Editorial Reviews

Review

"A vibrant, dramatic and disturbing novel packed with religious fervour, magic realism, and horror. DeBlassie brings both the natural and supernatural elements of the desert of New Mexico alive in the mind of the reader. Passionate and inspired, Goddess of Everything makes a notable contribution to the Visionary Fiction stable."
-
Isobel Blackthorn, Ph.D., author of The Unlikely Occultist: A biographical novel of Alice A. Bailey

"Paul DeBlassie III uses his in-depth understanding of human emotions and their healing in
Goddess of Everything. He takes aim at two institutions held up as unassailable in Western culture--motherhood and organized religion. We see the dark underbelly of both. The mother who wants to control, possess, and consume the life she's produced. The church that hides sexual and spiritual abuse under the skirts of its priests and nuns. In a novel rich with Latinx mythology and a deep understanding of psychic gifts, DeBlassie plots a course for us to escape such abuse and heal. Even thrive."~ Theresa Crater, Ph.D., author of the Power Places and Mystic Assassin series.

"
Goddess of Everything is a psychologically thrilling novel that centers around a mother and son with twisted events and happenings you don't see coming. DeBlassie delves deep into the psyche of mind and religion in this novel, with a lot of spirituality mixed in as well. Full of incredible imagery and well-written words, this is a book you won't want to miss." ~ Rachel Moss (in house IBBB reader)

"Intriguing and unique,
Goddess of Everything is a story about a boy growing up with a mother who is both spiritual and evil . . . satisfying ending . . . well done! ~ International Review of Books

"Paul DeBlassie III has done it again with this new addition to his books. It was fascinating to take another trip into the world of Aztlan, where your mind is brought into a mix of
gothic horror and spiritual powers." ~ Sheri Schrader, MA Art History (in house IBBB Reader)

"DeBlassie masterfully sends chills up the spine with this piece, leaving the reader feeling like a small child being led by the hand through a nightmare. This book
haunted me long after I'd put it down--cannot recommend it enough." ~ Dani Dando (in house IBBB reader)

"Filled with dust devils and real devils, disconcerting sacrifices, secret rituals, psychic energies and otherworldly instruments,
Goddess of Everything is a twisted tale that will haunt your nightmares." ~ Steve Quade, Indies Today

Fantastically Evil
“I am with you and will appear in many ways, in many forms during your life.” These words are spoken to Little Gabriél at his father’s funeral, by his father. With his father gone, Gabriél now fully belongs to his mother, a very possessive, intimidating, and domineering figure. It only makes sense that young Gabriél is frightened of her, and she uses that fear to solidify his role as obedient son. She does not like that Gabriél has the sight, and even seems a bit afraid of his gift. Her friends tell her he must be broken early before he becomes dangerous. Years later, Gabriél has become a social worker and is every bit the devoted son…until he marries. He tries to balance married life and being the son his mother desires, until children begin to disappear from the orphanage his mother runs, children he has placed there, and Gabriél must face the truth of who he has been devoted to all these years. This book is so well-written. The characters are fantastically defined with the menace of evil clearly felt throughout the story. A mix of the Countess Báthory, famed serial killer who bathed in the blood of her victims, and Evil Nun, Gabriél’s mother, Juana, is a villain of epic proportions. Power is her only desire, and it matters not who stands in her way. An amazing tale!

That was…something. I just - I don’t have the words. As usual, I’ll find them, and probably a ton of them but believe me this book is just something.

So let’s start here: if you’re gonna be all offended by the religious perversion in this book just move on. The cover tells you enough of what you’re getting into. You know whether or not you can handle it and/or your offense level. Don’t take it out on the book.

Now, in actual book review news:

This book is a whole lotta wtf did I just read levels of nonsense. There’s plenty of eye rolling for some characters, others are plenty creepy. I can surely tell you while I assumed I knew where the story was going, I did not see how it got there coming so that’s good! The religious undertones are there and as someone who grew up Catholic it honestly freaked me out. Hence my little warning up there - I knew people that would be highly offended by this book, and there’s no reason for that.

This started super slow. I wasn’t sure it was ever going to pick up but once it did it was very quick! I’m not sure when it really started picking up but I do know those last few chapters just flew by - I had to know how it ended!

Anyway - I recommend this to horror lovers, but those that aren’t going to be offended by the religious content and the way it is portrayed.

Goddess of Everything reminded me of Martin Cruz Smith's Nightwing, a novel I consider his best work, and conjured images of two of the most frightening books I've ever read: The Exorcist and Book of Revelations. This atmospheric tale prodded the darkest region of my brain, a secret place I usually keep double-padlocked. If you like beautifully written psychological horror, grab this book.

✨ Goddess of Everything by Paul DeBlassie III✨

🖤This book gave me the same feeling that "tiptoe through the tulips," gave me when I first watched Insidious!

♥️An unapologetically scary love battle between a mother, her son and his wife. Dripping with Catholic + Mexican rituals and fallacy, it paints such a dark and haunting picture that is very obviously well researched

🖤Gabriél is a psychiatric healer who has always been connected to the spiritual world, just like his mother.

♥️But Gabriél's mother is evil, practicing blood sacrifices within her orphanage along with abuse and murder of the children.

🖤When Gabriél's wife Consuela tries to bring light to the truth of Mother Juana, she is attacked and her son, kidnapped.

♥️A battle of good vs evil leaves Gabriél scrambling to use his gifts to save his family and finally put an end to the abuse and evil.

Pick up this psychological thriller today!

Okay, to be fair, this is definitely too graphic for me. With that being said, what I did read was intricate and fascinating. The writing feels like an old storyteller rambling with eerie music in the background. It is definitely spooky and disturbing. Explicit depictions of child abuse so beware!! But the supernatural elements are completely original. Absolutely insane amount of detail and dread in the lore of this story. Definitely must be read during the day with the lights on!!

Whoa! What a great thrilling read! Mother Juana de la Cruz is pure evil under the guise of religion and so is her entire nunnery. Using her son in ways that are unbelievable and often unreal. Poor Gabriel and his wife Consuela and their son who suffer from her nasty needs. I am stunned at how evil the religions of the world can be but, covered up by the “good” that they do and the money that is generated. I must say that Consuela is my favorite character as she sticks by her husband through all the evil and trickery that takes place and to find out that she is the hero in the end is the best reward for reading the book. Mothers are not the be all and end all in a little boy’s world! It is truly their wives that are looking out for their husband’s best interest. Always listen to that inner voice also known as intuition or a gut feeling- it usually does have something important and truthful to speak.
This book is full of twists and turns and kept me on the edge of my seat during the entire read. I found this book to be a real psychological thriller in such as way as to question religion and the truth of its motives. Great character development with many colorful characters and lots of mind-bending atrocities. I appreciate the Native lore of the book and the setting description that makes me feel the hot arid desert and the sand whipping and stinging my face. Such a great book to read but be prepared for the ride of your life.
