This three-book offering contains the first three novels in the Detective George EIms (Langthorne Police Series).
In the first book, “Missing,” Elms deals with a hostage negotiator gone wrong, placed in an untenable situation by a vile criminal. Elms does his darndest to keep everyone safe and bring the situation to a successful conclusion.
In book 2, “Then She Ran,” a young woman with a baby is forced on the run by the poor choices of her boyfriend. Her pursuers “are indiscriminate and deadly”, taking out random strangers on the street, to keep her from telling what she doesn’t know she knows.
In book 3, “Her Last Breath,” the jaded Elms comes up against a serial killer who scares even him. Politics forces Elms into taking actions he finds morally repulsive and which he knows will only end badly. Very. Badly.
This book is an excellent introduction to the Elms series. Each story gives a sense of Gallagher’s ability as a writer, and slowly introduces Elms, a flawed but brilliant detective who isn’t afraid to step on toes.
Gallagher is a sitting police officer in England, and his varied law enforcement background is reflected in his stories – the dark, gritty, disturbing cases, the interoffice politics, the stressors on officers’ families and private lives. His stories seem very real to me, and the characters are (except for the bad guys) people I’d want to hang out with.
Each of these novels kept me on the edge of my seat with heart-pounding non-stop action. I normally don’t binge read, but Gallagher hooked me on Elms from the get go, and I had to know what happened to Elms, his work family, and his family family. The stories are realistically gruesome, which can be hard to swallow, but the relationships between Elms, his team, and his superiors are also strikingly realistic, so balanced out the bad parts for me.
Gallagher also writes the Maddie Ives Series, which is equally dark, gritty, disturbing, and ultimately satisfying as the Elms series. I highly recommend anything by Gallagher.

An exciting three books which must be read.

I have a problem recommending it because of some of the content
