About the author

After spending years creating stories in her head, Alex started writing them down and then found she couldn’t stop. Despite the late start, she now writes m/m romance about found families, sometimes with an historical feel—and the occasional werewolf.
Free from aspirations of literary greatness, Alex simply hopes to spin a good yarn of love and life, wrapped up with a happy ending. And if her characters have to go through Hell to get there, she’s a-okay with that.
Alex writes and walks on the South Coast of England—even when her heart and spellcheck are in New York.
You can now find her dark m/m romance under Alexis Jane, if you like love…but darker.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2017I loved this story. Having read the synopsis I wasn't sure so downloaded a sample first. I ended up reading the whole book in a day. The main character, John, is a flawed individual with issues. Much of the psychology of this is explained later in the book and really helped turn around my initial negative view of him. The story itself is a good mystery but it was the interaction between John and Jason that kept me absorbed throughout the book. The writing is good and is supported by good editing (no obvious spelling and grammar issues). There is good depth to the main and some secondary characters and if this is the first part of a series then there is room for these secondary characters to grow. I like that this was advertised as book 1 but ended up being a complete story. I look forward to the next book in the series. Highly recommended read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2017This one comes from a relatively fresh direction...we begin with an anti-hero.
John is an ex-police officer. He's always had a little problem...with 'watching' guys who intrigue him. He doesn't have to know anything about them, prefers distance and imagination...but he watches and imagines a lot.
And there is an intriguing young man, beautiful and very very 'watchable'....and he bikes by John's boring security job like clockwork. A nameless unknown, he still becomes a big part of John's very empty life, until the unknown vanishes.
John can't handle it when the only interesting thing in his life disappears and his ex-police side pounces on the mystery (and his obsessive creeper side happily goes along). John tracks down who the unknown is and what happened to him....and then talks himself into helping him, knowing him...loving him.
Creepy, right? Well...in an mm romance kind of way.
John's stalking behavior dehumanizes his victim and reflects an obsession that would almost certainly go over the edge, but events make the 'unknown' guy human and real, and John can no longer hide in fantasies. We are given reasons for John's very bad habits, and we get a crew of helpful and interesting secondary characters...maybe a few too many for the smoothest of stories, but works fine. There are some nasty bad guys, and our 'unknown' is pretty much in need of a rescue and safe haven. I always appreciate additional mystery or adventure with my romance. Most of the story is from John's third person point of view, we get his thoughts and feelings. Here and there for brief moments the story switches to the other mc point of view.
Smooth dialogue, professional writing, a few words missing/extra. Some points in the mystery a little weak (I thought a couple times the characters had learned something new, but then I find they still didn't know; one contradiction). But this was an off-kilter mm romance wrapped in a mystery, and I liked it. Twisted to start...we creep closely with John.
Recommend
Some things I consider in an mm romance
Sexy scale 1-5=3
I didn't count, but there are about three explicit mm sex scenes.
Humor scale 1-5:3
There were several chuckles in this story, mostly from mental comments John makes to himself.
Angst scale 1-5=2
John has his childhood history and his history on the job twisting him; our "unknown" guy is in very bad shape once found. But these stories are told third hand or after the fact with relatively limited emotional kick. John's stalking behavior does not seem casual, it seems like a serious problem over which he has no control despite wrestling with it and hating it...until the real world interrupts his pattern of behavior. The 'unknown' guy's reaction to being romanced by someone who stalked him was, I thought, not downplayed or glossed over, which I appreciated. Check bottom of review for possible triggers.
Likable MCs1-5:3
Why do I like John? I wasn't sure I would, and his life is so empty to start, except for his stalker hobby. He is a distant creeper to start. But we are informed as to his thinking quite a bit and I found that his creepy stalker qualities faded out as his life actually becomes more livable. We will see, since it is a series. The author doesn't counterbalance John's flaws with an equally off-kilter love interest...as our 'unknown' guy is nice, cute, and not much else? There is a hint that maybe the guy likes to be 'watched' once he gets used to the idea...maybe a hint that he has nightmares from other events besides the current mayhem? Overall, since I liked John I was glad he had a 'good' guy....but I don't feel like we've learned too much about that good guy, yet.
I hope the series focuses on new mysteries and the main couple. Not so interested in following around and pairing up secondary characters, although some are mysterious and quirky. But I am very curious how the next one will start..the beginning of this one was unusual and engaging and skeebed me out a little, and the switch from anti-hero to hero added some interesting flair. Could be difficult to keep up the intriguing nature of this volume.
