Dance With a Deverell Kindle Edition
2023 Special Edition Cover
He knew, the first time he saw her, that she was the only woman in the world for him.
She knew, the first time they met, that he was the last thing she needed in her life.
*
Even before she hears his name— before he’s even turned around to look at her— Lady Beaufort knows this young man is trouble. On a quest to collect a debt of five guineas, he has trampled her precious pineapple plant and broken into her house in the dead of night. Who knows what he might do next, given half a chance?
Like most of his notorious family, Ramses Deverell is not a man to let locks, walls, or society’s rules get in his way. He doesn’t care about the class divide either and believes that money, opportunity and respect should be earned. He knows what he wants and he’s determined to get it.
And when he meets Ainslie Beaufort, he’s still young enough to think he can change the world for both of them.
*
But while he sees no boundaries and sets no limits for himself, Ainslie has been raised in a life full of constraints. From her tightened corset laces to her censored conversation; from her concealed opinions to her confined emotions, she’s well-trained in what is expected of her. She knows her place in the world, and she knows the penalty for straying from it. Above all, she does what she must to protect her daughter, for her proudest achievement is motherhood, and what she doesn’t need is this wildly charming, infamously incorrigible male, endangering her reputation. As well as her pineapples.
Yes, he’s amusing, playful, handsome and clever, but he’s too young for her, too reckless and too tempting. And even worse than all that, he’s a Deverell. Need anything more be said?
No, she will never kiss him, whatever premonition he claims to feel in his bones. Nor will she ever dance with him.
They should never have met; it would be better for both of them, if they never meet again.
For her daughter’s respectability, this lady will sacrifice her own desires.
But to dance with the woman he loves, this Deverell will walk through fire.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2022The story begins at the end. Our hero, Ramses Deverell, a Commander and hero in the British Navy, is being persuaded to attend the Cholmondeley ball by his very good friend, Brandon Beaufort. Ram, as he is often fittingly called, being a stubborn and determined kind of guy, does not want to go. There are some lovely descriptions here of Ramses' dream about a magical ball where he sees, just before he is rudely awakened, his purpose for being there.
Meanwhile, our heroine, Ainslie, the Dowager Countess of Beaufort is helping her eighteen-year-old daughter dress for that same ball, although Ainslie, herself, is not going.
The story then goes back seventeen years to show Ramses and Ainslie meeting. He instantly feels "in his bones" that she is the love of his life, and she, being seven years older, thinks he is a boy who will change his mind many times. Over the course of thirteen years, they meet. And thus begins a lovely romance that Fresina, with her skillful flashbacks, leads up to the Cholmondeley Ball and what happens then.
It's great.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2022In this book, Jayne Fresina follows another of the unique Deverells, Commander Ramses Deverell, and his long pursuit of Ainslie, Dowager Countess of Beaufort and step-mother of his best friend.
I enjoyed the young Ramses, who was unconventional, humorous and cheeky. He describes himself this way: "This fine figure of a man you see before you is just the mighty shell, hiding within the most delicious nut."
Ainslie, on the other hand, is described as a woman who "preferred to keep her tears tucked away, like a frayed edge turned and sewn over to keep it neat."
Ramses, a naval officer, is burned badly while saving children from a burning ship. He becomes introverted and despairs of ever winning Ainslie.
Meanwhile, Ainslie is freed from her brutal husband upon his death, which causes a collective sigh of relief from all who knew him--including readers--but there are still many difficulties on the way to the HEA.
I was engrossed in the story and desperate to reach the happy ending. However, these days the real world is such a cause for despair that I need more hope and happiness and less despair. The usual steadfastness of the H and great good humor are diminished in this book.
Still, reading Fresina's marvelous prose makes the book captivating. It is like a rich, tasty cake without icing--still delicious, but lacking the coating of good cheer.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2022I really love Jayne Fresina and her stories that involve all the different Deverells. I really liked Ramses and Ainslie's story too. I read a lot of romances and Jayne's stories that include that family are some of the best. I like her writing style, I like her stories, I like the feelings she invokes, I pretty much like everything about her books! This one was very enjoyable.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2022What happens when you mix the caged bird with a man so full of himself he could be a balloon? A love affair spanning 13 years. Another reviewer used the word "compelling" and I think that's an apt description. The characters are not the least bit flat, and if your heart doesn't ache for Ainslie...well, I don't know what to say to you. I thoroughly enjoyed this read, and will be picking up more from this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2022🤔 Not sure what I want to write about this book but it seems to be a bit of departure from her other works. While likable the main characters lacked the spirit and vitality that I have come to expect from a Fresina hero and heroine. These two were rather tragic. I read this book because for me Fresina is an automatic read. Now I will be a bit more cautious. I am not a fan of an abused heroine troupe and for this heroine it took too long for her to get a backbone.
Update ( a day later)
After thinking more about my above initial review I changed my star count to four instead of three. Simply because this is a well crafted story. More realistic to the times than Ms Fresina's other books. In this tale, Ms Fresina evokes emotions that are not always comfortable. And there was no humor to make the circumstances of the hero or heroine more palatable. The trials and the tribulations to the HEA were a bit much. Quin (a reviewer ) describes the hero and heroine as compelling. I agree, one really wants these two to get through the minutia of 13 long years of life in the late 19th century to their HEA. And they do. the ending was quick, the epilogue made up for it. But not enough to compensate for the other 90% of the book. I had to read a Barbara Metzger as a chaser. I wish the heroine had a little of vitality of Gemma Grout. Now that is a heroine!!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 2, 2022I love the Deverell stories, and this one is no exception. I could hardly put it down. Both Ramses and Ainslie are compelling characters, and we read about them through several encounters over the years. There were lots of surprises involved, and I know this story will stick with me in the way that the previous books have.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2022This is a wonderfully sweet and romantic novel. My interest in reading as waning in recent weeks ( reading has always been my mainstay ) but this novel has revived it. This author is a talented writer : each book is unique and enjoyable. I highly recommend this author and this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A roller coaster of emotions
Jayne Is a gifted writer — I love her style and her ability to play with the readers heartstrings. Where to begin with Dance with a Deverell. Painfully sobering, beautiful plot and believable characters that crackled on the paper. I went through a roller coaster of emotions reading the story. Fabulous ending if not a little short but Jayne had me willing the conclusion, impatient, and on the edge of my seat. Once again a great story within the Deverell theme. Up there with Raven and now my new go to book to read again. Thank you Jayne

4.0 out of 5 stars Satisfying HEA but timeline a little confusing
3.5 stars for this fairly short but sweet romance about a grandson of True Deverell (from the lovely Deverells series). Commander Ramses Deverell of Her Majesty's Royal Navy is a son of Justify Deverell. As a young man, Ramses falls for an older, (unhappily) married woman. There is about seven years between them. I didn't mind this aspect of the story and the age gap wasn't an issue for me.
Ainslie's unhappy marriage of convenience to her horrible, much older husband felt uncomfortably believable. But although attracted to the young Ramses, she does not step outside her marriage, and the relationship never really happens till years later, after her husband's death.
I did get a bit frustrated and at times a little confused by the frequent time jumps in the story. There were lots of flashbacks showing how Ainslie and Ramses' slow-burn relationship gradually grew over the years. It was good to know how it all happened, but sometimes I felt I didn't know what year events were occurring in, and I would have preferred fewer time jumps in the book.
There was a lovely ending and epilogue. I enjoyed seeing the growth in both characters, particularly Ainslie's blossoming once she escaped the confines and strictures of her horrible husband, and found a man who really loved her for herself. Can easily be read as a standalone.
