From These Ashes (Haven Hart Book 4) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,184 ratings

A product of his past, Black spends half his time saving lives and the other half taking them. Every day, a hard choice must be made and he’s the man to make it. Long ago, he vowed to never love again; one-night stands with a willing body was all he ever needed. But along came Quill, and Black’s life is irrevocably changed. He never expects something as simple as Quill’s persistence to alter the way he not only sees the world, but how he lives it.

Quill has bad taste in men and equally horrible luck. Growing up wasn’t easy, surviving is even harder. When his past and present collide, he’s convinced he’ll finally witness his own destruction. But when an unlikely antihero steps in to protect him, his life is turned on its head. He’s spent months flirting with the man of his dreams and hoping he’d take notice. But it turns out, being on Black’s radar isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, and his idea of protection varies greatly from Quill’s.

Unknowingly sharing the same goal—burying their own pasts deeper than the fires of hell can reach—they’re both unaware that jumping into that fire will do more than ignite their feelings, it could lead to their own demise. Will Black and Quill be consumed by the flames, or from these ashes, will they find their own happily ever after?

This is the fourth book in the Haven Hart series and one that I've been hoping and waiting for ever since I first learned about Black. Then, when Quinn was added to the mix I wanted it even more!

I love these characters so much, Black has been this mysterious boss-man that takes care of other peoples dirty business as well as running a security company. He loves his city, has a dark past and doesn't want to have a real relationship with anyone. He seems to have a limitless supply of power and money and enjoys the things and people that station brings. He's VERY dominant and controlling and that is something that brings a bit of contention to his and Quill's budding relationship. He tried as hard to avoid Quill as Quill did to pursue Black but in the end they couldn't fight the pull towards each other.

Quill, is my absolutely favorite type of character. The type that is broken but puts on a good front, he's much stronger than he looks and he hasn't completely given up hope that there is a place and person for him to call home. He's one of those "Looks can be deceiving" people but he's a genuinely good guy.

Quill has been running most of his life. From family and more recently an ex (there are scenes and portrayals of domestic violence). The stakes of bringing his stalker ex to justice has higher stakes than anyone could guess. I liked the way Quill took charge of his own destiny even when people tried to stop him every chance they could.

The slow build into their relationship was perfect and their feelings genuine and realistic. These two needed to learn each other and share things that they never had before in order for them to see each other clearly.

This book is action packed ,filled with drama and angst. Once I started I literally couldn't put it down until I finished!

I adore Quill and I’m glad Black stopped fighting what he wanted and allowed himself to live and be loved. I’m glad I lead a normal, law abiding life but if I didn’t, I’d sure rather have Black as a friend than as an enemy

Quill Ahmeida and Terrence Black: If you would have told me that I would love either one by the time I got to this part of the Haven Hart series I would have told, you you were crazy, Quill's advances toward obviously disinterested Black often clumsy and sometimes downright cringe-worthy and Black the notorious assassin just far too much hot air for me, but here I am, a fan.

Yes, that's right I said it, I am now a fan of both and as usual, I blame Davidson King. Once again she has sucked me in, making this book the best yet, as we are introduced to the two men in stripped down versions of themselves, Quill's outrageous personality explained as a defense mechanism in a lot of ways as his past is slowly brought to light and Black's past brought to the forefront as well, giving the reader an explanation as to not only why he is the way he is, but also offering a wide eyed look as to not only how, but why Black started his organization to begin with.

It's hard to explain the beauty and the complexity of the book itself without giving too much away, but I'll leave you with this: From the Ashes not only allows the reader a glimpse into the personalities of these two complex men, but it takes you on a ride as we see Black and wonder two things: What forces a person to surrender to love? And how far would they go to protect it once they do?

I can’t tell any potential reader enough of this intense and perfectly imperfect story of Quill and Black. From the ashes rise the phoenix and two broken people can really heal each other, tighter.

