too much "insta-love" for me. It was hot and sexy but I was just missing more scenes where you could feel Cole and Owen fall in love and get to know each other.
All in all though, I enjoyed reading Fresh Catch. It's a sweet and sexy love story.