You like the sound of Gazes into You?
Then here are some other recommendations of other MM books:
You like a dark creepy dysfunctional happy ending mm relationship?
Well, it doesn't get more dysfunctional than Stockholm Syndrome series by Richard Rider (available at Lulu online). Fascinating, vicious and romantic. Not lighthearted: domestic violence, crime, kinks, mental health issues, murder; most of it up close and personal; three volumes to get one couple to their HEA. This is a complete bizarrely intriguing romance, not just a wild collection of craziness. Why do I like this couple so much? IDK
Want less creep in your cop/ex cop mystery romance? Then I recommend
Kaje Harper's Life Lessons
Rhys Ford's Dirty Laundry
I also recommend other Alex Jane books, the Alphas Homestead Series, although they are very different from Gazes into You. They follow a paranormal homestead mm romance theme.
Possible triggers
Stalker in detail, including his thinking and justifications and general skankiness with his obsession, and I think could bother someone who has been stalked; Torture described after the fact.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2017Okay, the "nature" of our main character was a little off-putting. People have referred to him as a stalker, I guess that is correct although I would find him more on the lower end of the scale (not too scary). As we get to know him, and learn about his motivations, your heart really starts to go out to him. I do worry though, will "this" stop - or will he always be compelled to watch other people. His watching always had this sort of protective nature to it, but still...it was a little odd. And the one-way mirror was super weird, but hey...if it works for their relationship I am all for it (two consenting adults can do whatever they want together).
The mystery was thrilling, it wasn't too hard to figure out who the bad guys were but the thrill was figuring out how they would get their justice. The romance was sweet, a little angst was thrown their way and it was totally believable how they worked through. It wasn't this immediate "oh shucks, I forgive you" - both characters fought to find their way back to each other and I appreciate that.
I can not wait until the next story in this series, and thrilled to find that the cliffhanger was not frustrating at all - this was a totally complete story with a great ending. They find their HEA, and they find a really great future together that opens the doors for other mysteries. Yay...glad this won't be the last time we hear from John and Jason.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2017This book is FUN. It's a detective story set in Manhattan in homage to Dashiell Hammett. . . with gay characters that would have been invisible in the Sam Spade era. There is some gay sex, but it didn't obscure the principal arc of the story. It has all the usual characters from the 1930's: a conflicted former detective who was excellent when he was a cop but who was sent to the dugout with an injury; a good cop who looks to the former cop for help and who gives the former cop the support of true friendship; the love interest who is young, charming, and anything but a wimp; evil-doers and nasties aplenty; and even a femme fatale! What more could a Sam Spade-loving reader want? If this has romantic elements, they're secondary to the mystery, and any romance is, believe me, bruising rather than balletic. I will read the second book in this series. In fact, I can't wait!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nobody's Perfect
Gaze into the Abyss & the Abyss gazes back into you. The subtext of the story is 'Nobody's perfect' and how true !!! The book cover spiel mentioned the main character John being a voyeur and a stalker and his filming of strangers did initially put me off reading this book, but so glad I persevered as this book became a really good read. Johns character develops as the story progresses and you begin to realise he is a very complex man who had a very difficult and dysfunctional childhood, with horrific experiences that have made him into the very complicated and also slightly unloveable man he is today. His loyalty to his long suffering friends is without doubt ( and also theirs to him ) although this has been hard earned on both sides. This loyalty and his personality flaws are the centre of this book combined with a very good plot and a difficult developing relationship between the main characters, which leads to a gem of a read. Alex Jane should be very pleased with herself with this book and I am so looking forward to the release of the 2nd book in this series and to see how the characters move on..

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
This was a good read, took me a while to get into it but once I did I was hooked. The story development took hold and that was it, I really enjoyed the relationship between all of the characters too

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pairing.
I won't comment on the slightly weird start to this book,as others have already done so.What I will say is what a great cast of characters Ms.Jane has once again given us,and the way the 2 MC's relationship developed was realistic and well defined.Great book and looking forward to next in series.

This story kept me enthralled from the first chapter. Well rounded characters, plenty of mystery and romance. Can't wait for the next book.