    Black and Quill

I was wondering who would be able to catch the attention of Black. I love that it was Quill. This has been a really great series so far.

Quill flirts outrageously with Black every time they meet. He doesn’t expect anything to come of it because he believes he just isn’t good enough for Black to want.

Black has his finger on the pulse of his town. Taking care of what he see’s as the bad guys. Knowing that he is one of them. When Quill is endangered by his boyfriend, Black steps in to protect him. Setting events in motion that bring the men together and into danger.

This is the fourth book in the Haven Hart series and it didn’t have the impact the others did. I liked Black and Quill together, I just didn’t love them. There were several questions that weren’t answered and at this point the Hart heir’s identity just doesn’t seem that important. I’ll still give it 4 stars because there was enough of the other personalities from the first three books to keep it interesting.

What can I say about a character whose been one of my favourites ever since his introduction? Black, a man who is intriguing, has secrets, but at the same time does not try to hide what he's about, which is protecting the lives of those who deserve it, and disposing of those who don't. And then we have Quill, a man who'd been intrigued by Black from the start, and who, little by little, breaks down Black's walls. Together, these two make a formidable pair, and though Quill has suffered at the hands of others, his strength was what I loved most about him (coming close was his flirty nature when it came to Black).

It was great to read characters from previous books also (sigh....Snow and Christopher and sigh...need to read more of Poe please!! :D ) I can't wait to delve into the Haven Hart world again.

    Great addition to the series!

Wow yet another fantastic addition to The Haven Hart series. From these Ashes had everything going for it.All the emotions are pouring out of this story. The very sassy Quill who used his sass to cover up his heartbreaking past and his self doubt about himself. Then there is Black who is commanding in every way and he tries to stay that way while protecting his employee Quill. Does Quill break down Blacks defense's? You so need to read this to find out. I recommend reading the whole of The Hart Series. I cannot wait to see what Davidson King comes up with next. Absolutely awesome!!!!!!!!!!

    Time to Bet on Black
Quill is the cute, young and annoying barista who's been flirting hard with Black for ages.
He gets closer than he thought when he sees Mace with a dead body behind the coffee shop.
Instead of screaming, he offers rubbish bags.
He's now thrust into a delivery boy job for Black.
    But someone is threatening him
A powerful ex and a family member.
When he ends up in the hospital Black rushes there and sets out to catch whoever it is - what he catches, is feelings.
This one was great, especially as it's set at Christmas and it's Grumpy/Sunshine with a very elf like Quill turning Black's place into a Christmas explosion.
    Loved it.

    I loved this one.

From what we’ve seen of Black in previous books , I was looking forward to his story. I already that Quill was gonna be the one but still was really happy to confirm it.

Black has a heartbreaking past and it’s really emotional when he tells his story.
Quill just never had someone stand by him, not even family. When his father died his life just went downhill. It was so heartbreaking to know what he went through all his life and all the trauma he has because of it.

I throughly enjoyed seeing Black avenged him, like no one deserved to died more than them.
I though Black was going to be the type of character where at some point you struggle to love him specially after seeing him “failing” Bill and Mace previously ( I didn’t like him much then ) but no, he’s lovable from the start.

I loved them together and I love seeing an almost 50 year old man finding love again with a man in his twenties. Absolute perfection!

The sexy times was also 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

    Audiobook:

This is my second time reading this and I loved it again. Great narration as always!

Black has a sad story while Quill is a tortured soul. They rose from the ashes together and it was beautiful to see them come to life.

    Diving onto the next one.

I read on reviewers that didn’t like this story as they found Quill to immature and I know everyone sees things differently, but I found I enjoyed this story more so because Quill was 22 yrs old and he acted like a 22 yr old but he also had a maturity about him that made him perfect for the much older Black. I would of liked to see the ending a bit different mainly one person brought to justice. It was great to see Teddy and Riordan in this book and all the other characters we are beginning to love. Really cannot stress how good it is to read a series that is not from a template and is not filled with useless fillers to make it longer.
